SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This production debuted for four performances in May and two in July; all sold out (deservedly). It’s now back for a run at Theatre by QE2 and these are its last two shows (at 3pm and 8pm). \nIt’s an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. They reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at the Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole\, and there were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. Matthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. \n

SUMMARY:Alserkal Art Week
DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Art Week returns 17-25 November. As usual many of the galleries will be opening new shows during the week (we count ten: they’re listed separately in the Agenda)\, but the Alserkal Avenue people have been developing a programme themselves to provide lots more reasons to visit the Avenue – screenings\, performances\, open studios\, symposia\, workshops\, and slow art walks. This year there is a theme\, ‘Acts of Presence’\, to emphasise “the importance of togetherness and connection amidst an increasingly divided world”. \nOur pickouts:\nMade Present: Biographies of Artworks Defying the Ongoing Nakba Curated by Faris Shomali and Zaina Zarour\, this ‘research exhibition’ charts the survival of over ten Palestinian artworks\, foregrounding the extensive history of artists who have gone to great lengths to ensure their works remain visible. “While the history of Palestine’s art is often depicted as one of loss\, fragmentation\, colonial plunder\, and destruction\, this exhibition offers an alternative historiography – one in which these artworks defy attempts at erasure.” Warehouse 50\, details here. \nWalk With Me: Public Art Commissions Now in its second iteration\, this series of site-specific public art commissions (curated by Zoé Whitley and presented by Alserkal Arts Foundation) sited around the Avenue are intended to reflect on fragility\, resilience\, and public memory. There are four artists with work on show: Dima Srouji\, Asma Belhamar\, Abbas Akhavan and Vikram Divecha. Information here\, and there’s a tour of the works at 4pm on 17 November led by Whitley\, Divecha and Belhamar; free\, but register for a place here. \nSlow art walks A thoughtful amble through exhibitions\, public art\, and hidden corners of the Avenue. There are two\, both on 23 November; one at 4pm with writer/curator Yalda Bidshahri\, the other at 5pm with Priyanka Mehra of Ishara Art Foundation. We’re not sure where these start – A4 space is usually a good bet – and they don’t seem to need preregistration. \nMajlis Talks This edition of Majlis Talks is entitled ‘Acts of Presence: Stories of Africa’s Creative Leaders’. Curated by Charlotte Ashamu\, it is a series of four discussions and demonstrations with alternative voices from Ghana\, Ethiopia\, South Africa\, and Côte d’Ivoire. 17 November\, 5.30-7pm; free\, but register here. \nDomestic Departures: (Im)mobility\, loss and resilience in an uncertain world Recipients of Alserkal Arts Foundation Research Grants 2022-2024 present multidisciplinary projects that address permanence and belonging via conversations and research displays with six practitioners – Khalda El Jack\, Zainab Gaafar\, Lubnah Ansari\, Natasha Maru\, Rhea Shah\, and Maitha AlSuwaidi – using experimental cartography\, immersive installations\, and independent zines. Central to the exhibition is Dissuader\, a monumental allegorical pigeon sculpted from stainless steel and birchwood\, symbolising the complex dynamics between humans and their environment. SUMMARY:Al Ain Book Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:AABF has changed its nomenclature from ‘book fair’ to ‘book festival’ for 2024\, but this is till an important date for Arab-language publishers – and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC)\, which organises it\, has reported a “significant” increase in publisher registration requests for this 15th edition: the 260 registrations represents better than a twothirds increase on 2023. AABF promotes the Arabic language as “a fundamental pillar of cultural identity\, and a repository of the values\, traditions\, and the rules of conduct (Sanaa’)\, upon which the UAE was founded and from which its unique development journey began – a journey that starts and ends with the human being”. Last year’s fair attracted more than 95\,000 visitors. \nThe ‘festival’ element implies that there will be a lot of sideshows and associated events\, but right now the website is still promoting 2023 and we can’t tell you what they might be. No doubt this will be rectified nearer the time … Note that these dates are a change to the original schedule\, which had AABF opening on 18 November.

DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Alyazia Al Nahyan: In the Breath of Decay
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Emirati artist to open this new gallery in Abu Dhabi’s Mina al Zayed. Al Nahyan’s practice is based on foraging — materials she collects on her walks through her family farm and elsewhere\, are accentuated in the shapes they leave behind after being subjected to bleach and vinegar. Nadine Khalil\, who curates the exhibition\, describes Al Nahyan as “an artist who lets the natural world take the lead in her process of mark-making … She is interested in how a landscape can hold memories and renders this thought in subtle\, abstract works that represent both zoomed-out and magnified perspectives”. \nTo 20 January. \nFounded in 2020 and rooted within the UAE art scene\, Iris Projects describes itself as a socially-driven visual arts and culture agency that “seeks to be an agent of cultural transformation”. The gallery will be open to the public by appointment only. Future programming is planned to include talks\, panels and guided tours of exhibitions; artists represented by Iris (and from whom we can presumably expect future shows) include Abdullah Al Othman\, Juma Al Haj\, Roudhah Al Mazrouie\, and Shamsa Al Omaira.

SUMMARY:Korea National Contemporary Dance Company: Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Our everyday lives are sometimes like a jungle\, where everybody has to fight for survival in their own way. This work for 17 dancers of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company interprets the jungle as a place of collisions between instinct and vitality of the body; it demonstrates how making and being made\, the hidden and the revealed\, relaxation and tension can run parallel to each other. \nFor Kim Sung-yong\, the company’s director and artistic director\, choreography is a process of searching for what he wants to express in the treasury of new things. Jungle\, which has toured widely\, is based on the movement research he terms ‘Process Init’\, which he developed with a focus on “sense and reaction”; through Process Init\, dancers are expected to awaken their individual concrete senses and explore mutual responses\, creating changes and expansions of movement. \nThis performance is part of the Abu Dhabi Festival.

DESCRIPTION:The 16th edition of Abu Dhabi Art has 102 galleries\, the largest number to date. It has five principal sectors: \nModern & Contemporary: for established galleries (who have been operating for at least seven years) with curatorial framework for booth presentations. This is the main section\, with more than 30 galleries showing \nSpecial Projects: solo or dual artist presentations by individual galleries – we count 28 of these \nEmerge: for artworks priced under $3\,000 – nine participants this year \nBidaya: for emerging galleries (operating for less than three years) who are first-time participants. There are two exhibitors \nFocus: galleries invited to participate with specific artists chosen by a guest curator. There are Focus sectors for Hong Kong\, Latin America\, Women Artists and Sustainability (some very interesting selections here\, curated by Riccarda Mandrini) \nThis year there’s also a new regional section called Something Bold\, Something New; eight participating galleries – most of them regular participants in Abu Dhabi Art – will present works by modernist artists “whose practices and legacies are long overdue recognition and appreciation”. \nSilk Road; Drifting Identities is another new section\, this one for artists and galleries from Central Asia and the Caucasus. “These seem important debuts\, because they open long-forgotten discussions around the Silk Road\, which has come to represent a journey of self-discovery for travellers\, a search for identity\, and a time of metamorphosis”. \nThe Collectors Salon is perhaps the most interesting innovation. It’s described as a response to the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s lead in exploring connections between civilisations and cultures across time; so eight exhibitors will present manuscripts\, astrolabes\, historical objects\, rare books and 19th century Orientalist paintings. \nAs well as the conventional art fair\, Abu Dhabi Art places a lot of emphasis on its public engagement programme – installations\, commissions\, exhibitions\, talks and events throughout the year. Worth catching are the Beyond Emerging Artists exhibits at the Manarat (this programme provides three emerging artists in the UAE – Dina Nazmi Korchid\, Simrin Mehra Agarwal\, Fatima Al Ali – with a platform from which to realise ambitious art projects) and installations in Al Ain (site-specific artworks at Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort)

DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Tanweer Festival promises “a three-day celebration that transcends language\, culture\, and borders” on 22\, 23 and 24 November in the desert at Mleiha\, itself a treasure of visual and archaeological significance. ‘Tanweer’ means something like ‘enlightenment’\, and the festival’s programme includes live music (headliners include Sami Yusuf and Senny Camara; there’s also gnawa\, oud\, and more); Emirati traditional dance and whirling dervish performances; poetry\, art\, and workshops. So there’s a distinct heritage vibe\, but there will be lots of food stalls too\, plus a marketplace and art installations. On-site experiences also include stargazing\, horseriding\, and “other activities that nurture a holistic sense of well-being”. One day passes are AED 700\, the weekend pass is AED 1\,650\, and camping is available.

DESCRIPTION:We don’t normally do fashion in magpie\, but we do have a soft spot for Goshopia and its founder Araceli Gallego\, repository and advocate respectively for sustainably-sourced don’t-scare-the-horses style in practical but very goodlooking wear\, mostly for women. And now Goshopia is offering a month-long exhibition at Chaka Arts’ place in Al Fahidi that “reimagines sustainable fashion as museum-worthy wearable art … FashionArte represents a significant milestone in Dubai’s sustainable fashion movement\, offering visitors the unique opportunity to experience eco-conscious fashion through an artistic lens while supporting ethical makers and designers”. \nSo\, “sustainable fashion as curated art pieces”? Ms Gallego says this “revolutionises the traditional retail experience”. At the very least it will be worth checking out some big claims … \nThe whole experience is very fashion-y\, with a catwalk and opening and closing parties (register in advance and you might get a ticket). A group of friends gathers for a dinner party\, only to find that something is not quite right – the kitchen staff have vanished\, the hostess is missing\, and the host has shot himself in the head (accidentally\, as it turns out). That’s just the start of the evening; as more guests arrive\, each adds their own twist to the unfolding situation … It’s really a very good play\, with clever dialogue and moments of tension amid the comedy. Jihane Tehini directs. \nThere are performances on 22\, 23 and 24 November at 8pm\, with a matinée at 2.30pm on 24 November. It’s played in English\, with subtitles in French too.
