The Adventures of Prince Achmed

26 November @ 7.30 pm - 9.30 pm

Free but preregister

This free cine-concert – with live music accompanying a newly restored print of the film – looks a great way to celebrate the Jubilee.

In collaboration with Irtijal, the oldest music festival in Beirut, the cine-concert will be performed by four Lebanese musicians. Anthony Sahyoun is the founder of the Lebanese experimental ensemble Kinematik; Jad Atoui composes and performs electronic and electro-acoustic music and spearheaded the “Biosonics” project in collaboration with scientist Ivan Marazzi in 2015; Pascal Semerdjian co-founded the acclaimed Lebanese dream pop/shoegaze trio Postcards in 2013 (he’s the drummer and co-composer); and Fadi Tabbal is a well known musician, producer, and sound engineer. The four artists will interpret and improvise through a full-length live music set synchronised with scenes from the film.

And what a film. Three years in the making, Lotte Reiniger’s beautiful 1926 silhouette animation (the oldest surviving animated film) brings to life elements from the Arabian Nights. Made in hand-cut card and manipulated using sheets of lead joined by wires, Reiniger’s exquisite shadow characters move intricately through colourful worlds of demons, witches, beautiful princesses and flying castles. A handsome prince rides a flying horse to faraway lands and embarks on magical adventures, which include befriending a witch, meeting Aladdin, battling demons and falling in love with a princess …

The cine-concert promises “a completely original way to experience film and experimental music together, infusing new meaning into them. It’s part of the second German Film Festival organised by Goethe-Institut Gulf Region; 11 films will be screened in two locations, Alserkal Avenue in Dubai (all but this one at Cinema Akil) and Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi.
