Geographies of Modernism: Considering the Modern Through India, Iran, and Turkey
9 December 2021 @ 7.00 pm - 8.30 pm
Here’s the academic counterpoint to the current NYUAD Art Gallery show of works from the Abby Weed Gray Collection of contemporary art from the eponymous countries. While there’s a widespread assumption that modern art basically means modern art from the West, it’s become clear that modernism has always been happening for different reasons at different times in different places. As scholars today retrace a more diverse, more complex story of modernism, how does this change the way we understand the history and practice of art?
This panel discussion is led by Lynn Gumpert, Director of the Grey Art Gallery at NYU and curator of the Modernisms: Iranian, Turkish, and Indian Highlights from NYU’s Abby Weed Grey Collection exhibition. Participants are independent curator Fereshteh Daftari; Vishakha Desai, Senior Advisor for Global Affairs at Columbia University; and Sarah-Neel Smith, Assistant Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at Maryland Institute College of Art.
