Gateway to the world: snapshots from the historic Sharjah Air Station
2 October @ 8.00 am - 5.00 pmAED 10
A collection of historic photographs from what was the first airfield in the UAE, opened in 1932 as a British staging post and refuelling stop for air routes from the UK via the Arabian Gulf to Iraq and India; the RAF built a runway on an area of hard, flat sand running northwest to southeast, and Imperial Airways built a resthouse and a control tower.
The original Sharjah Air Station was superseded by the new Sharjah International Airport in 1977. Today the original resthouse has become the Al Mahatta Museum, and the runway became King Abdul Aziz Street – which of course is now right in the town centre.
