Canada Lee is the black parish priest in the backcountry of South Africa, who travels to Johannesburg to support his son accused of murdering a prominent white man. With the assistance of clergyman Reverend Msimangu (Sidney Poitier), he eventually meets the father of the murdered youth (Charles Carson); enemies at first, Kumalo and Jarvis gradually learn to respect one another, a symbol of the healing that would eventually destroy apartheid.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Alan Paton and the first major film shot in South Africa, albeit with interiors filmed at Shepperton Studios, this remains a powerful cinematic statements on racism and has stood the test of time.
