SUMMARY:Hatshepsut: The Woman Who Would Be King
DESCRIPTION:Actually\, she was king (sort of). This “groundbreaking immersive show” covers the life of Hatshepsut (c. 1507–1458 BCE)\, the fifth Pharaoh of Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty – ruling first as regent to her stepson Thutmose III\, then as queen regnant. She dressed and behaved much like a man in order to keep the court and the priests on side (hence presumably the reference to ‘king’). Famously her reign was a period of great prosperity and peace\, and of major building (like the Karnak Temple Complex and her own Mortuary Temple at Deir el-Bahari). After her death most of her images were destroyed and references to her erased; ain’t that always the way? \nSo there should be lots of material for this show\, which features 270-degree wall and floor projections and the promise that “you’ll be transported to the heart of the empire\, experiencing the customs\, beliefs\, and traditions that shaped Hatshepsut’s rule … in a captivating and unforgettable experience”. \nThe show lasts about 30 minutes and there are slots throughout the day between 10am and 8.30pm from 15 January to 18 February. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The multi award winning musical is making its Middle Eastern debut for an extended run at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena (to 11 February). Lin-Manuel Miranda’s book\, music and lyrics have created something of a revolutionary moment in theatre – it’s a musical that has genuinely had a profound impact on culture\, politics and education. It’s probably one of those opportunities that should grab if you can\, if only to check out whether the hype is justified … \nHamilton is a sung-and-rapped-through biography of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution; Miranda has described Hamilton as about “America then\, as told by America now”. \nWeekday performances are at 8pm (not Mondays) with prices from AED 180; weekends carry a price premium (seats from AED 240!) with two performances a day on most Saturdays and Sundays. We’re promised “a captivating journey of self-discovery and awe-inspiring aerial feats” via “a groundbreaking circus spectacle blending acrobatics\, 3D projection\, and visual wonders”. \nIt all happens in a purpose-built big top circus tent with 1\,200 seats. SUMMARY:Judit Böröcz\, Bence György Pálinkás and Máté Szigeti: Singing Youth
DESCRIPTION:The original Singing Youth is a larger-than-life memorial statue of three young people by Greek sculptor Memos Makris\, a political refugee in Hungary. In 1953\, the statue was installed in front of a sports stadium in Budapest; it still stands there today\, having survived the collapse of communism and later the demolition of the stadium and the construction of a replacement. \nIn this a cappella performance\, also titled Singing Youth\, a theatre maker\, visual artist and composer team up to bring the sculpture to life. Composed of excerpts from newspaper articles\, interviews and statements made by politicians over the years\, the lyrics present the sculpture as a witness to political upheaval\, current affairs and the use of arts and sports for political ends. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n

SUMMARY:Sharjah Light Festival
DESCRIPTION:Regular readers will know that magpie has always been a fan of the Sharjah Light Festival\, the 13th edition of which runs 7 to 18 February. SLF is being joined by two more light festivals that have emerged in the UAE over the last few months – Manar Abu Dhabi\, which runs to the end of the month\, and Dhai Dubai Light Art Festival at Expo City Dubai from 26 January to 4 February. \nThey both look like becoming exceptional additions to the calendar\, but they are very different constructions to SLF. Their artworks in the Dubai and Abu Dhabi installations stand alone\, even when they are site-specific. By contrast\, the Sharjah Light Festival generally takes a more conventional approach – the kind of thing we’re familiar with from some of the European city light festivals\, which typically means illuminating iconic cultural (and some natural) landmarks. \nThis year’s Sharjah Light Festival features light shows crafted by around 15 international artists in a dozen locations – three of them new to the schedule this year: Kalba Waterfront\, the General Directorate of Sharjah Police\, and the General Souq at Al Hamriyah. They join Khalid Lagoon\, Al Majaz Waterfront\, BEEAH Group Headquarters\, Al Dhaid Fort\, Sharjah Mosque\, Sheikh Rashid Al Qasimi Mosque\, Al Noor Mosque\, and Al Rafisah Dam. \nThere’s also the Light Village in front of the University City Hall building\, which will have around 55 F&B and retail vendors plus entertainment and activities. That opens from 1 February. \n

DESCRIPTION:Borrowing its title from Khulood Al Mualla’s fourth book of poetry Rubbama Huna\, Perhaps Here explores the orbits of contemporary imagination through a variety of live performances. This event will feature artists from diverse disciplines who will share their works with the public\, inviting audiences to experience something that could either be intellectual\, emotional or aesthetic in nature. \nOver three days\, 16 theatre makers\, contemporary dancers\, and installation and video artists as well as poets and writers will be performing their works simultaneously on repeat throughout the evening in a marathon of artistic productions. Audience members can select between four and six short shows\, each 10-20 minutes long\, to attend on the night; there are performances on 9\, 10 and 11 February at 8.30pm each evening. \nIn conjunction with the performances\, Perform Sharjah will offer a wide range of learning opportunities in theatre and performance through workshops and talks led by participating artists with local partners and cultural practitioners. \nThis is the last event in the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. SUMMARY:Hana El-Sagini: Counting Fingers
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition that presents a newly commissioned large-scale installation rooted in the instability and fragility of the human experience — more than 200 fantastical ceramic objects arranged as surreal sculptures and structures that replicate and reimagine healthcare spaces\, such as medical waiting rooms\, hospital corridors\, and doctors’ offices. These spaces\, typically perceived as sterile and stoic domains\, are transformed into dreamlike sites that are bizarre\, eerie\, and amusing. \nProduced after Hana El-Sagini’s long battle with illness\, the objects featured in this exhibition encourage viewers to find joy and humour in envisioning a strange world where humans\, animals\, plants and inanimate objects blend into semi-distinguishable forms and figures. The exhibition prompts us to pause and contemplate the inherent mechanisms that enable us to endure pain\, trauma\, fear\, and adversity in ways that may potentially reconnect us with our vulnerability and\, ultimately\, our humanity. \nEl-Sagini is a participant in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program\, organized in partnership with The Institute for Emerging Art. \nTo 28 April. \n

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents projects by 12 of the participants in 421’s Homebound Residency Program\, which ran annually from spring 2020 to fall 2023; it is both a celebration of the work produced during the programme and an acknowledgement of the importance of community in artistic practice. \nThroughout the programme\, artists\, curators\, researchers\, and cultural workers came together digitally during the pandemic to support each other and to provide for generative conversations\, critique\, and creative experimentation. The title ‘network culture’ is also a nod to the historical phenomena we are witnessing today – an increasingly interconnected world that is shaped and influenced by the digital. \nThe works featured are by Yara Asmar\, Mona Ayyash\, BaRiya (above)\, Raghvi Bhatia\, Kimia Collective (Chahine Fellahi and Kaïs Aïouch)\, Nihaal Faizal\, Batool Desouky and Zain Mahjoub\, Engy Mohsen\, Roger Mokbel\, Fatma Belkıs and Onur Gökmen\, Mahshid Rafiei\, Ayesha Singh\, and Salem Al Suwaidi. \nThe exhibition also acts as a departure point for future artists who will be part of a new residency programme which will take place in winter 2024 at our new artist studios here in Abu Dhabi. \nTo 28 April. \n  \n
