The Walworth Farce
6 June @ 8.00 pm - 10.00 pmFree, but contribution welcome
Danú Dubai’s last show of its season is Enda Walsh’s black comedy, directed and produced by Padraig Downey and starring Declan O’Sullivan as Dinny.
Dinny and his two sons have left Ireland for London, thanks to a series of absurd events following their grandmother’s funeral. Every day they rehearse the story of the funeral and what followed; their father is keeping the two sons safe in their top floor flat off Walworth Road in South London because the outside world is full of people put to get them. But then a local supermarket cashier follows son Sean back to the flat because he has accidentally taken the wrong shopping, and her presence opens up the fissures that have already been emerging …
“What are we if not our stories?” asks one character. The Walworth Farce explores the psychological impact of exile but also dependency on a mythologised version of the past – themes that recur frequently in Walsh’s writing. The result is a black comedy of the most twisted kind; “the craziest thing about Enda Walsh’s Walworth Farce is how quickly it starts making sense” said the New York Times, and a Guardian review concluded “if there is a bleaker, funnier or more desperate play in Edinburgh this year, I’ll eat my hat”.

Danú and Downey have form with Enda Walsh, having given us a rather good production of her New Electric Ballroom in 2018. Expect more of the same … There are 8pm performances on 6, 7, 8, and 11 June, with a 4pm matinee on 8 June as well.
