Tall Tales Productions’ production of Henrik Ibsen’s three-act tragedy is directed by Ramachandran Shanker, and it feels like an ambitious though undeniably meaty option (especially for Dubai): as one review puts it, “regular tragedy dealt mainly with the unhappy consequences of breaking the moral code. Ghosts, on the contrary, deals with the consequences of not breaking it”.
There aren’t too many laughs – the play opens with a widow telling her neighbourhood pastor that she’s set up an orphanage in memory of her late husband purely to deplete her husband’s wealth so that their son will not inherit anything from him; the father was an immoral, unfaithful man. And then things get no better: it turns out the son has already inherited something from him – syphilis – and is in love with the housemaid … who, as it happens, was fathered by the same man and is therefore his half-sister.
Stick with it, though; Ghosts has a reputation for demanding the best of its actors, and the sense of the past dictating our lives now is as accurate as it is oppressive. As the producers put it: “the ‘ghosts’ of the past will invade the present”.
