SUMMARY:Hatshepsut: The Woman Who Would Be King
DESCRIPTION:Actually\, she was king (sort of). This “groundbreaking immersive show” covers the life of Hatshepsut (c. 1507–1458 BCE)\, the fifth Pharaoh of Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty – ruling first as regent to her stepson Thutmose III\, then as queen regnant. She dressed and behaved much like a man in order to keep the court and the priests on side (hence presumably the reference to ‘king’). Famously her reign was a period of great prosperity and peace\, and of major building (like the Karnak Temple Complex and her own Mortuary Temple at Deir el-Bahari). After her death most of her images were destroyed and references to her erased; ain’t that always the way? \nSo there should be lots of material for this show\, which features 270-degree wall and floor projections and the promise that “you’ll be transported to the heart of the empire\, experiencing the customs\, beliefs\, and traditions that shaped Hatshepsut’s rule … in a captivating and unforgettable experience”. \nThe show lasts about 30 minutes and there are slots throughout the day between 10am and 8.30pm from 15 January to 18 February. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The UAE’s biggest and best literary event is back\, with the usual cornucopia of writers\, creators and thought leaders – a total of around 160 events at Festival City from 31 January to 6 February. \nThe line-up includes the 2023 Booker Prize-winner Paul Lynch; a past Booker winner and current President of the Royal Society of Literature\, Bernardine Evaristo; BookTok sensation Curtis Sittenfeld; shoe and accessories designer and author of Oh My Gosh\, I Love Your Shoes! Sophia Webster; gender equality and arts advocate Eliza Reid\, the First Lady of Iceland; Emirati artist and cultural envoy\, Fatma Lootah; and the Egyptian graphic novelist and illustrator Deena Mohamed. \nThe Festival will be hosting a series of book launches including Out of This World by Dr Sultan Al Neyadi\, a photo journal of the recently appointed Minister of Youth’s six-month visit to the International Space Station \nThis year there’s an evening programme under the title LitFest After Hours\, running Thursday to Sunday with “a feast of performances\, games\, activities\, and food”. There’s also Discovery Talks\, a series of free-to-attend lectures on topics ranging from the Spiderverse and AI to Chinese mythology. And there’s a special focus of children at LitFest Families\,  “an action-packed weekend perfect for tiny bookworms”; and for older students there’s Youth Day\, “a day of specially curated events for curious minds … all with an anchoring focus on Arabic culture”. \nThe full programme is here\, including prices\, and it’s worth downloading the Festival Grid to check for clashes among your preferences. SUMMARY:Judit Böröcz\, Bence György Pálinkás and Máté Szigeti: Singing Youth
DESCRIPTION:The original Singing Youth is a larger-than-life memorial statue of three young people by Greek sculptor Memos Makris\, a political refugee in Hungary. In 1953\, the statue was installed in front of a sports stadium in Budapest; it still stands there today\, having survived the collapse of communism and later the demolition of the stadium and the construction of a replacement. \nIn this a cappella performance\, also titled Singing Youth\, a theatre maker\, visual artist and composer team up to bring the sculpture to life. Composed of excerpts from newspaper articles\, interviews and statements made by politicians over the years\, the lyrics present the sculpture as a witness to political upheaval\, current affairs and the use of arts and sports for political ends. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n
