The Weeping Woman (La Llorona): dir Jayro Bustamante (2019)
11 October @ 7.30 pm - 9.30 pmAED 52.50
The legend of La Llorona in Latin America is of a woman who was abandoned and became a wandering ghost weeping for her children; here it gets a uniquely Guatemalan twist, with a once feared but now frail general on trial for genocide. He is declared guilty but freed without punishment; then a mysterious young woman arrives to take a job in his household … Perhaps justice will be done.
The Weeping Woman is a powerful, sometimes surreal film that combines history and politics with myth and dreams; it shows how unresolved injustices haunt individuals and nation alike. Future generations are affected by the wounds the present generation ignores. The Weeping Woman was a winner at the Venice and San Sebastián film festivals this year.
In Spanish with English subtitles; screens again on 13 and 15 October. Shows in the Alternativo Latino season, a one-week celebration of Latin American cinema running 11-17 October at Cinema Akil.
