SUMMARY:Sikka Art and Design Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 12th edition of Sikka runs from 23 February to 3 March 2024 at the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood (it’s moved from Al Fahidi to simplify access and increase the range and number of exhibits and event spaces – all part of sprucing up the festival and making it generally more Official). There’s a lot going on – lots of murals and outdoor installations\, lots of art and photography exhibitions\, live performances\, film screenings\, poetry evenings\, workshops\, “homegrown F&B concepts”\, and a programme of panel talks by our friends at Karama Arts Club. \nBut if you’d like to find out exactly what’s happening when and where\, don’t bother with the website at sikkartandesign.com – it seems to be inactive. There’s no Twitter/X or Facebook presence with the promised @sikkaplatform account. And Sikka’s Instagram is enthusiastic and busy but skimpy in terms of hard information. \nThat leaves the Dubai Culture page for the Sikka festival. It looks good but in fact it’s full of lorem ipsums and placeholder images\, which is frankly a bit shoddy. If you persevere with clicks on ‘Your Guide to Sikka 24’ you will get to a page from where you might think you can download the full programme … but no. You can in fact download a PDF for day one but the other links are all dead or barely sentient (try the ‘Sikka Houses’ page\, but prepare to be disappointed quite quickly). Don’t bother clicking on ‘Download the full programme here’\, or ‘Register’\, or ‘Download your Sikka map here’; they don’t go anywhere. (And the map lower down the page shows the old Al Fahidi location by default\, but at least you can drag it over to Al Shindagha.) \nSeveral events are capacity-limited\, though\, so registration will definitely be required for those. Since preregistration doesn’t seem to be available\, perhaps there’s an onsite facility for personal visitors. \nThe lack of information and the duff website are really disappointing. Sikka has always had a cool\, open-access\, let’s-do-it-here vibe\, and even if that’s being organised away the festival is bound to be a fun visit. Still\, it would be better if we knew some more about the timed events or those that do need prebooking. \nThe festival is free to enter. It’s open from 4pm and closes at midnight on weekends\, 11pm weekdays. Access is best via Metro (the Al Ghubaiba stop) or cab (book online with code SIKKA50 to get your Hala Taxi trip at half price).

DESCRIPTION:The always enjoyable Alserkal Art Week\, a taster for Art Dubai that has become established in the own right\, runs this time from 25 February to 3 March. All the Alserkal Avenue galleries seem to be committed\, along with guest exhibits at pop-ups and design houses; there should be more than two dozen exhibitions on show. \nHighlights include Can You Hear Me?\, a major show in Concrete by the pioneering video artist Nalini Malani – more about that here. Alserkal Arts Foundation’s public art projects return with This is Not Your Grave\, a new commission by Dima Srouji. DESCRIPTION:Trevor Noah’s current world tour called in at Dubai last October\, and now another UAE date has been added. Noted for his sharp wit and intelligent commentary on people\, politics\, racism and nationalism\, and occasionally himself\, he’s also good at the downright silly stuff too; the Guardian summarised his last UK show with “Noah is a master of classic standup and has mass appeal in the best possible way”. Recommended.

SUMMARY:Pieter Obels and Hermann Nitsch: Momentous Convergence
DESCRIPTION:You wouldn’t normally put these two artists together; but the gallery describes this show as “a platform that showcases a compelling dialogue between their distinct artistic visions”\, one that “celebrates abstract and profound concepts while highlighting the intriguing harmony between the artists despite their distinct stylistic approaches”. \nPieter Obels (b.1968) transforms steel into sculptures that defy its inherent rigidity\, creating light\, graceful pieces with organic shapes. Here he presents a collection inspired by the beauty of Dubai. “When you look at my sculptures you start to follow the lines; ‘Where do I begin and where do I go.’ It’s like travelling\, finding new roads\, walking unknown paths. For me\, showing my sculptures in Dubai feels the same. A new place to explore and meet. It’s a great adventure that starts in my studio and brings me new unknown encounters. I follow.” \nThe art of Hermann Nitsch (1938-2022)\, rooted in Expressionism and religious symbolism\, aims to be more intense and provocative. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of 23 works by the Italian art director/publisher of high fashion magazines. They’re highly graphic in style\, with bold lines and strong colours\, and as the title implies they consider women through the hair\, the only precise detail in a face without features. Says the artist: “These are not portraits. They are memories of emotions  … At my age\, I take pleasure in seeing life full of hope. The faces that come to mind I see as flowers in a garden or in the fields. All beautiful\, all different. They don’t have features but colours. DESCRIPTION:Toni Morrison’s novels have reshaped American literature\, exploring themes of identity\, the human experience\, and cultural understanding with remarkable depth. The Africa Institute is inaugurating its Toni Morrison Senior Fellowship in African Diaspora Literature and Cultural Studies with a two-day symposium celebrating her life and legacy through film screenings and discussions. \nThe Fellowship is aimed at supporting established scholars and independent thinkers who have made significant contributions to African and African Diaspora literature and cultural studies. The first recipient is Philathia Bolton\, Associate Professor of English at the University of Akron\, Ohio.\, and she’ll be participating in the discussions. \nThe full programme is here. It includes two feature-length films: The Foreigner’s Home (dir Rian Brown and Geoff Pingree\, 2018) shows on 28 February and explores Toni Morrison’s artistic and intellectual vision through her 2006 exhibition at the Louvre to illuminate her insights on race\, identity\, and the transformative power of art. Day two has Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (dir Timothy Greenfield-Sanders\, 2019)\, an intimate exploration of Morrison’s life and work that features interviews with figures like Hilton Als\, Angela Davis\, and Oprah Winfrey. Screenings are followed by panel discussions. \n

SUMMARY:Xposure International Photography Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The eighth and biggest edition of what is arguably the world’s largest in-person photography festival (20\,000+ visitors last year) runs 28 February to 5 March in Expo Centre Sharjah. \nMore than 400 photographers from over 50 nations will be showing work\, and with more than 90 solo and group exhibitions it’s expected there will be over 2\,500 prints on display. Xposure also has more than 65 workshops and masterclasses\, 45 talks and panel sessions\, a programme of upskilling and portfolio reviews\, and a trade show with 20 manufacturers and retailers (most with special deals on offer). \nThere will also be the prizegiving for the annual Xposure Photography Awards\, the main ones coming on the evenings of 3 and 4 March. \nWhether you’re a seasoned professional or an amateur with a passion for photography\, Xposure almost certainly has something for you; and there’s more of a focus this year on art prints\, so collectors are covered too. DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its policy of attracting established blue-chip touring performances\, Dubai Opera is running Broadway Entertainment Group’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical for a three-week run. \nThe story is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of a musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of the young soprano Christine\, the Phantom grooms her as his protégé – but that doesn’t go too well\, and his obsession sets the scene for a dramatic collision of jealousy\, madness and passion. \nThe show\, which celebrated 37 years last October\, has won over 70 major theatre awards – it’s Lloyd-Webber’s most successful – and reportedly has been seen by more than 160 million people worldwide; now it’s our turn … There are performances between 22 February and 10 March (not Mondays)\, with shows at 8pm on weekdays and 2pm and 8pm on Saturdays\, 2pm and 7.30pm on the Sundays. Tickets look a tad pricey\, but this is a lavish production with a big cast and a 2h45m run time that could well justify the cost. \n  \n  \n  \n
