SUMMARY:Behzad Khosravi Noori: The Life of an Itinerant Through a Pinhole
DESCRIPTION:Behzad Noori\, PhD is a self-described artist\, writer\, educator and necromancer; his research-based practice includes films\, installations\, and archival studies\, investigating histories from the Global South\, labour and the means of production\, and histories of political relationships that have existed as a counter narration to the east-west / north-south dichotomy. \nNoori uses personal experience as a springboard to establish a hypothetical relationship between memories and significant world events; this show analyses photographs made by his grandfather\, Gholamreza Amirbeigi\, between 1956 and 1968 – using images of working-class agency to consider an unconscious colonial memory and its formative influence on modern\, global southern subjectivity. \nTo 31 March.

SUMMARY:Negin Fallah\, Mai Al Remeithi\, Annie Kurkdjian: Contours of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:A group show for three female artists whose backgrounds\, experiences\, and practices converge in a shared exploration of cultural heritage\, personal memory\, and emotional landscapes. Negin Fallah examines the intersection of tradition and transformation\, where echoes of Iranian illuminated manuscripts and miniatures collide with contemporary narratives of human psychology\, mythology\, and naturalistic philosophy. Mai Al Remeithi’s minimalist compositions channel the architectural metamorphosis of the UAE\, echoing the nation’s balance of heritage and modernity. And Annie Kurkdjian‘s portraits\, often grotesque and haunting\, provide a window into the human psyche scarred by war and displacement. \nTo 30 November.

SUMMARY:Adel El Siwi: Yellow Tropics
DESCRIPTION:El Siwi’s first solo exhibition in over a decade features both new paintings and pieces from an archive of earlier works: “the paintings shown here collectively present philosophical provocations and musings” says the gallery. The title references Upper Egypt and the origin of man\, but also Egypt’s literal reach towards its African neighbours\, hinting at a desire to reclaim an element of identity as part of the Continent: “it is not simply Egypt’s Islamic and Mediterranean history and culture that inform his country’s identity\, but according to El Siwi\, a longer and earlier one … A conjuring of a shared Continental history of Africa\, and a desired alignment by the artist artistically and emotionally with a greater story of identity and history\, has resulted in an oeuvre unlike many artists of his generation”. \nTo 9 January. \nAbove: Adel El Siwi\, Head of The Princess. SUMMARY:Sharjah Film Platform 7
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual indie/experimental film festival returns for its seventh edition\, featuring around 30 UAE premieres. \nMost are in the Competition section\, documentary and fiction films that have been nominated by an international committee of filmmakers and industry professionals. Highlights include … \n◊ Kamal Al Jafari’s documentary A Fidai Film (2024) which seeks to reclaim the looted memories of Palestinian history by using archival footage\n◊ Places of the Soul (2023) by Hamida Issa\, which follows an environmental expedition to Antarctica while juxtaposing its icy landscape with the deserts of the filmmaker’s home country\n◊ Pham Ngoc Lan’s fiction feature Cu Li Never Cries (2024)\, a black and white film interweaving personal and political histories in current day Vietnam\n◊ The Great Yawn of History (2024) by Iranian filmmaker Aliyar Rasti\, a story about a middle-aged religious man who goes on a quest for hidden treasure. \nAmong the other films showing are two supported by Sharjah Art Foundation – From Ground Zero (2024)\, an anthology of 22 short films created by filmmakers from Gaza; and Upshot (2024)\, a short directed by Maha Haj\, which tells a story of a solitary couple and the aftermaths of a painful past. \nThe Director in Focus segment honours regional directors for their lifetime achievements in global cinema. Honoured this year is Mohamad Malas\, noted for his moving films chronicling the modern history of Syria and its neighbours. Along with the screening of The Dream (1987)\, The Night (1992) and the global premiere of Oh Father\, I Am Youssef (2024)\, Malas will give a masterclass on the role of storytelling. \nPresented in parallel with the film screenings\, a series of public programmes provides opportunities for learning and gathering. This year’s programme focuses on notions of modernity in new African and Asian film\, cinema as resistance and resilience from Palestine and beyond\, as well as innovations in documentary filmmaking\, among other topics. \nAlso part of this year’s SFP is the Sharjah Film Platform Feature Fund that will award AED 500\,000 to one UAE-based scriptwriter\, director or lead/executive producer for the completion of an English- or Arabic-language narrative feature currently under production. Formerly known as the Pitching Forum\, the strengthened fund should now provide more comprehensive and robust support to filmmakers in the country. \nSFP7 runs 15 to 24 November at the open-air Mirage City Cinema in Sharjah’s historical quarter\, and indoors at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. The full programme is here; most feature screenings are a bargain AED 15\, some are free. \n

SUMMARY:Tyrrell Winston: Life in the Fast Lane
DESCRIPTION:Winston’s work blends art with sports culture\, transforming everyday objects – deflated basketballs\, cigarette butts\, even the signatures of artists and athletes –into pieces that challenge viewers to reconsider the significance of these items; the results “resonate with resilience\, legacy\, and cultural identity” (says the gallery). His subject is the parallel struggles of athletes and artists\, speed and sacrifice\, the repetitive nature of success and the unseen sacrifices that lead to greatness. \nTo 12 December.

SUMMARY:Casablanca Beats: dir Nabil Ayouch (2021)
DESCRIPTION:Nabil Ayouch’s grittily authentic tale of a rapper turned teacher helping his students find their creative voices is a class act. It manages to combine familiar cinematic tropes like ‘strength through making music’ and the inspirational teacher with a taste of social realism\, discursive politics and accessible rebellion. \nShot over 15 months\, which allowed the project to grow organically and gave time for the screen first-timers to develop\, Ayouch’s cinéma vérité style camerawork gives the film a documentary feel\, but Khalid Benghrib’s choreography elevates the action above the everyday through scenes that take the cast from the classroom to the recording studio\, the stage and beyond. Casablanca Beats has an infectious energy that is both enticing and accessible. Highly recommended. \nScreens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Atlantis Live: Martin Garrix
DESCRIPTION:A gig at Atlantis for one of the big-name EDM producer/DJs who really does merit the acclaim. Last time he was here\, he sold out the place and delivered a great 150-minute performance with a terrific lights-and-lasers show and more than 100 speakers that closed with a top fireworks show – “mind-blowing effects and visuals that pushed beyond boundaries”\, opines the press bumf.  That featured “one of the largest purpose-built stage productions to ever land on the sandy shores of The Palm Island”; this time there will be more VIP space\, fan zones near the stage\, and even a staycation package (10% discount on rooms).

SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This production debuted for four performances in May and two in July; all sold out (deservedly). It’s now back for a run at Theatre by QE2 and these are its last two shows (at 3pm and 8pm). \nIt’s an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. They reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at the Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole\, and there were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. Matthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. \n

As usual many of the galleries will be opening new shows during the week (we count ten: they’re listed separately in the Agenda)\, but the Alserkal Avenue people have been developing a programme themselves to provide lots more reasons to visit the Avenue – screenings\, performances\, open studios\, symposia\, workshops\, and slow art walks. This year there is a theme\, ‘Acts of Presence’\, to emphasise “the importance of togetherness and connection amidst an increasingly divided world”. \nOur pickouts:\nMade Present: Biographies of Artworks Defying the Ongoing Nakba Curated by Faris Shomali and Zaina Zarour\, this ‘research exhibition’ charts the survival of over ten Palestinian artworks\, foregrounding the extensive history of artists who have gone to great lengths to ensure their works remain visible. “While the history of Palestine’s art is often depicted as one of loss\, fragmentation\, colonial plunder\, and destruction\, this exhibition offers an alternative historiography – one in which these artworks defy attempts at erasure.” Warehouse 50\, details here. \nWalk With Me: Public Art Commissions Now in its second iteration\, this series of site-specific public art commissions (curated by Zoé Whitley and presented by Alserkal Arts Foundation) sited around the Avenue are intended to reflect on fragility\, resilience\, and public memory. There are four artists with work on show: Dima Srouji\, Asma Belhamar\, Abbas Akhavan and Vikram Divecha. Information here\, and there’s a tour of the works at 4pm on 17 November led by Whitley\, Divecha and Belhamar; free\, but register for a place here. \nSlow art walks A thoughtful amble through exhibitions\, public art\, and hidden corners of the Avenue. There are two\, both on 23 November; one at 4pm with writer/curator Yalda Bidshahri\, the other at 5pm with Priyanka Mehra of Ishara Art Foundation. We’re not sure where these start – A4 space is usually a good bet – and they don’t seem to need preregistration. \nMajlis Talks This edition of Majlis Talks is entitled ‘Acts of Presence: Stories of Africa’s Creative Leaders’. Curated by Charlotte Ashamu\, it is a series of four discussions and demonstrations with alternative voices from Ghana\, Ethiopia\, South Africa\, and Côte d’Ivoire. 17 November\, 5.30-7pm; free\, but register here. \nDomestic Departures: (Im)mobility\, loss and resilience in an uncertain world Recipients of Alserkal Arts Foundation Research Grants 2022-2024 present multidisciplinary projects that address permanence and belonging via conversations and research displays with six practitioners – Khalda El Jack\, Zainab Gaafar\, Lubnah Ansari\, Natasha Maru\, Rhea Shah\, and Maitha AlSuwaidi – using experimental cartography\, immersive installations\, and independent zines. On 23 November\, 2-6pm at Jossa by Alserkal; free\, but register here. \nOpen Studios Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be opening the studios of its current residents – sound artist Jad Saliba\, writer and visual artist Sinzo Aanza\, academic researcher and mixed-media artist Thlana Bazik\, and filmmaker Pallavi Paul. Warehouse 50. \nOur Future(s) This “immersive experience” presented by the Dubai Future Foundation and Museum of the Future\, invites visitors to contemplate our collective futures via an installation that engages audiences through key statements and delicate sound whispers\, representing the uncertainties that shape our shared future. “Through this reflective space\, the Foundation aims to better understand public sentiment\, helping to shape informed strategies and innovative solutions for a more resilient and sustainable world.” Warehouse A1\, information here. \nDissuader: Art and Design This exhibition of work by the Italian designer and artist Franco Perrotti is another collaboration with partners\, in this case the Gieffe Group and Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. Central to the exhibition is Dissuader\, a monumental allegorical pigeon sculpted from stainless steel and birchwood\, symbolising the complex dynamics between humans and their environment. Warehouse 46.

SUMMARY:Al Ain Book Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:AABF has changed its nomenclature from ‘book fair’ to ‘book festival’ for 2024\, but this is till an important date for Arab-language publishers – and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC)\, which organises it\, has reported a “significant” increase in publisher registration requests for this 15th edition: the 260 registrations represents better than a twothirds increase on 2023. AABF promotes the Arabic language as “a fundamental pillar of cultural identity\, and a repository of the values\, traditions\, and the rules of conduct (Sanaa’)\, upon which the UAE was founded and from which its unique development journey began – a journey that starts and ends with the human being”. Last year’s fair attracted more than 95\,000 visitors. \nThe ‘festival’ element implies that there will be a lot of sideshows and associated events\, but right now the website is still promoting 2023 and we can’t tell you what they might be. No doubt this will be rectified nearer the time … Note that these dates are a change to the original schedule\, which had AABF opening on 18 November.

SUMMARY:Pina: dir Wim Wenders (2011)
DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Kaikhan Salakhov: Astral Space Exploration & dash; The Cosmic Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:Salakhov’s work is “a profound exploration of the intersection between science\, art\, and spirituality\, using sacred geometry to illuminate deep cosmic truths”. On show are 36 “meticulously crafted” acrylic paintings that reimagine Renaissance art through a modern lens\, blending classical aesthetics with contemporary scientific concepts; viewers are invited to explore the geometric language of the artworks\, uncovering deeper meanings and contemplating humanity’s future in space. Each painting addresses a specific topic and is accompanied by an explanation that poses questions for viewers to consider.

SUMMARY:Hadwin's Judgement: dir Sasha Snow (2015)
DESCRIPTION:A compelling hybrid of drama and documentary\, this film covers the events that led up to the infamous destruction of an extraordinary 300-year-old tree held sacred by the Indigenous Haida Nation of Haida Gwaii\, British Columbia. Inspired by John Vaillant’s award-winning book The Golden Spruce\, the film explores the complex character of Grant Hadwin\, a logging engineer and survivalist who lived and worked happily for many years in the region’s ancient forests. Witnessing the devastation wrought by clear-cutting\, Hadwin was finally driven to commit what some would say was an extraordinary and perverse act\, one that ran contrary to all he had come to value … \nInterweaving speculation\, myth and reality\, the film charts Hadwin’s emotional crusade against the destruction of the world’s last great temperate rainforest and explores the possible motives for his unprecedented crime. \n  \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nThe final film in the programme is Daniel Roby’s Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away\, screening on 26 November.

SUMMARY:Alyazia Al Nahyan: In the Breath of Decay
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Emirati artist to open this new gallery in Abu Dhabi’s Mina al Zayed. Al Nahyan’s practice is based on foraging — materials she collects on her walks through her family farm and elsewhere\, are accentuated in the shapes they leave behind after being subjected to bleach and vinegar. Nadine Khalil\, who curates the exhibition\, describes Al Nahyan as “an artist who lets the natural world take the lead in her process of mark-making … She is interested in how a landscape can hold memories and renders this thought in subtle\, abstract works that represent both zoomed-out and magnified perspectives”. \nTo 20 January. \nFounded in 2020 and rooted within the UAE art scene\, Iris Projects describes itself as a socially-driven visual arts and culture agency that “seeks to be an agent of cultural transformation”. The gallery will be open to the public by appointment only. Future programming is planned to include talks\, panels and guided tours of exhibitions; artists represented by Iris (and from whom we can presumably expect future shows) include Abdullah Al Othman\, Juma Al Haj\, Roudhah Al Mazrouie\, and Shamsa Al Omaira.

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:Continuing this seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. Why then has she been sidelined in art history?

SUMMARY:Korea National Contemporary Dance Company: Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Our everyday lives are sometimes like a jungle\, where everybody has to fight for survival in their own way. This work for 17 dancers of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company interprets the jungle as a place of collisions between instinct and vitality of the body; it demonstrates how making and being made\, the hidden and the revealed\, relaxation and tension can run parallel to each other. \nFor Kim Sung-yong\, the company’s director and artistic director\, choreography is a process of searching for what he wants to express in the treasury of new things. Jungle\, which has toured widely\, is based on the movement research he terms ‘Process Init’\, which he developed with a focus on “sense and reaction”; through Process Init\, dancers are expected to awaken their individual concrete senses and explore mutual responses\, creating changes and expansions of movement. \nThis performance is part of the Abu Dhabi Festival.

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Art: day two
DESCRIPTION:The 16th edition of Abu Dhabi Art has 102 galleries\, the largest number to date. It has five principal sectors: \nModern & Contemporary: for established galleries (who have been operating for at least seven years) with curatorial framework for booth presentations. This is the main section\, with more than 30 galleries showing \nSpecial Projects: solo or dual artist presentations by individual galleries – we count 28 of these \nEmerge: for artworks priced under $3\,000 – nine participants this year \nBidaya: for emerging galleries (operating for less than three years) who are first-time participants. There are two exhibitors \nFocus: galleries invited to participate with specific artists chosen by a guest curator. There are Focus sectors for Hong Kong\, Latin America\, Women Artists and Sustainability (some very interesting selections here\, curated by Riccarda Mandrini) \nThis year there’s also a new regional section called Something Bold\, Something New; eight participating galleries – most of them regular participants in Abu Dhabi Art – will present works by modernist artists “whose practices and legacies are long overdue recognition and appreciation”. \nSilk Road; Drifting Identities is another new section\, this one for artists and galleries from Central Asia and the Caucasus. “These seem important debuts\, because they open long-forgotten discussions around the Silk Road\, which has come to represent a journey of self-discovery for travellers\, a search for identity\, and a time of metamorphosis”. \nThe Collectors Salon is perhaps the most interesting innovation. It’s described as a response to the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s lead in exploring connections between civilisations and cultures across time; so eight exhibitors will present manuscripts\, astrolabes\, historical objects\, rare books and 19th century Orientalist paintings. \nAs well as the conventional art fair\, Abu Dhabi Art places a lot of emphasis on its public engagement programme – installations\, commissions\, exhibitions\, talks and events throughout the year. Worth catching are the Beyond Emerging Artists exhibits at the Manarat (this programme provides three emerging artists in the UAE – Dina Nazmi Korchid\, Simrin Mehra Agarwal\, Fatima Al Ali – with a platform from which to realise ambitious art projects) and installations in Al Ain (site-specific artworks at Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort)
