Hair Mapping Body; Body Mapping Land

10 November 2021

An exhibition featuring three of the UAE cultural landscape’s most prominent voices. Works by Emirati artists Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim and Afra Al Daheri works are exhibited together for the first time under the curatorial vision of independent curator Munira Al Sayegh, who draws common threads between their seemingly disparate bodies of work.

The map proposed in this exhibition decodes and reintroduces land through the body, and the body through land. Afra Al Dhaheri’s practice utilises the body as its anchor, in particular hair, which becomes a tool that decodes the stories of time and the changes it brings; Al Dhaheri’s Fil Al Shaar drapes into ridges reminiscent of mountains or waves. Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim’s Khorfakkani s a cluster of sculptures that reflect ripple effects, manicured gardens, and orienting constellations; land and the sky are introduced as complementary elements to one another.

As part of the exhibition’s public programming, UAE-based artist Mohamed Khalid responds to this show, proposing an alternative way of mapping space and distance; over the course of this exhibition, he will be creating an ephemeral art piece in response to the works of Afra Al Dhaheri and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim.

The exhibition has been programmed by Alserkal Advisory for ICB Brookfield.

To 19 December.
