SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its tenth edition on 22 to 28 October with an official selection of 81 films from 37 countries (slightly down on last year\, which saw 90+ from 47 countries). But “the new edition promises to exceed audience expectations” said Sheikha Jawaher Bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, SIFF’s director\, in her press statement; certainly there will be three world premieres and no fewer than 53 Middle East premieres. \nThere are screenings in seven categories\, all competitive – Student Films\, GCC Short Films\, International Shorts\, Animations\, Animated Features\, and Feature Films. There’s also a Green Carpet platform which will offer audiences the chance to see films (four of them) with a director’s Q&A; there are also eight talks and ‘open discussions’. \nWe can’t currently tell you much more than that; the website does list what films are being shown and when\, but otherwise it’s largely bereft of useful information and clearly has some very outdated pages (including the director’s message\, which still refers to the online-only Festival of 2021). Apparently ticket prices are the normal charges for Vox films and you can book them online via the Vox website as usual; the main location is Vox City Centre Al Zahia but we understand Mirdif City Centre and City Centre Ajman will have the screenings as well. \nRight: still from Titina\, dir Kajsa Naess (Norway/Belgium\, 2022)

SUMMARY:RAUXA CIA: The Crisis of Imagination
DESCRIPTION:RAUXA CIA\, a performance duo from Spain\, combines modern circus art and theatre in this story of two adults suddenly regaining their childhood imagination – “for a fleeting moment they find themselves in a world where anything is possible\,” says the blurb. “It’s only when this magical world disappears they realise that the delicate boundary between reality and imagination is defined solely by one’s perspective.” \nWe’re promised a one-hour show that is “touching\, absurd\, and profoundly sincere … Its multi-layered storytelling resonates with universal themes of kids’ imagination\, wordless storytelling\, simplicity\, and humour that transcend language barriers”. It’s inventive\, funny\, and clever.r\, wordless circus-like performance with a balloon and stepladder. \nThere are three more shows on 28 October.

SUMMARY:200 Meters: dir Amin Nayfeh (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Mustafa and his wife Salwa live 200 metres apart in villages separated by the Israeli wall. One day he gets a call every parent dreads: his son has had an accident. Rushing to cross the checkpoint\, Mustafa is denied entry on a technicality. A 200m distance becomes a 200km odyssey as Mustafa tries to get to his son … \nThis screens in 421’s four-day Palestinian Cinema Days\, a programme presented in collaboration with Reel Palestine and Cinema Akil that champions independent and alternative cinema for the stories\, heritage\, and identity of the Palestinian people. \nScreenings take place in 421’s outdoor plaza from 7pm on; films include subtitles in English and Arabic where applicable. \nAll proceeds go to Emirates Red Crescent’s Tarahum – for Gaza campaign. Admission is free with preregistration via the website and a receipt for a donation via Emirates Red Crescent’s payment link (the recommended donation is AED 50). \nIn-kind donations can also be dropped off at 421 throughout the film days from 10am to 9pm. Check this link for the sort of things that are needed. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Global Notes: Linus Roth & Boris Kusnezow
DESCRIPTION:This is the gala opening performance for the Global Notes Series from Dubai Opera in collaboration with Encore Performing Arts. Global Notes is a new recital/concert programme “dedicated to celebrating the vibrant tapestry of cultural diversity and supporting young musicians from around the world”; we think in essence this means an opportunity to hear some excellent musicians in a relatively intimate setting\, though the phrase “gala opening” suggests it won’t be exactly informal … The ticket price includes a drink\, incidentally. \nLinus Roth\, who plays the 1703 Dancla Stradivarius on loan from Landesbank Baden-Württemberg\, is noted for his stylistic knowledge (as well as his performances as a soloist and chamber musician he is also an academic teacher of music and has been artistic director of music festivals) and his charismatic personality. For Linus’s Dubai debut we’re promised a programme of pieces from Brahms to Bartók that highlight his virtuosity and dynamic musicality. \nAccompanying him is one of the most sought-after collaborative pianists of his generation.\, Boris Kusnezow.
