Cleo from 5 to 7 (Cléo de 5 à 7): dir Agnès Varda (1964)
15 November @ 7.00 pm - 9.00 pmAED 52.50
Agnès Varda eloquently captures Paris in the 60s with this real-time portrait of a singer (Corinne Marchand) driftng in the city as she awaits biopsy results for a cancer test.
It’s thoroughly engaging, and manages to be a personal story that chronicles of the minutes of one woman’s life – it starts at 5pm while she’s waiting for the results, and they arrive towards the end of the two-hour period – as well as a proto-feminist film (Cléo complains that no one takes her seriously because she’s a woman, and that the men think that she’s faking her illness for attention) with an existential overlay (she struggles with her existence and the potential of her mortality). Cleo from 5 to 7 is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and Left Bank melodrama, featuring a score by Michel Legrand and cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina.
Shows in Cinema Akil’s short Agnès Varda retrospective.
