The Gauntlet: Faraway Together
31 March @ 8.00 pm - 9.30 pmFree
A one-of-a-kind intimate sonic experience, a libretto for headphones composed from poetic fragments and personal narratives of individuals from the community.
Every version of The Gauntlet is composed and staged for a specific location, normally composed by Sxip Shirey with choreography by Coco Karol. The piece created specifically for Abu Dhabi captures the cultural moment of placelessness brought on by the global pandemic, and deals with reconciling distance and connection at this time, in memories, and in notions of home and belonging.
Originally planned as an in-person event, the pandemic meant that it was adapted for an online audience. Using a specialised process of “movement interviews” that she has developed, co-creator Coco Karol zoom-interviewed 20 diverse people from Abu Dhabi; then composer Sxip Shirey drew from the interview texts to write an original choral score.
The NYUAD Choral Ensemble sings the score under the direction of Clare Lesser, recording their parts individually before they were transformed into an immersive sound installation for the audience to experience through headphones.
The premiere will be followed by a live online Q&A with Sxip Shirey, Coco Karol, and members of the creative and technical teams involved.
Tickets are free but online reservation is required.
