Salman Al Najem: Mihrab
Bahraini artist Salman Al Najem joins Engage101 for the online platform’s first showcase for an artist from outside UAE. Al Najem’s artworks are spray-painted with a fluid approach that explores what the artist calls “the social application of religion”. What he calls ‘Khaleeji satire’ is the theme at the heart of the series; and paraphrasing André Gide, he has a message for the season – that “art is a collaboration between God and man, the less man the better”.
In the 25+ works presented, Al Najem intentionally places “unconventional characters” in the sacred setting of the mihrab, the Imam’s prayer wall facing Mecca. “The work is about the Mihrab, the Mihrab is in the mosque, and Ramadan is when mosques are the most full,” Al Najem notes.
To 13 May.
