SUMMARY:Judit Böröcz\, Bence György Pálinkás and Máté Szigeti: Singing Youth
DESCRIPTION:The original Singing Youth is a larger-than-life memorial statue of three young people by Greek sculptor Memos Makris\, a political refugee in Hungary. In 1953\, the statue was installed in front of a sports stadium in Budapest; it still stands there today\, having survived the collapse of communism and later the demolition of the stadium and the construction of a replacement. \nIn this a cappella performance\, also titled Singing Youth\, a theatre maker\, visual artist and composer team up to bring the sculpture to life. Composed of excerpts from newspaper articles\, interviews and statements made by politicians over the years\, the lyrics present the sculpture as a witness to political upheaval\, current affairs and the use of arts and sports for political ends. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n

SUMMARY:Xposure International Photography Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:The ninth edition of the region’s largest\, broadest and generally most impressive festival of photography. It is based around a the exhibitions\, solo and group\, but importantly incudes a very full programme of authoritative talks and useful workshops; portfolio reviews and focus group sessions; film screenings\, guided tours\, and book signings; an accompanying trade show; the Xposure Awards; the Xposure Market Area\, selling festival merchandise\, prints\, and accessories; and\, new for this year\, the Conservation Summit – “a dedicated platform for addressing critical environmental issues through the lens of visual storytelling” that brings together conservationists\, photographers\, and filmmakers to discuss and promote sustainability and environmental awareness. \nFor this year\, Xposure moves to the Aljada development near the airport and the universities. This would seem to be a much cooler\, more dynamic and creatively inspiring destination\, much more open and less form than the Expo Centre (and it helps that Ajjada’s developer ARADA is the festival’s official partner: “ARADA’s visionary development provides an elevated experience\, setting the stage for a transformative celebration of photography and the visual arts”\, says the press bumf). \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Le Dîner de Cons
DESCRIPTION:The first of three more performances of the culture Emulsion production of Francis Veber’s highly successful modern French farce. Pierre Brochant is one of the Parisian businessmen who have a weekly ‘idiots’ dinner’\, where guests bring along a dimwit who can be ridiculed. Brochant finds an excellent candidate in François Pignon\, but things start to go wrong when the businessman finds Pignon is a gaffe-prone walking disaster … Of course it’s in French. \nThere are further performances on 22 and 23 February. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
