Caracalla Dance Theatre: A Thousand and One Nights
26 September @ 8.00 pm - 10.00 pmAED 210 – AED 840
First of two performances for the UAE premiere of this work by the Beirut-based dance company in the new theatre in Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Foundation. A grand musical and balletic trilogy that has toured the world, One Thousand and One Nights should be a spectacular show that takes audiences on a magical journey to a faraway land … Featuring a cast of around 40 dancers, singers and actors with music from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and Ravel’s Boléro among other favourites.
It’s a pricey ticket, but Caracalla shouldn’t be missed. Its founder Abdul-Halim Caracalla trained under the dance icon Martha Graham in the 1960s and when he founded his company in 1968 his goal was to create a dance language based on Martha Graham disciplines blended with Arabic heritage. The current choreographer is his daughter Alissar Caracalla, and her spectacular productions echo Graham’s technique but with a distinctly un-Graham-like extravagance; it’s based on a solid classical ballet vocabulary and a wide array of Eastern and Middle Eastern folk dance, intermixed with acrobatics and contemporary jazz-like movement. As one review put it: “the dancers skim over the stage in one breath of surging humanity – we’d give our teeth to join in …”
