Arrival and departure areas at Dubai Airports are to get a whole new set of “reading opportunities” that go well beyond the usual options of departure boards and coffeshop price lists. Dubai Culture is to provide e-books and library corners for passengers travelling through Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum International (DWC) airports, in addition to mini-libraries, books and other reading services.
Dubai Culture says it will also develop “complementary programmes … that promote the UAE’s cultural and national identity”.
It should all be live by March 2017, to coincide with the UAE’s National Month of Reading. Support for the UAE’s ten-year National Strategy for Reading is the principal aim, though Dubai Culture also has a commercial to present Dubai as a global hub and to promote Dubai’s position as a cultural destination.
There’s no word yet on what kind of content will be available and in what form.
DXB is the world’s largest airport by passenger volume; something over 85 million passengers will pass through it this year.
