SUMMARY:April Acts 2025: to carry new formations
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural edition of April Acts\, a weekend initiative expanding on the curatorial framework of Sharjah Biennial 16 and held across various  SB16 venues\, has the title to carry new formations – an extesion of SB16’s theme\, to carry. The April Acts programme “endeavours to build constellations of gathering and dialogue across multiple positions\, societal experiences and ongoing transitions … How can we reimagine and critically investigate our current situations or positions to construct and manifest new approaches to resistance\, reciprocity\, communal networks and life-enabling systems and structures?” \nThrough guided walks\, panel discussions\, artist talks\, participatory workshops\, film screenings and live music\, April Acts aims to create “a polyphonous space that invites multiple perspectives to co-exist and thrive”. Among the offerings are a listening session with Singing Wells; self-publishing workshops using several printing techniques such as Risograph\, including one led by Bhumika Saraswati and Siddhesh Gautam (founders of the magazine All That Blue); discussions with artists such as Brian Martin\, Yhonnie Scarce and Megan Cope; and a screening of First Horse (2024) by Awanui Simich-Pene. \nBaşak Günak\, Berke Can Özcan\, Sandy Chamun and Hauptmeier I Recker will collaborate in a performance based on their sound installation in the Biennial; Koleka Putuma will offer a performance titled WATER (reprise); and there will also be a series of performances based on the SB16 work He Kōrero Pūrākau mō te Awanui o te Motu: Story of a New Zealand river (2011). \nIt’s free\, but pre-register via this link. \n

SUMMARY:Flower Shop
DESCRIPTION:A group show – with Maria Andrievskaya\, Almendra Bertoni\, Katie Hector\, Jen Hitchings\, and John Denniston II– that invites us to think of colour not just as a visual element but as a language of its own. “Colour is what makes the world visible\, yet its perception is deeply personal. Does a vibrant burst of red or the delicate fade of blue appear the same to everyone? Or does each of us experience a slightly different reality?” The five artists “push the boundaries of how we see and feel colour”; the show’s title “was born from a fleeting yet vivid moment—passing by a florist and being struck by the explosion of hues\, an everyday spectacle that suddenly revealed itself as something more …” \nTo 17 May.

SUMMARY:Laura Garcia Karras: Eidolon
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by that French artist that explores “the spectral space between presence and absence\, giving form to what lingers just beyond perception” (the ancient Greek word ‘eidolon’ means phantom\, double\, or apparition). \nKarras’s works appear as delicate traces of something once vivid\, now fading\, like the echo of a body or the glimmer of a vanishing dream; the exhibition becomes a meditation on memory\, loss\, and the persistence of desire. As Karras writes: “We live surrounded by ghosts. Bodies fade\, but leave imprints. Desire wanes\, yet its echo remains. Artifice dazzles\, but beneath its glow\, matter disintegrates”. \nTo 17 May.

SUMMARY:World Art Dubai 2025
DESCRIPTION:World Art Dubai is back for its eleventh edition\, with more than 10\,000 artworks from 400+ galleries and individual artists who come from more than 65 different countries. WAD has grown out of its early days as a simple lo-fi affordable art fair into a bustling\, buzzy four days. It still majors on the affordable art of the title (prices from $100\, we’re told); and since there’s no jury to oversee applications\, it’s likely to be variable in quality. But then that’s all part of the vibe …  There’s a full schedule of extras like live painting\, talks\, demos\, workshops\, and more: check out the programme here. \nWAD is open 1pm to 9pm. As well as the one-day one-adult ticket at AED 30 and a four-day pass for AED 50\, there’s reduced-price entry for kids aged 12-18 and family tickets at AED 60 (two adults one child) and AED 70 (two adults\, two children). All of these represent a modest but noticeable increase on 2024 prices …

SUMMARY:Thomas Lélu: Calm Down It’s Just Art
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Lélu’s practice interweaves photography\, installation art\, and textual elements\, frequently featuring the appropriation and recontextualisation of imagery from popular culture and media to interrogate themes of contemporary society\, consumerism\, and media representation. His methodology of exploration\, archiving\, and contextualization positions the French artist as “one of the archaeologists of our present epoch”\, as the gallery puts it. To 14 June.

SUMMARY:Katia and Marielle Labèque
DESCRIPTION:We’re promised “an original and innovative musical programme” from the Labèque sisters\, and they never disappoint. Noted for their impeccable synchronicity\, electrifying energy\, and deftness of interpretation\, the sisters “have transformed the piano duo” (New York Times) and “their musical line always sounds as if it’s being woven for the very first time” (The Times). For this Abu Dhabi Festival recital\, the programme begins and ends with music from two Philip Glass opera inspired by Jean Cocteau – La Belle et la Bête and Les Enfants Terribles – which bookend Ravel’s Ma Mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) piano duet.

SUMMARY:Diamanti: dir Ferzan Özpetek (2024)
DESCRIPTION:A dazzling film set in n 1970s Rome in a dressmaking atelier for film and theatre. The atelier is directed by two very different sisters\, one determined and slightly despotic\, the other more fragile and tormented. An important order comes in for a huge film set in the eighteenth century: the costume designer is an Oscar winner\, the director is equally demanding. The dressmakers get to work; they don’t have much time\, but plenty to contend with\, including a rivalry between two prima donnas who should be prevented from crossing paths when trying on their costumes. And each of the dressmakers has their own problems at home too … \nThere’s a little bit of everything in the film: humour and drama\, sisterhood and competition\, grave losses\, loves that might have been\, secret relationships. The outfits are dazzling\, and the sets and lighting do them justice. The result is a genuine crowd-pleaser\, deploying a big cast of well-known Italian actresses (18\, in all) and set in its entirety in this most glamorous of locales. \nThe film is in Italian\, with English subtitles. It screens in the NAAS: She Reel series\, which is labelled ‘Women in Society: Stories That Inspire\, Change That Empowers’ and features films that are dedicated to highlighting women’s stories and raising awareness about the realities and roles of women in our lives. \nHighly recommended.

DESCRIPTION:A clever juxtaposition of works by two masters of the poetry of balance and movement that reveals unexpected harmonies between the artistic languages of Alexander Calder and Philippe Hiquily. Calder’s gouaches on paper\, with their bold colours and rhythmic compositions\, provide a visual counterpoint to Hiquily’s sculptural explorations of balance\, weightlessness\, and abstraction. These works\, essential to Calder’s creative process\, exhibit the same principles that animate his mobiles\, two of which are included in this exhibition – New Old Universe (1953)\, an elegant example of his ‘constellations’\, and Caged Stone on Yellow Stalk (1966)\, a rare standing mobile. With these works are four of Hiquily’s Girouette mobiles\, each representing a different season. \nTo 4 May. \nAbove left: Alexander Calder\, Bunny Eared Horse (1971). SUMMARY:Asunción Molinos Gordo: The Peasant\, the Scholar and the Engineer
DESCRIPTION:Asunción Molinos Gordo’s second major collaboration with Art Jameel – following her 2019 Artist’s Garden\, In Transit (Botany of a Journey) – is her first retrospective exhibition in West Asia. This show spans 15 years of Molinos Gordo’s work\, tracing her journey from foundational artwork on food systems and agriculture in Egypt and the Arab world to recent investigations of Arab and Muslim heritage in her native Spain. \nCentral to her work is the concept of pensamiento campesino (peasant knowledge)—the accumulated wisdom and expertise of small farmers over centuries\, often overlooked by agronomic science and prevailing notions of progress. Molinos Gordo aims to reclaim this knowledge to foster more sustainable relationships with land\, resources\, and social harmony. For the artist\, this perspective is vital to achieving food sovereignty\, sustainability and the long-term stability of the global food supply. \nThe exhibition brings together key works that defined Molinos Gordo’s engagement with histories of food production and agriculture. They include the 2015 Sharjah Biennial Prize winner WAM (World Agriculture Museum) (2010). Emblematic of the latest developments of her practice\, Como solíamos (As we used to) (2020) is a large-scale rammed-earth installation that evokes the vernacular irrigation systems of Al-Andalus and reflects on the transformations of agricultural land over time. \nTo 21 September.

SUMMARY:Morteza Khazaie: Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:Khazaie’s solo show is inspired by nature\, particularly by trees that bend in the face of wind and storms yet do not break. These symbolise resilience and flexibility; just as in life\, people too change under pressure and harsh conditions\, being guided towards new paths. The artist’s craftsmanship and thoughtful use of wood create pieces that are both grounded and transformative\, resonating with the themes of survival\, adaptation\, and silent strength. As curator Farshad Mahoutforoush writes; “Trees that yield in storms\, yet continue to grow\, became a metaphor for how we as humans navigate change. This exhibition is my reflection on the ways we adapt\, redirect\, and find new shapes for ourselves under pressure … Through these works\, I wanted to explore how softness can be strength\, and how being ‘upside down’ might simply mean seeing things differently”. \nTo 15 September.

DESCRIPTION:A solo show for an artist whose distinctive approach to visual storytelling lies in her ability to blend hyperrealism with dreamlike distortion. In this series\, a follow-on from her gorgeous but unsettling La La Land works\, her paintings transform the sea into a metaphor for modern existence where joy and anxiety coexist\, and spectacle conceals fragility\, turning the ocean into a theatrical\, disorienting place filled with bioluminescent creatures\, clown-like figures\, and confetti-like bubbles; every detail serves as a fragment of a larger\, immersive universe where beauty and unease intertwine – and where despite the chaos there is a space to pause\, reflect\, and immerse in a universe that resists simplification. \nTo 15 September.

SUMMARY:Hassan Sharif: The Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Murtaza Vali\, this exhibition revisits Hassan Sharif’s ‘objects’\, works which expand the definition of ‘craft’ beyond notions of skill\, precision and medium-specific mastery and towards “an experimental\, experiential and embodied practice of learning\, understanding\, and knowing through making”. \nIts title references a 1936 essay by German philosopher and cultural critic Walter Benjamin which laments the eclipse of the art of storytelling in the modern era and posits a unique relationship between craft and storytelling – the craftsperson\, primarily preoccupied with their hands but free to listen\, provides the storyteller with a captive audience: the storyteller’s tales would help allay the tedium of repetitive action that serves as the foundation of much craft practice. \nSharif’s ‘objects’ exemplify this combination of storytelling and craft\, of narrativity and materiality. Although they obviously owe much to the Duchampian readymade\, they are undeniably handcrafted and the products of mundane manual tasks – cutting\, folding\, rolling\, twisting\, knotting\, tying\, plaiting\, weaving\, binding\, gluing\, wrapping. These actions produce small units which are then simply piled\, stacked\, bundled\, or strung together and hung to create a larger form. The artist himself explained: “Despite the fact that my works are based on a sequential\, industrial mode of creativity\, they also demolish the sequential autonomy of an industrial product.” \nThis exhibition emphasizes materiality\, manufacture\, and form through careful groupings and juxtapositions\, pairing exhibited ‘objects’ with texts that present an account of their crafting and perception. Sharif famously characterised himself as a “single work artist\,” unifying his diverse oeuvre under one conceptual premise. The Storyteller” will attempt to trace some of the myriad material and formal complexities that are otherwise masked by this provocation\, presenting a fragmented biography and (art) history of Sharif through thee works. \nTo 7 June.

DESCRIPTION:Al Braithwaite is a contemporary artist from London who works across a variety of disciplines including sculpture\, assemblage\, found material and installation. For this show\, Braithwaite’s Material Abstraction (MATAB) comprises textured panels arrayed as physical sculptures. Says the gallery: “Their weight and conceptual terrain is contained within a language where flatness of form and potency of industrial energy is paramount … The artist asks questions by intersectioning materials: what happens when this touches that\, when one idea divides another\, when this angle reaches for another angle\, or when that thing becomes empowered as an abstract entity?” To 22 May

DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the Middle East for the Addis Ababa artist showcases Sime’s distinctive practice of transforming colourful wires\, circuit boards\, and electronic components into intricate\, layered compositions that blur the boundaries between technology\, nature\, and abstraction. \nThe title ‘Through The Window’ speaks to both literal and metaphorical apertures that frame perception\, whether through architecture or digital screens. SUMMARY:Sama Alshaibi: طرس (Tterss)
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of recent body work by one of the gallery’s stars. Alshaibi’s multimedia work explores spaces of conflict and the power struggles that reimagine Baghdad’s transformation – its peaks\, declines\, and latent possibilities. Baghdad becomes a site of physical presence and alternative visions – one that is “always mediated\, annotated\, and glimpsed through shifting thresholds” as Alshaibi puts it. \nAfter 40 years\, Alshaibi returned to her homeland several times between 2021 and 2023. To reorient herself with a city she had once known more through imagination than lived experience\, she constructs an abstracted and interrupted history and reality; the Arabic title evokes the idea of a palimpsest\, a concept Alshaibi explores through the superimposed strata of imagery within her collages that immerse the city’s ruins and infrastructures into a deeper narrative of alienation. LiDAR data mapping is interwoven with photographs and archival materials to create a speculative space for understanding historical Arab cities as microcosms of broader global crises\, where past and present collide \nTo 30 May. \nAbove: Sama Alshaibi\, Duplicates (2024)

SUMMARY:Michael Sailstorfer: Air Electric
DESCRIPTION:Sailstorfer’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery brings together three series of works that explore one of the artist’s signature themes: energy. He reflects on energy as a source\, as storage\, as a transmitter\, as working material – in short\, as fuel for life. \nThe sculptural series C-Batterie plays with notions of classical sculpture such as eternity\, uniqueness and preconceived values. At first glance\, the five bronze casts on white pedestals seem to fulfil these ideas: but is this really the case? Referencing Joseph Beuys’ Capri-Batterie (1985)\, Sailstorfer creates wax models of the original Capri battery\, places them in beehives\, leaves the bees to work on them for a few months\, and then removes the moulds to cast bronzes from them. The results feels as if nature has taken over\, destabilising and questioning the so-called balance while capturing the transience and the creative energy of the moment. \nAnother set of casts made from ordinary lightbulbs\, using the same process\, are suspended from the ceiling with reference to their original function. \nSailstorfer’s latest series – Air Electric\, from which the exhibition takes its title – turns electricity into his painting medium. A power supply unit provides a constant flow of direct current that ‘paints’ silver on to copper mesh; the result is an abstract\, electric landscape of pale blue cloud formations against a golden sky. Occasionally\, certain\nshapes can be made out through the web of clouds\, but the interpretation of the work is ultimately left to\nthe viewer. \nThe final work in the exhibition is an addition to Sailstorfer’s Tank series (2020 on). Tank 11 (2024\, above) consists of an empty Audi fuel tank\, deprived of its original function and context; the tank takes on anthropomorphic features\, reminiscent of oceanic masks from a bygone era. The sound of breathing fills the last part of the room\, reminding us that energy in any given form is always fuel for life. \nTo 23 May.
