SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Istoria: A Retrospective Reimagining Middle Eastern Feminism with Leila Nseir
DESCRIPTION:This retrospective for the late Syrian artist honours Leila Nseir’s legacy and celebrates her contributions to art and feminism. \nNseir’s art was rooted in humanist concerns and feminist thought\, addressing themes of conflict\, inequality\, and poverty; her career was impacted by gender persecution and patriarchal attitudes\, both within her close-knit and broader communities. “Nseir’s intentional reinterpretation of historical forms demonstrates a distinctive fusion of intimacy\, complexity\, and human suffering” says the gallery. \nShe started with sculpture but deemed it too masculine a medium. She then embarked on a long journey in painting and drawing\, but developed oil paint poisoning. Transitioning from oils to acrylics\, graphite\, pastels\, and eventually developing a unique monotype woodcut print technique\, she continued to explore and push artistic boundaries. \nNseir’s later pieces delve into the complexities of diaspora\, migration\, and the interplay between tradition and modernity. She depicted females as a mirror\, reflecting Syria and its embodiment of strength\, complexity\, and intricacy.

SUMMARY:More Than Honey: dir Markus Imhoof (2012)
DESCRIPTION:“If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth\,” said Albert Einstein\, “man would have no more than four years left to live”. That’s because without the bees’ pollinating work\, agriculture could collapse and with it our ability to feed ourselves. \nWell\, all over the world bees have been dying for the past few years. Although the causes for this are still a mystery\, one thing is already clear: there is more at stake than simply a few dead insects\, and a great deal more than just honey. Imhoof’s documentary takes us on a journey to meet some of the people and places whose existence depends on bees – a Swiss beekeeper in the Alps\, the gigantic almond plantations of California\, a bee brain researcher in Berlin\, a pollen trader in China. His directorial style is laid back; there’s no hectoring here\, we can draw our own conclusions. And along the way there’s much to enjoy in this film\, with the mystery and beauty of bees emerging strongly – including the perennially fascinating question of whether individual bees are effectively buzzing cells in super-organisms: do they know more than us? \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)

SUMMARY:Animal: dir Cyril Dion (2021)
DESCRIPTION:16-year-old Bella and Vipulan are part of a generation that knows its very future is at risk – between climate change and the mass extinction of wildlife\, their world could well be inhabitable 50 years from now. At the instigation of director Cyril Dion\, who already nailed his colours to the mast with his 2015 investigative documentary  Tomorrow\, and the eminent primatologist Jane Goodall\, the two teenagers embark in an extraordinary quest: to travel around the world and meet with scientists and activists to find another way of living alongside other species\, more as roommates than predators. The two protagonists are simultaneously very ordinary and very engaging; Dion has produced a powerful argument for coexistence rather than competition\, and his skill is to let us draw our own conclusions. \nIn English with French subtitles.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Artist’s Rooms: Amba Sayal-Bennett
DESCRIPTION:Works spanning the last eight years of the artist’s practice that critically engage with the socio-political contexts of architectural heritage and modernist ideologies and aesthetics. Drawing is at the centre of Amba Sayal-Bennett’s practice\, expanding across works on paper\, projections and sculptural installations; she is particularly interested in the nature of abstraction\, using technology in the form of language\, tools\, methods and materiality to stage relations and engagement between human and non-human. \nWithin her work\, Sayal-Bennett critiques the tendency of colonial practices to decontextualise and appropriate. She traces the migration of architectural forms across continents\, such as to Chandigarh in Punjab\, the birthplace of her maternal grandparents\, and where Le Corbusier’s purpose-built city examines the failings of modernism in post-colonial contexts. She explores modernism’s rejection of ornamentalism as well as her interest in sci-fi aesthetics\, a genre which has long been criticised for its colonial overtones.

SUMMARY:Thaier Helal: Navigating Through Nothing
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition featuring Helal’s most recent body of work and a pivotal moment in the artist’s evolution\, a more straightforward yet deeply expressive style without the constraints of his previous methods. The new approach\, characterized by loose\, dynamic strokes\, invites viewers to engage with the artwork instinctually; “by focusing on the expressive potential of each stroke\, he draws on the tradition of abstraction\, where the act of painting becomes a narrative in itself” as the gallery puts it. \nTo 5 January. \nAbove: Thaier Helal\, Navigating Through Nothing (2024)

SUMMARY:Edgar Orlaineta: What We See of Things is the Things
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Mexican artist whose practice focuses on hybrid sculptural forms that draw inspiration from modernism\, popular culture\, and specific historic moments. In particular\, Orlaineta explores post-war design and architecture\, generally depicting biomorphic shapes with a strong surrealist influence. \nIn his new body of work\, Orlaineta reflects on the philosophical explorations of perception and essence\, challenging traditional notions of art and the birth point of objects through a profound engagement with materiality and meaning. His exploration of objects as non-functional or decontextualised allows him to strip them down to their purest form: a thing. What is it that differentiates things from objects\, or even from art? How do these things interact with their environment? Is it the environment that gives them meaning\, or vice versa? At what point during the process of making something\, does it actually become something? \nThrough his works\, Edgar Orlaineta seeks to eliminate any pre- conceptualised notions of the depicted objects\, reducing them to what they appear as to the naked eye: things. \nTo 25 January. \nAbove: Edgar Orlaineta\, (Da)Dandy (2024)

DESCRIPTION:Alhashemi’s second solo exhibition at the gallery is her first after returning from the States with a Master’s in Fine Arts. Curated by Nasser Abdullah\, this exhibition presents a series of works that build on her previous experiences\, “appearing as annotations and reflections that encapsulate different phases she has undergone since the beginning of her career”. From her early days with hand-printing and producing repetitive editions\, she has moved on to sculpture and ceramics\, then performance art and multimedia video; her practice is characterised by an ability to embrace mistakes and inconsistencies across editions\, a reconciled perspective on imperfection and difference that echoes the diversity of human nature. \nTo 6 January. \nAbove: Eman Alhashemi\, Vessel 205 (2024)

SUMMARY:Behzad Khosravi Noori: The Life of an Itinerant Through a Pinhole
DESCRIPTION:Behzad Noori\, PhD is a self-described artist\, writer\, educator and necromancer; his research-based practice includes films\, installations\, and archival studies\, investigating histories from the Global South\, labour and the means of production\, and histories of political relationships that have existed as a counter narration to the east-west / north-south dichotomy. \nNoori uses personal experience as a springboard to establish a hypothetical relationship between memories and significant world events; this show analyses photographs made by his grandfather\, Gholamreza Amirbeigi\, between 1956 and 1968 – using images of working-class agency to consider an unconscious colonial memory and its formative influence on modern\, global southern subjectivity. \nTo 31 March.

SUMMARY:Negin Fallah\, Mai Al Remeithi\, Annie Kurkdjian: Contours of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:A group show for three female artists whose backgrounds\, experiences\, and practices converge in a shared exploration of cultural heritage\, personal memory\, and emotional landscapes. Negin Fallah examines the intersection of tradition and transformation\, where echoes of Iranian illuminated manuscripts and miniatures collide with contemporary narratives of human psychology\, mythology\, and naturalistic philosophy. Mai Al Remeithi’s minimalist compositions channel the architectural metamorphosis of the UAE\, echoing the nation’s balance of heritage and modernity. And Annie Kurkdjian‘s portraits\, often grotesque and haunting\, provide a window into the human psyche scarred by war and displacement. \nTo 30 November.

SUMMARY:Adel El Siwi: Yellow Tropics
DESCRIPTION:El Siwi’s first solo exhibition in over a decade features both new paintings and pieces from an archive of earlier works: “the paintings shown here collectively present philosophical provocations and musings” says the gallery. The title references Upper Egypt and the origin of man\, but also Egypt’s literal reach towards its African neighbours\, hinting at a desire to reclaim an element of identity as part of the Continent: “it is not simply Egypt’s Islamic and Mediterranean history and culture that inform his country’s identity\, but according to El Siwi\, a longer and earlier one … A conjuring of a shared Continental history of Africa\, and a desired alignment by the artist artistically and emotionally with a greater story of identity and history\, has resulted in an oeuvre unlike many artists of his generation”. \nTo 9 January. \nAbove: Adel El Siwi\, Head of The Princess. SUMMARY:Sharjah Film Platform 7
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual indie/experimental film festival returns for its seventh edition\, featuring around 30 UAE premieres. \nMost are in the Competition section\, documentary and fiction films that have been nominated by an international committee of filmmakers and industry professionals. Highlights include … \n◊ Kamal Al Jafari’s documentary A Fidai Film (2024) which seeks to reclaim the looted memories of Palestinian history by using archival footage\n◊ Places of the Soul (2023) by Hamida Issa\, which follows an environmental expedition to Antarctica while juxtaposing its icy landscape with the deserts of the filmmaker’s home country\n◊ Pham Ngoc Lan’s fiction feature Cu Li Never Cries (2024)\, a black and white film interweaving personal and political histories in current day Vietnam\n◊ The Great Yawn of History (2024) by Iranian filmmaker Aliyar Rasti\, a story about a middle-aged religious man who goes on a quest for hidden treasure. \nAmong the other films showing are two supported by Sharjah Art Foundation – From Ground Zero (2024)\, an anthology of 22 short films created by filmmakers from Gaza; and Upshot (2024)\, a short directed by Maha Haj\, which tells a story of a solitary couple and the aftermaths of a painful past. \nThe Director in Focus segment honours regional directors for their lifetime achievements in global cinema. Honoured this year is Mohamad Malas\, noted for his moving films chronicling the modern history of Syria and its neighbours. Along with the screening of The Dream (1987)\, The Night (1992) and the global premiere of Oh Father\, I Am Youssef (2024)\, Malas will give a masterclass on the role of storytelling. \nPresented in parallel with the film screenings\, a series of public programmes provides opportunities for learning and gathering. This year’s programme focuses on notions of modernity in new African and Asian film\, cinema as resistance and resilience from Palestine and beyond\, as well as innovations in documentary filmmaking\, among other topics. \nAlso part of this year’s SFP is the Sharjah Film Platform Feature Fund that will award AED 500\,000 to one UAE-based scriptwriter\, director or lead/executive producer for the completion of an English- or Arabic-language narrative feature currently under production. Formerly known as the Pitching Forum\, the strengthened fund should now provide more comprehensive and robust support to filmmakers in the country. \nSFP7 runs 15 to 24 November at the open-air Mirage City Cinema in Sharjah’s historical quarter\, and indoors at VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. The full programme is here; most feature screenings are a bargain AED 15\, some are free. \n

SUMMARY:Tyrrell Winston: Life in the Fast Lane
DESCRIPTION:Winston’s work blends art with sports culture\, transforming everyday objects – deflated basketballs\, cigarette butts\, even the signatures of artists and athletes –into pieces that challenge viewers to reconsider the significance of these items; the results “resonate with resilience\, legacy\, and cultural identity” (says the gallery). His subject is the parallel struggles of athletes and artists\, speed and sacrifice\, the repetitive nature of success and the unseen sacrifices that lead to greatness. \nTo 12 December.

SUMMARY:Casablanca Beats: dir Nabil Ayouch (2021)
DESCRIPTION:Nabil Ayouch’s grittily authentic tale of a rapper turned teacher helping his students find their creative voices is a class act. It manages to combine familiar cinematic tropes like ‘strength through making music’ and the inspirational teacher with a taste of social realism\, discursive politics and accessible rebellion. \nShot over 15 months\, which allowed the project to grow organically and gave time for the screen first-timers to develop\, Ayouch’s cinéma vérité style camerawork gives the film a documentary feel\, but Khalid Benghrib’s choreography elevates the action above the everyday through scenes that take the cast from the classroom to the recording studio\, the stage and beyond. Casablanca Beats has an infectious energy that is both enticing and accessible. Highly recommended. \nScreens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Atlantis Live: Martin Garrix
DESCRIPTION:A gig at Atlantis for one of the big-name EDM producer/DJs who really does merit the acclaim. Last time he was here\, he sold out the place and delivered a great 150-minute performance with a terrific lights-and-lasers show and more than 100 speakers that closed with a top fireworks show – “mind-blowing effects and visuals that pushed beyond boundaries”\, opines the press bumf.  That featured “one of the largest purpose-built stage productions to ever land on the sandy shores of The Palm Island”; this time there will be more VIP space\, fan zones near the stage\, and even a staycation package (10% discount on rooms).

SUMMARY:The Ice Hole – A Cardboard Comedy
DESCRIPTION:This production debuted for four performances in May and two in July; all sold out (deservedly). It’s now back for a run at Theatre by QE2 and these are its last two shows (at 3pm and 8pm). \nIt’s an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. They reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at the Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole\, and there were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh. Matthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht\, two-time winners of the local Short+Sweet Dubai Theatre Festival\, for Complices Théâtre. \n
