Choreographer, artistic director and music composer Juan Manuel Fernandez Montoya (Farruquito is his stage name) brings his take on classical flamenco as seen through his gypsy heritage. “With this performance, I will unveil my most personal side”, he says: “staying true to traditional roots, while also presenting the current state of flamenco, as I see it.”
Farruquito is widely regarded as one of the best flamenco artists of his generation. He’s been dancing in public since the age of five, when he performed with his grandfather El Farruco, himself renowned as one of the greatest ever flamenco dancers. Farruquito’s style is reportedly more polished and certainly more choreographed, adding glamour and theatricality to the spectacle of classical flamenco dance.
The current show is something of a greatest hits compilation (“the best moments from past performances”) but also features new routines. We’re promised “the pure gypsy essence present in so many real-life moments with family, weddings, and other celebrations. This is something that cannot be taught in a studio; it is learned through real-life experiences.
“I will also show improvisation, the origin of Flamenco, without losing sight of the overall choreographic structure of the show. Both of these elements are a part of my learning process. I am constantly pulling inspiration from the different periods of Flamenco that I have had the luck of witnessing in my life, along with the irreplaceable influence of Flamenco song and guitar.”
This should be a very good evening …
