Shortlisted artists for $50K Richard Mille Art Prize

Louvre Abu Dhabi and Swiss watchmaking brand Richard Mille have named the shortlist for The Richard Mille Art Prize. The seven artists will exhibit at Louvre Abu Dhabi in the Art Here 2021 exhibition from 18 November 2021 to 27 March, and one will then be selected as the winner of the $50,000 prize.

The aim of the exhibition and the prize is simple enough, “to highlight contemporary art and artists in the UAE, the region, and beyond” – though this edition, which coincides with the UAE’s 50th National Day Golden Jubilee, was limited to proposals from UAE-based artists.

A “large number” were received, and “the calibre and creativity of these submissions are reflective of the UAE’s thriving art scene” according to Dr Souraya Noujaim, Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Scientific, Curatorial and Collections Management Director, and a jury member for the shortlist selection.

The jury who selected the shortlist was headed by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman of UAE Unlimited, active art collector, and a patron of the Centre Pompidou, the British Museum and Sharjah Art Foundation. Also judging were Christine Macel, Chief Curator at the Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou; Hala Wardé, founding architect of HW Architecture and the long-term partner of Louvre Abu Dhabi architect Jean Nouvel; and Dr Souraya Noujaim from Louvre Abu Dhabi.
