SUMMARY:Xposure International Photography Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:The ninth edition of the region’s largest\, broadest and generally most impressive festival of photography. It is based around a the exhibitions\, solo and group\, but importantly incudes a very full programme of authoritative talks and useful workshops; portfolio reviews and focus group sessions; film screenings\, guided tours\, and book signings; an accompanying trade show; the Xposure Awards; the Xposure Market Area\, selling festival merchandise\, prints\, and accessories; and\, new for this year\, the Conservation Summit – “a dedicated platform for addressing critical environmental issues through the lens of visual storytelling” that brings together conservationists\, photographers\, and filmmakers to discuss and promote sustainability and environmental awareness. \nFor this year\, Xposure moves to the Aljada development near the airport and the universities. This would seem to be a much cooler\, more dynamic and creatively inspiring destination\, much more open and less form than the Expo Centre (and it helps that Ajjada’s developer ARADA is the festival’s official partner: “ARADA’s visionary development provides an elevated experience\, setting the stage for a transformative celebration of photography and the visual arts”\, says the press bumf). \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sikka Art and Design Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 12th edition of Sikka runs from 23 February to 3 March 2024 at the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood (it’s moved from Al Fahidi to simplify access and increase the range and number of exhibits and event spaces – all part of sprucing up the festival and making it generally more Official). There’s a lot going on – lots of murals and outdoor installations\, lots of art and photography exhibitions\, live performances\, film screenings\, poetry evenings\, workshops\, “homegrown F&B concepts”\, and a programme of panel talks by our friends at Karama Arts Club. \nBut if you’d like to find out exactly what’s happening when and where\, don’t bother with the website at sikkartandesign.com – it seems to be inactive. There’s no Twitter/X or Facebook presence with the promised @sikkaplatform account. And Sikka’s Instagram is enthusiastic and busy but skimpy in terms of hard information. \nThat leaves the Dubai Culture page for the Sikka festival. It looks good but in fact it’s full of lorem ipsums and placeholder images\, which is frankly a bit shoddy. If you persevere with clicks on ‘Your Guide to Sikka 24’ you will get to a page from where you might think you can download the full programme … but no. You can in fact download a PDF for day one but the other links are all dead or barely sentient (try the ‘Sikka Houses’ page\, but prepare to be disappointed quite quickly). Don’t bother clicking on ‘Download the full programme here’\, or ‘Register’\, or ‘Download your Sikka map here’; they don’t go anywhere. (And the map lower down the page shows the old Al Fahidi location by default\, but at least you can drag it over to Al Shindagha.) \nSeveral events are capacity-limited\, though\, so registration will definitely be required for those. Since preregistration doesn’t seem to be available\, perhaps there’s an onsite facility for personal visitors. \nThe lack of information and the duff website are really disappointing. Sikka has always had a cool\, open-access\, let’s-do-it-here vibe\, and even if that’s being organised away the festival is bound to be a fun visit. Still\, it would be better if we knew some more about the timed events or those that do need prebooking. \nThe festival is free to enter. It’s open from 4pm and closes at midnight on weekends\, 11pm weekdays. Access is best via Metro (the Al Ghubaiba stop) or cab (book online with code SIKKA50 to get your Hala Taxi trip at half price).

SUMMARY:Alserkal Art Week
DESCRIPTION:The always enjoyable Alserkal Art Week\, a taster for Art Dubai that has become established in the own right\, runs this time from 25 February to 3 March. All the Alserkal Avenue galleries seem to be committed\, along with guest exhibits at pop-ups and design houses; there should be more than two dozen exhibitions on show. \nHighlights include Can You Hear Me?\, a major show in Concrete by the pioneering video artist Nalini Malani – more about that here. Alserkal Arts Foundation’s public art projects return with This is Not Your Grave\, a new commission by Dima Srouji. There’s a Majlis Talks programme on 27 February; and that will be followed by Alserkal Lates\, with most of the Avenue’s galleries\, stores and F&B outlets staying open till 10pm. \nExhibitions already open: \n\nCarbon 12 André Butzer Becoming Matisse\nCustot Gallery Landon Metz Being Infinite\nFiretti Contemporary Laura Lappi Metamorphosis\nGulf Photo Plus Maen Hammad Landing\nIshara Art Foundation Sheher\, Prakriti\, Devi group show\nIwan Maktabi Noor Al Suwaidi The Eye of the Beholder\nLawrie Shabibi Mandy El-Sayegh A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose\nLeila Heller Gallery Aref Montazeri Immortal Mirror\nLeila Heller Gallery Carpets of Eden\, Gardens of Fantasy\nLeila Heller Gallery Dale Chihuly solo show\nTashkeel Ji-Hye Kim Summits of Solitude: Narratives in Nature\nVolte Art Projects Rashid Rana It Lies Beyond\nZawyeh Art Gallery Posters for Gaza group show\n\nExhibitions opening on 27 February for Alserkal Lates: \n\n1×1 Art Gallery Graciela Magnoni Watan\n1×1 Art Gallery Owais Husai For Every Horizon That You Leave Behind\nAyyam Gallery Faisal Samra Immortal Moment\, Coping with the Shock\n\nCustot Gallery Kenia Almaraz Murillo Invitation to a Mystical Dreamland\nElmarsa Gallery Rachid Koraichi An Ode to Intertwined Histories\nFiretti Contemporary The Fifth Wife group exhibition\nGallery Isabelle Mohammed Kazem and Vikram Divecha Rest\nGreen Art Gallery Ana Mazzei How to disappear\nGrey Noise Iqra Tanveer Lament of a Tree\nMestaria Gallery Charmaine Chanakira Taking L’s\nThe Third Line Farah Al Qasimi Toy World\nVolte Art Projects Manjit Bawa I Was Born a Poet\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Laura Lappi: Metamorphosis
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the MENA region for the Finnish artist. Her work draws inspiration from ancient basilicas\, cathedrals\, and other Scandinavian wooden structures. Using wood as her primary medium\, Lappi establishes a direct connection to her homeland and the natural world through sculptures that evoke architectural qualities. \nTransformation is central to Lappi’s practice; the wall sculptures from her Basilica series show wood transitioning from a living organism to a shaped\, discarded\, reused\, cut\, and organised material. Layering wood to form intricate geometric patterns\, she employs a charring technique using fire; the material  undergoes a profound metamorphosis\, assuming an in-between state\, half-dead and half-alive\, resistant to preservation. \nThe exhibition also introduces a collection of drawings that offer a glimpse into her creative process and inner thoughts. These drawings serve as a bridge between the conceptual realm on paper and the tangible manifestation of transformation in her art\, providing an illuminating perspective on her artistic journey. \nTo 26 April. \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Love Letter to Beirut
DESCRIPTION:Sotheby’s has an upcoming London auction devoted to artists from or inspired by Lebanon’s capital\, and Dubai is getting a preview in the form of a selection of the works that will be in the sale. The full complement includes work from nearly 50 artists; around 30 of them are actually Lebanese\, the others are from Iraq\, Egypt\, Syria and Palestine. We don’tknow exactly how many or who will be shown at Sotheby’s Dubai\, but we’re told the highlights of the auction include paintings\, watercolours\, mixed-media and sculptures by the likes of Etel Adnan\, Huguette Caland\, Ayman Baalbaki\, Mona Saudi\, Aref El Rayess and Saloua Raouda Choucair. \nFollow the abbreviated Dubai show (26 February to 1 March) the exhibition moves to New Bond Street from 19-22 April in advance of the sale on 23 April. \nAlso on exhibition at the same are a couple of pieces from Sotheby’s bi-annual Modern & Contemporary Middle East auction (London\, 23 April)\, notably two rare paintings by Bahman Mohasses from 1964. \nRight: Mahmoud Saïd\, Maisons à Aïtanit (1951). SUMMARY:Germany Year Zero: dir Roberto Rossellini (1948)
DESCRIPTION:Amid the ruins of war-torn Berlin immediately after the Second World War\, 12-year-old Edmund struggles to support his ailing father; he gets caught up in black market schemes and falls to a Nazi-sympathising former teacher – with tragic consequences. The concluding part of Rossellini’s celebrated War Trilogy\, this daring and heart-rending portrait of a decimated post-war European city remains one of the most affecting films in the history of cinema. Recommended.

SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its policy of attracting established blue-chip touring performances\, Dubai Opera is running Broadway Entertainment Group’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical for a three-week run. \nThe story is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of a musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of the young soprano Christine\, the Phantom grooms her as his protégé – but that doesn’t go too well\, and his obsession sets the scene for a dramatic collision of jealousy\, madness and passion. \nThe show\, which celebrated 37 years last October\, has won over 70 major theatre awards – it’s Lloyd-Webber’s most successful – and reportedly has been seen by more than 160 million people worldwide; now it’s our turn … There are performances between 22 February and 10 March (not Mondays)\, with shows at 8pm on weekdays and 2pm and 8pm on Saturdays\, 2pm and 7.30pm on the Sundays. Tickets look a tad pricey\, but this is a lavish production with a big cast and a 2h45m run time that could well justify the cost. \n  \n  \n  \n
