Turandot is Puccini’s final opera, though he died with the opera incomplete and it was actually finished by a composer friend, Alfano. The story is a bit iffy for modern tastes – it’s about the man-hating Chinese queen Turandot, who kills her innocent male suitors when they fail to answer her three riddles, and Calàf, the man who finally melts her icy heart – but you can’t fault the music: the instantly recognisable tenor favourite Nessun Dorma isn’t the only big tune on offer, and there’s the eminently hummable Jasmine Flower motif.
This “magical” version of the opera, with 200+ artists under the direction of Roberto Andò, received much acclaim when it opened Shanghai Opera House’s 2018 Season.
There is a further performance on 7 September.
And for your further intellectual stimulation, here are the three riddles:
What is born each night and dies each dawn?
What flickers red and warm like a flame, but is not fire?
What is like ice, but burns like fire?
