SUMMARY:Sikka Art and Design Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 12th edition of Sikka runs from 23 February to 3 March 2024 at the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood (it’s moved from Al Fahidi to simplify access and increase the range and number of exhibits and event spaces – all part of sprucing up the festival and making it generally more Official). There’s a lot going on – lots of murals and outdoor installations\, lots of art and photography exhibitions\, live performances\, film screenings\, poetry evenings\, workshops\, “homegrown F&B concepts”\, and a programme of panel talks by our friends at Karama Arts Club. \nBut if you’d like to find out exactly what’s happening when and where\, don’t bother with the website at sikkartandesign.com – it seems to be inactive. There’s no Twitter/X or Facebook presence with the promised @sikkaplatform account. And Sikka’s Instagram is enthusiastic and busy but skimpy in terms of hard information. \nThat leaves the Dubai Culture page for the Sikka festival. It looks good but in fact it’s full of lorem ipsums and placeholder images\, which is frankly a bit shoddy. If you persevere with clicks on ‘Your Guide to Sikka 24’ you will get to a page from where you might think you can download the full programme … but no. You can in fact download a PDF for day one but the other links are all dead or barely sentient (try the ‘Sikka Houses’ page\, but prepare to be disappointed quite quickly). Don’t bother clicking on ‘Download the full programme here’\, or ‘Register’\, or ‘Download your Sikka map here’; they don’t go anywhere. (And the map lower down the page shows the old Al Fahidi location by default\, but at least you can drag it over to Al Shindagha.) \nSeveral events are capacity-limited\, though\, so registration will definitely be required for those. Since preregistration doesn’t seem to be available\, perhaps there’s an onsite facility for personal visitors. \nThe lack of information and the duff website are really disappointing. Sikka has always had a cool\, open-access\, let’s-do-it-here vibe\, and even if that’s being organised away the festival is bound to be a fun visit. Still\, it would be better if we knew some more about the timed events or those that do need prebooking. \nThe festival is free to enter. It’s open from 4pm and closes at midnight on weekends\, 11pm weekdays. Access is best via Metro (the Al Ghubaiba stop) or cab (book online with code SIKKA50 to get your Hala Taxi trip at half price).

DESCRIPTION:The always enjoyable Alserkal Art Week\, a taster for Art Dubai that has become established in the own right\, runs this time from 25 February to 3 March. All the Alserkal Avenue galleries seem to be committed\, along with guest exhibits at pop-ups and design houses; there should be more than two dozen exhibitions on show. \nHighlights include Can You Hear Me?\, a major show in Concrete by the pioneering video artist Nalini Malani – more about that here. SUMMARY:Xposure International Photography Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The eighth and biggest edition of what is arguably the world’s largest in-person photography festival (20\,000+ visitors last year) runs 28 February to 5 March in Expo Centre Sharjah. \nMore than 400 photographers from over 50 nations will be showing work\, and with more than 90 solo and group exhibitions it’s expected there will be over 2\,500 prints on display. Xposure also has more than 65 workshops and masterclasses\, 45 talks and panel sessions\, a programme of upskilling and portfolio reviews\, and a trade show with 20 manufacturers and retailers (most with special deals on offer). \nThere will also be the prizegiving for the annual Xposure Photography Awards\, the main ones coming on the evenings of 3 and 4 March. \nWhether you’re a seasoned professional or an amateur with a passion for photography\, Xposure almost certainly has something for you; and there’s more of a focus this year on art prints\, so collectors are covered too. SUMMARY:Katya Muromtseva: Over the Slopes of Speech
DESCRIPTION:The New-York based artist gets her first show in the UAE\, featuring works she created in Dubai during her time at the NIKA Project Space Research and Residency programme – monumental watercolour triptychs that relate to the narratives and histories of women immigrants. Muromtseva is known for her socially engaged practice and large-scale paintings\, videos\, and installations that refer to personal and collective memory; these works are based on interactions the artist had with immigrants\, both in the USA and during a month-long visit to the UAE as part of the residency. DESCRIPTION:Four young siblings find themselves abandoned in a house in the woods in Belgian writer-director Michèle Jacob’s creepily atmospheric suspense thriller. For much of its running time\, The Lost Children has the ominous atmosphere of a slow-burn horror film; “the forest doesn’t want us to leave and the house is haunted” as one of the children says.  Things aren’t quite as clear-cut as this implies\, though\, one review descries the film as having a David Lynch vibe. But it’s engaging\, is occasionally illuminated by flashes of dark wit\, does eventually come to a conclusion\, and doesn’t take too long to reach it … \nThis film in a short Francophone season (with English subtitles) at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi – shows in the Sorbonne’s rather nice outdoor garden. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The rich melodic culture of Egyptian music from Dina El Wedidi is set alongside the harmonically sophisticated sounds of American jazz mixed with RnB and post-rock by Samora Pinderhughes. It’s an intimate\, cross-boundary double bill\, the first of two this weekend that\, as The Arts Center’s Executive Artistic Director Bill Bragin put it\, “continues The Arts Center’s tradition of highlighting visionary artists whose work defies easy categorisation”. \nEl Wedidi last performed at The Arts Center in its inaugural 2015-2016 season as part of the Nile Project. Her innovative approach has earned her a significant reputation on the regional and global stage; her music is influenced by Egyptian folk music and Arab poetry\, resonating with the beauty of cultural diversity. The show features a selection of songs from her previous albums and new singles\, presenting her as both a singer and music composer and showcasing different chapters in her remarkable career. \nSamora Pinderhughes is a pianist\, vocalist\, and composer who commits himself to making art in his everyday life. Through honest lyrics and harmonic language\, his work delves into the things society tries to hide – its history\, its structures\, the individual\, and the daily things we all experience but don’t know how to talk about. With a musical style that cuts across multiple genres\, his performance is an invitation for the audience to express themselves and their inner thoughts by feeling things deeply and focusing on how we all live. \nThere will be a night souk as well\, with 40 retail vendors offering locally made artisan products\, including handmade soaps\, candles\, local artwork\, jewellery\, home décor\, and pottery. And if you want to take the second concert in this weekend series as well\, there’s a two-day pass available at AED 155. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Boogie Box has scheduled another of its superlative back-to-the-best-of-yesterday nights – yep\, a six-hour warehouse rave in an actual warehouse. It’s another of the Box’s leftfield venue finds\, this one The Hangar at JA The Resort\, which is actually an industrial space used as a workshop for boats (there’s a mini marina by the hotel). So the high ceiling\, unglitzy finishing and rough edges should help deliver the full warehouse rave experience. \nExpect a premium sound system\, enhanced lighting and visuals\, art installations and decor inspired by the 90s. Headliners are Anthea\, “one of the most charismatic selectors on and off the decks”; and the prolific German house/techno producer (and magpie favourite) Isolée. Also on the wheels of steel / Ableton-and-Macbooks are Kyle Bower and hometown hero Nasrawi. \nTake glowsticks and expect to bop till past 3am. We’re citing the basic door price on the night but there are bargains for early bird purchases and premium deals for extras. \n  \n
