SUMMARY:Synchrony: From New York to Nigeria
DESCRIPTION:This is a rather special evening for the second edition of NYUAD’s The City and the Writer series\, featuring an extraordinary lineup of writers\, directors\, actors\, and musicians and centred around Awam Amkpa’s 2024 film The Man Died (above). That is based on Wole Soyinka’s harrowing prison memoir of the same name\, chronicling 27 months of Soyinka’s incarceration without trial by the Nigerian government during the Biafran civil war in 1967. \nThe book and the film are both intensely personal. Soyinka found refuge from the brutality inflicted upon him by retreating into himself\, sometimes drifting on the frontiers of madness\, hanging on to his identity by a thread. But he also listened\, watched\, pondered\, and record “his journey of ‘motionlessness'” with scrounged paper and pencil. \nThis gathering is curated by Nathalie Handal\, global citizen\, prize-winning poet\, author of 10 award-winning books\, and Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at NYUAD. It features Wole Soyinka himself – Nobel Prize laureate\, artist-dramatist\, poet\, essayist\, musician\, philosopher\, academic\, teacher\, human rights activist\, global artist\, and scholar; the film’s director Awam Amkpa (USA/Nigeria) who is also a playwright\, actor\, theatre scholar\, curator of visual and performing arts and film festivals around the world\, and NYUAD’s Vice Provost for the Arts\, and Dean of Arts and Humanities; and Wale Ojo\, the Nigerian-British actor who took the lead role in The Man Died. \nThe evening also features the much-awarded US poet\, playwright and essayist Claudia Rankine; John Akomfrah\, the Ghanaian-born British artist\, writer\, film director\, screenwriter\, theorist and curator\, known as “one of the UK’s most pioneering film-makers [whose] poetic works have grappled with race\, identity and post-colonial attitudes for over three decades”; Yolanda Castaño from Spain\, TV presenter\, poet\, essayist\, editor\, literary critic\, painter and poet (winner of the Spanish National Award for Poetry); and Andrea Cote (Colombia)\, writer\, poet and translator (and currently a Professor of Creative Writing for the Bilingual MFA at University of Texas El Paso). \nThere’s music\, too. Anthony Joseph\, British-based Trinidad-born poet\, novelist\, academic and musician is alsways good value – he cites his main influences as calypso\, surrealism\, jazz\, the Baptist church of his grandparents\, and the rhythms of Caribbean speech. Abínibí Groovy Band is a vibrant group led by Abbey Trombone (aka Afowoslide) and given to energetic Afrocentric performances that blend indigenous and contemporary sounds for a fusion of Afrobeat\, Highlife\, and jazz (great sax player\, too). Herve Samb is a visionary Senegalese guitarist\, composer\, and arranger who has performed with an enviable playlist of artists from Jimmy Cliff to Pharoah Sanders\, Meshell Ndegeocello to Oumou Sangare\, Amadou & Mariam to the World Saxophone Quartet … He has pioneered the Jazz Sabar style\, a fusion of jazz and Senegalese rhythms Grammy-nominated drummer and bandleader Otis Brown III has also recorded and toured widely\, with the likes of Herbie Hancock\, Esperanza Spalding\, Terence Blanchard\, Robert Glasper\, and many others; most recently he collaborated with the Alvin Ailey American Dance theater for the premiere of a new work\, Finding Free. Somi (Somi Kakoma) is one of those who has worked with Otis Brown\, as it happens; she’s an American-born vocalist\, composer\, actor and playwright of Rwandan/Ugandan descent; as well as her active recording and performing career she is the founder of Salon Africana\, a boutique cultural agency and record label.

Working as a driver for a private car service in Tokyo\, French expat Jay has never been able to get custody of his daughter Lily; for nine years he has used his occupation to travel the length and breadth of Tokyo in his cab\, looking for his daughter … Just when he decides to give up and move back to France\, a chance encounter opens up the possibility that he might actually find with his daughter. \nThis screening\, which is in French with English subtitles\, is part of SUAD’s Francofilm Festival– a series of five films showing on consecutive nights between 19 and 23 April\, celebrating the French language and the diversity of Francophone cinema.

SUMMARY:Mayar Obeido: Ever in Reform
DESCRIPTION:Fann À Porter’s second solo exhibition for Syrian artist Mayar Obeido features his signature reconfigured table\, presented as an independent element for the first time in his practice\, with an accompanying series of black ink and coloured paper studies. \nWhile his previous work was embedded with themes of time\, context\, and the mutual influence of elements\, this series introduces a focus towards place\, location\, and grounding. The artist navigates a state of shifting environments and fragmentation\, where borders and limits are suddenly flexible\, reflecting the inherent tension between stability and transformation. Through his process\, Obeido found that the table progressively transformed like a frame-by-frame animated sequence\, constantly shapeshifting. SUMMARY:Abdullah Al Othman: Structural Syntax
DESCRIPTION:The Saudi artist has long been developing a highly characteristic visual language rooted in the Arabian urban landscapes\, architecture\, and linguistic history. In his work\, In his monumental installations and sculptures Al Othman reflects on the layers of history embedded in the urban fabric – especially of his native Riyadh. As the artist says\, “Every corner has its own handmade and craft details\, every street has its own story that was told without words\, but with visual and architectural symbols … Architectural and linguistic identity has always been a source of inspiration and a special passion for me. It is not just a reflection of a place but a living image of people’s history\, interactions\, dreams\, memories\, and obsessions.” \nStructural Syntax\, Al Othman’s first solo show in the UAE\, transforms the gallery into an immersive space with pieces that use this visual language to deconstruct traditional systems of meaning\, “offering works that challenge perceptions of the way we interact with the built environment\, culture\, and the spaces we inhabit”. For instance\, Untitled (Al Maktoum) references Dubai’s Al Maktoum Bridge from 1963\, one of the earliest symbols of Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum’s plans to shape a forward-thinking metropolis; Al Othman’s work suggests how infrastructure can become symbolic of a city’s evolving identity. The speed\, rhythms and restless energy of citiews like Riyadh are captured in Untitled (Light and Language)\, a metal panneau crafted from neon tubes \nSays the gallery: “Al Othman’s work reflects his broader interest in the relationship between language and form\, exploring how visual elements can act as a mean of communication\, transcending the limits of spoken or written words.
