It Ain’t Where You From: dir Philip Jamal Rachid (2021)
7 September @ 8.00 pm - 9.30 pmFree but preregister
Middle East Premiere of a film co-commissioned by The Arts Center and Shubbak Festival (the UK’s largest biennial festival of contemporary Arab culture) with perosnal stories of the Gulf’s emerging hip-hop scene.
The film combines cutting-edge street fashion, vibrant colours and a pulsating soundtrack. It works on several levels: it captures the melting-pot feel of the Gulf, the journeys that artists have to take to follow their passion, the way global can tap into local, and how hip-hop gives voice to a third culture generation. Filmmaker Philip Rachid (aka Soultrotter) summarises much of this – he’s Iraqi Kurdish, born in Bulgaria, raised in the Netherlands, now lives in Dubai.
Participating artists include Ihab Darwish (composer), Tac (rapper), BBoy Jazzy Tilla, BBoy Spiky, DustyDust (street artist), BGirl Lana, BBoy Feraz, Maajed Ahmed (graffiti artist), BBoy Amer, Frezidante (DJ), BBoy Nabil ElKhayer, Kriman (BBoy/artist), Ynot (artist) and Mohamed Araki (composer).
It Ain’t Where You From is an offshoot of The Main Circle: 7.83, a cross-media documentary performance commissioned by The Arts Center that explores the perception of B-Boy culture across Middle Eastern cultures and traditions.
When you book a ticket you’ll be emailed with access details for watching the film and attending the live online Q&A that follows.
