Abu Dhabi Art – opening ceremony
20 November @ 6.00 pm - 9.00 pmAED 100
Abu Dhabi Art opens with a publicly accessible reception – you just need the AED 100 ticket, which is good for all four days and lets you at the complimentary food, beverages, and performances this evening.
The main Abu Dhabi Art programme runs 21 to 23 November, with the usual mix of exhibitions, art installations, talks, workshops and performances.
Key components (apart from the art fair, which remains the raison d’etre) include the Beyond series – Beyond: Artist Commissions consists of commissions for established contemporary artists to make site-specific works in Al Ain; and Beyond: Emerging Artists gives three emerging artists in the UAE a platform to develop their practice and realise ambitious art projects. The artists are invited to undertake a year-long programme under the mentorship and supervision of a guest curator, ahead of their projects being displayed in November.
The annual Gateway exhibition will also return this year, highlighting local and international artists through a unique curatorial approach with a guest curator. The Talks Programme promises “a series of stimulating cultural talks, conversations and book launches featuring some of the art world’s leading figures”. We should also see some of the fruits of the Art + Technology artist’s residency at Khalifa University; and the winning project in the Pavilion Prize architecture competition for UAE students will be on show at the fair.
Artist and writer Ebtisam Abdulaziz has been selected for the fair’s visual campaign. “Working with Abu Dhabi Art is a unique opportunity, and the event itself has inspired my new series [Life in a Bag]; it documents visitors’ bags from Abu Dhabi Art 2018, reflecting the diverse cultures and personalities it brings together. I think of them as portraits; through these items, culture, personality, social life, and different tastes are captured.”
