SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Fertile Dreams
DESCRIPTION:The group show brings together artists from the MENA region and its diaspora whose practices engage fertility as a generative force tied to questions of origin\, transformation\, and the cycles that govern land and self. Across drawing\, painting\, ceramics\, textiles\, and installation\, they turn to rhythmic repetition as a shared method of accessing unconscious and symbolic worlds; rooted in Surrealist philosophy yet resonant with the mystic patterns of Middle Eastern spiritual traditions\, their works open passages between body and land\, spirit and matter\, dream and physicality.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohammad Alfaraj: Seas are sweet\, fish tears are salty
DESCRIPTION:The first institutional solo exhibition of Mohammad Alfaraj brings together installations\, photography\, video works and site-specific commissions that respond to the gardens and outdoor spaces of the Jameel. Central to Alfaraj’s practice is his use of storytelling\, both in written and oral forms; Alfaraj\, who lives and works in the Saudi oasis city of Al-Ahsa\, draws much of his source material from the area’s distinctive agricultural landscapes\, oral traditions and everyday life\, which he expands into universal stories and parables.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Aliyah Alawadhi: Girl Parts
DESCRIPTION:“Childhood is a half-remembered taste: sweet\, sticky\, and sometimes spoiled.” In Girl Parts\, her first solo exhibition\, Aliyah Alawadhi expresses this residue in paint – bodies shimmering in pinks and creams\, mouths agape\, devouring and dreaming. Says the gallery: “These are not nostalgic visions of innocence but reimaginings of ‘girl’: an ancient inheritance of edicts around beauty\, shame\, and desire\, rewritten here with magic\, rage\, and much speculation”. \nThis Hunna Art exhibition is curated by Océane Sailly.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE SILA: All that is Left to You
DESCRIPTION:In times of adversity\, especially amid the ongoing devastation in Gaza\, tatreez – the ancient practice of hand-embroidery\, a foundational element of Palestinian intangible heritage – becomes an act of survival and defiance. This exhibition of works by 25 artists honours the centuries-old practice and reimagined it through a contemporary lens. Several of the featured works are the result of direct collaboration with master embroiderers from the Inaash Association\, ensuring the preservation of the authenticity and the evolving spirit of tatreez. \nThe participating artists: \nAmer Shomali\nAbdel Rahman Katanani\nAreen Hassan\nAya Haidar\nBokja\nCristiana de Marchi\nDahouk Chamsi-Pasha\nFarah Behbehani\nHazem Harb\nKatya Traboulsi\nJoanna Barakat\nLeila Jabre Jureidini\nLiane Al Ghusain\nMaysaloun Faraj\nNada Debs\nNaima Almajdobah\nnaqsh collective\nNour Hage\nOmarvis\nSama Alshaibi\nSamar Hejazi\nSamia Halaby\nTala Hammoud Atrouni\nSteve Sabella\nZaid Farouki

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Salma Dib: Marks of Return
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from the charged visual language of street walls in Palestine in this\, her first solo exhibition in the UAE\, Salma Dib transforms those surfaces of resistance into layered compositions that speak of loss\, resilience\, and collective memory. Her works – painting\, installation\, and textile – become vessels of remembrance\, where every mark holds the weight of history and the quiet persistence of a people. The exhibition invites viewers to move through fragments of memory and presence\, reflecting on how the act of return continues to shape identity\, community\, and the hope for what endures …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Gil Heitor Cortesão: All That Is Solid
DESCRIPTION:Gil Heitor Cortesão’s fifth solo show at CARBON 12 (it is also the gallery’s 100th exhibition) presents a suite of large and small works extending his investigation into the fragile perceptive systems and architectures of modernity. Working with oil on plexiglass\, Cortesão constructs images that hover between coherence and dissolution\, framing painting as a system at once striving for and resisting cohesion; at the heart of this new body of work lies the artist’s ongoing series of photographs of modernist interiors and glass structures\, reconfigured and filtered by colour\, space\, and mood.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE By the Movement of All Things
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition curated by Hamzeh Alfarahneh of South African curatorial firm Art(Advisory) and featuring works by Hamra Abbas (Pakistan)\, Diana Al-Hadid (Syria-USA)\, Timo Nasseri (Iran-Germany)\, and four South Africans – Igshaan Adams\, Moshekwa Langa\, James Webb\, and Bronwyn Katz. \nThe exhibition continues Alfarahneh’s ongoing investigation into Global Majority abstract practices\, focusing on the affinities and resonances between South African and Middle Eastern non-figurative approaches. The title\, borrowed from Aimé Césaire’s Notebook of a Return to My Native Land\, sets the tone of active participation\, inviting the viewer to engage with the works not merely by projecting meaning but also by reflecting their own lived experiences.

SUMMARY:Romeo and Juliet
DESCRIPTION:This is a true classic of ballet\, and it is always danced best by a company that follows the classical tradition rigorously – which is what you traditionally get from Russian companies\, of course. This production is not from the Moscow State Ballet\, despite what the publicity claims; it is however from the Russian State Ballet Mari El\, a company based in Mari El republic; established in the early 2000s\, the company is known for its commitment to classical ballet technique and has gained a reputation for the quality and accessibility of its performances; so this one should be on the button. Music by Sergei Prokofiev\, classic choreography by Konstantin Ivanov – a former Bolshoi soloist who is the State Ballet Mari El’s creative and administrative director.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ali Kaaf: The Fire’s Edge
DESCRIPTION:Ali Kaaf’s first solo exhibition at Ayyam Gallery features his seminal body of work\, the Rift series\, alongside selected works from his Helmet and Ras Ras series. \nThe Fire’s Edge evokes the fragile threshold where ancestral practices meet modern erasure – marking not only the line between scorched earth and fertile soil\, but also the vanishing space where knowledge\, ritual\, and ecology once intertwined. The title of the exhibition thus suggests a meditation on disappearance and persistence\, on how destruction\, drought\, and extraction cast a shadow over the possibility of renewal.

SUMMARY:LAST CHNACE Ali Kaaf: The Fire’s Edge
DESCRIPTION:The artist’s first solo show at Ayyam Gallery features Kaaf’s seminal body of work from his Rift\, Helmet and Ras Ras series. \nThe Fire’s Edge evokes the fragile threshold where ancestral practices meet modern erasure\, the line between scorched earth and fertile soil but also the vanishing space where knowledge\, ritual\, and ecology once intertwined. Says the gallery: “the title of the exhibition suggests a meditation on disappearance and persistence\, on how destruction\, drought\, and extraction cast a shadow over the possibility of renewal …” \nWith Kaaf’s photographic works in the Ras Ras series\, the medium is manipulated by fire. The Helmet series explores the intersection of past and present via blown-glass helmets thatv evoke the fragility of memory. Much like Kaaf’s use of paper in the Rift series — a material that is both resilient and inherently delicate — glass becomes a poetic vessel for themes of endurance and vulnerability.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Silajit Ghosh: Abstract Reality
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the noted Indian artist\, whose paintings aim to explore the essence of reality rather than its literal representation. His signature use of strong colours evoke emotions rather than depictions – “his works feel like waves\, each with its own rhythm and spiritual undertone\, capturing vitality\, positivity\, and a profound sense of harmony” says the gallery.

SUMMARY:Hussein Al Mohasen: The Truth
DESCRIPTION:New work from the Saudi artist\, who has been exhibited all over the Middle East since 1999. His practice is shaped by poetry from the Arab world and “the complex intersections between modern spaces and personal freedoms”; he aims to present the contemporary Arab experience after the fashion of the poetry and music\nthat inspired him. \nThe title is explained by the artist’s curatorial text: “I believe that visual art is an important medium to make people see and perceive the truth … With my new body of work I am trying to reach what is beyond reality\, to go where I want the viewers to experience a visual journey\, which makes them see reality in a hopeful\, peaceful\, manner; even if reality\, sometimes\, is not as desirable as we want …” \nTo 5 February.

SUMMARY:Tamerlano
DESCRIPTION:Once he settled in London\, Handel almost single-handedly created a craze for Italian opera seria\, a style of opera that was predicated on providing solo arias for star virtuoso singers; Tamerlano is one of his best-known\, composed in less than three weeks of 1724 (in the same year he also composed two other operas which have entered the canon\, Rodelinda and Giulio Cesare). The opera’s subject is the defeat of the Ottoman emperor Bajazet and his enslavement by the ruthless Tamerlano\, and Tamerlano is regarded as the most genuinely tragic of Handel’s operas. \nThis “reimagining” by the flamboyant director (and designer of sets\, costumes and lighting\, and choreographer) Stefano Poda\, who has a reputation for striking\, symbolic staging\, blends Handel’s score with “a new musical concept” by composer Kirill Richter that weaves in traditional Uzbek instruments – Tamerlano\, aka Tamerlaine\, Amir Temur or Tamburlaine\, was the leader of the Tartars and is therefore claimed as an early Uzbekh (and this performance is presented by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation).  The sets feature monumental structures inspired by Timurid architecture\, kinetic installations\, and immersive lighting; and Poda has assembled more than 160 artists — singers\, ballet dancers\, the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan\, the State Choir\, and a number of national ensembles — to create a world of music\, movement\, and visual poetry. The scale\, ambition and expense are all impressive; as the blurb has it\, “Dubai has never witnessed an operatic production of this magnitude”. \nThere’s a second performance on 11 January. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohammed Joha: Houselessness
DESCRIPTION:In his latest work\, Palestinian artist Mohammed Joha redefines collage as “an architecture of rupture and reassembly\, both a method and a metaphor”. His works bring together scraps of fabric\, paper\, cardboard\, plastic and other salvaged materials\, textures pulled from shattered environments and fragments of personal history\, to form compressed\, jostling topographies; they convey not only violence and destruction\, but also endurance and resistance: a continuation of life within erasure.

SUMMARY:An Unwritten Country: Frauke Heard-Bey in conversation with Meitha Al Mazrooei
DESCRIPTION:Historian and author Frauke Heard-Bey joins scholar Meitha Almazrooei to discuss the long arc of writing and archiving history. Heard-Bey’s landmark publication From Trucial States to United Arab Emirates\, first published in 1982\, is an essential source for anyone interested in the development of the country; its author is a thoughtful and inspiring speaker on the subject of the role of documentation and the historical record. This should be a fascinating conversation about attending to the past in the present moment. \nThis is a public event associated with the Jameel’s Night School 2026\, an intensive five-week seminar programme (which itself is now fully subscribed).
