Dragon and Phoenix – Centuries of Exchange between Chinese and Islamic Worlds
6 OctoberGeneral admission AED 60
Louvre Abu Dhabi’s second international exhibition of the year is a partnership with a dozen other institutions – notably the Musée Guimet in Paris, home to one of the world’s largest collections of Asian art. The show reflects on cultural and artistic exchange between the two civilisations between the 8th and the 18th centuries; more than 200 artworks from the collections of Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Musée Guimet and 12 international museums and institutions will feature both a physical exhibition at the museum and an online experience. There will also be what’s described as a wide-ranging cultural programme.
The press release says Dragon and Phoenix particularly aims to highlight “unconventional centres of artistic and cultural production”. it will shed light on how centuries of cultural exchange and the prolific artistic production between the two worlds reveal a dominance of coveted luxury materials and artworks during the ten centuries covered by the exhibition.
Dragon and Phoenix is curated by Sophie Makariou, President of the Musée Guimet, with the support of Souraya Noujaim and Guilhem André from Louvre Abu Dhabi. Dr Noujaim, Louvre AD’s Scientific, Curatorial and Collections Management Director, noted that the exhibition “reinforces the role of Louvre Abu Dhabi in highlighting transcultural relationships as well as the need to adopt novel approaches in the field of historical research. For nearly a thousand years – from the 8th century to the threshold of the 18th century – these two cultures were entwined through trade, scientific curiosity, and artistic production. Each observed and inspired the other.
“Our story of mutual influence and inspiration ends deliberately at the cusp of the 18th century, when alternative models with a radically new aesthetic appeared.”
Pre-purchased tickets are required to visit the Louvre (purchase via the museum’s website); adult admission is AED 60, but there are many discounts options and there’s no extra charge for this exhibition. The Louvre is open daily except Mondays.
Dragon and Phoenix runs to 12 February 2022.
