SUMMARY:Nine Nodes of Non-Being
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition with works by nine artists\, thinkers\, filmmakers\, and researchers from East\, South\, Southeast Asia\, the MENA region\, and South America. Curated by Ritika Biswas\, it conceives of climate-related extinction through various states of negation and excess emerging from each of the nine artistic nodes to examine ways of existing more equitably within our ongoing crises. “The artistic worlds presented here are not merely signifiers of extinction but real propositions for the unknown … Through these excessive modes\, we think about ways of non-being and the climate apocalypse itself in ways we have likely never considered—through kitsch\, rest\, cringe\, bathos\, abstraction\, silliness\, melancholy\, madness\, and the weird”. \nThe artists: \n\nMariam AlZayani\nFayçal Baghriche\nClemencia Echeverri\nUNMAKE LAB\nMalik Irtiza Zara Mahmood\nAmba Sayal-Bennett\nApichatpong Weerasethakul\nAyman Zedani\n\nNine Nodes of Non-Being emerged from a year-long journey as part of the 421 Curatorial Development Exhibition Program in collaboration with The Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR). \nTo 31 December.

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its tenth edition on 22 to 28 October with an official selection of 81 films from 37 countries (slightly down on last year\, which saw 90+ from 47 countries). But “the new edition promises to exceed audience expectations” said Sheikha Jawaher Bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, SIFF’s director\, in her press statement; certainly there will be three world premieres and no fewer than 53 Middle East premieres. \nThere are screenings in seven categories\, all competitive – Student Films\, GCC Short Films\, International Shorts\, Animations\, Animated Features\, and Feature Films. There’s also a Green Carpet platform which will offer audiences the chance to see films (four of them) with a director’s Q&A; there are also eight talks and ‘open discussions’. \nWe can’t currently tell you much more than that; the website does list what films are being shown and when\, but otherwise it’s largely bereft of useful information and clearly has some very outdated pages (including the director’s message\, which still refers to the online-only Festival of 2021). Apparently ticket prices are the normal charges for Vox films and you can book them online via the Vox website as usual; the main location is Vox City Centre Al Zahia but we understand Mirdif City Centre and City Centre Ajman will have the screenings as well. \nRight: still from Titina\, dir Kajsa Naess (Norway/Belgium\, 2022)

SUMMARY:Asma Belhamar: Solid Void
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition captures the tensions between shifting natural geographies and dynamic urban environments\, featuring new works inspired by the UAE’s architectural history. It narrates the topographic evolution of the UAE\, as influenced by Western classical modernity\, contemporary traditionalism in Islam\, and the historic trade relationships that shaped much of that landscape; the artist’s interpretation reveals the diversity and fragmentation of the design sensibilities that have made the nation’s aesthetic identity what it is today. \nSolid Void is the result of the 2023 edition of 421’s Artistic Development Program\, organised in collaboration with The Institute for Emerging Art. \nTo 31 December.

SUMMARY:Karama Arts Club: Local Matters – The Making of a Music Scene
DESCRIPTION:The intelligent networking session for creative peers is back after its summer break with an extended evening session – a social (with private bar) for members and guests (5.30 to 8.30) followed by the meat of the evening\, a panel discussion on the music scene locally. Panellists will “get right back to basics to dissect the current climate and present practical solutions to work towards a thriving local music scene” including “how the relentless pursuit of imported acts has overshadowed the potential of local talent and stunted the growth of a vibrant homegrown music scene”. \nThe panel: \n\nCharl Chaka Dubai-based creative\, artist\, and DJ who’s had a hugely influential role in shaping the local music scene since 2004. He’s responsible for INFUSION magazine\, too\nRima Rached Founder of Third Eye Crew and the Electric Days events (now rebranded as Vibe Series). Rima’s talent for spotting emerging artists has contributed to global dance music’s growth in the Middle East\nJayesh Veralkar Another of the top movers n shakers in Dubai’s alternate music scene. Part of the Dolby Middle East & Africa team\, founder of Vinyl Souk DXB\, co-founder of and a resident selector at Honeycomb Hi-Fi\nKaram Toubba A producer at Phenomena Productions\, creators of the Last Seen Live platform for local musicians. He’s played in bands since 2004\, was Music Director for Decibel DXB\, curates MiZa Community Radio\, and DJs himself\n\nTarik Omar moderates. His chops include Bahrain’s FarmFest\, establishing community arts space Malja in collaboration with Red Bull\, working with MUTEK’s DigiLab in Dubai\, and a day job as AV Coordinator at the Sharjah Art Foundation. \nThat should run from 8.30 to around 9.45pm\, and afterwards the private bar is open till 11. Incidentally\, KAC has stuck a new label on its panel sessions – the ‘Arts Unfiltered Series’\, which better describes the vibe they want to nurture. \nAccess to the Club’s evenings is free\, sort of\, but (a) you have to be a member … and membership is free\, too\, but you have to be nominated by an existing club member since this “ensures the sound\, organic growth of a trusted community”; and (b) the venue requires a minimum F&B spend in advance. These packages start at AED 75 for three soft drinks or AED 110 for two alcoholic drinks. But hey you were going to buy a drink anyhow\, right?
