The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. DESCRIPTION:Nadine Ghandour’s first solo exhibition in the UAE\, curated by Dawn Ross\, features recent works informed by her experiences in various cities\, including Dubai\, Sharjah\, Cairo and Rotterdam. Working with drawing\, writing\, performance and sculpture\, Ghandour creates works that depict imagined (and often farcical) situations set within cities\, exploring the impact of rapid urban development on those environments. “The fast-forward city gives rise to characters who are chronically uncertain”\, says the gallery\, “navigating and coexisting within these fragile architectures\, while constantly teetering on the brink of change or collapse”. \nTo 18 May.

DESCRIPTION:Born in 1980 in a nomadic Tuareg encampment just outside Agadez in Niger\, Bombino (born Goumour Almoctar\, also known as Oumara Moctar) came of age during much political upheaval\, fleeing with his family to Algeria by 1990\, and teaching himself guitar by watching videos of Jimi Hendrix\, Dire Straits\, Ali Farka Toure and Tinariwen. His performances showcase evocative rhythms\, captivating vocals\, and awe-inspiring guitar playing that led the New York Times calling him “the Sultan of Shred”. The first-ever artist from Niger to receive a Grammy nomination (Best World Music Album in 2018)\, Bombino manages to fuse traditional Berber rhythms with stunning rock n roll and songs about peace in the Sahel. A rare chance to see a rare talent.

DESCRIPTION:The second solo show at this gallery for the Egyptian artist\, featuring new works with themes of memory\, nostalgia\, and childhood. Inspired by ancient Egyptian and Coptic art\, Boraey heavily depends on metaphors\, “taking his audience on a dramatic journey filled with poetic nuances to coax them into new territory beyond their comfort zones” as the gallery puts it. \nThe artist himself says the inspiration came from his father’s library: “In my journey from childhood to maturity\, I was affected and dreamed a lot of another distant land to live in. There is nothing in it but a rock\, a horse\, a tree and a lake. A pure\, simple dream. Here\, in some of these paintings\, I tried to convey my childhood dream in paintings that carry many of the feelings of Hady the child\, whose life took him far from his home in the Delta. DESCRIPTION:Jesse Eisenberg wrote\, directed and stars in this whip-sharp comedy of two Jewish American cousins touring Poland in honour of their grandmother. The fun comes from the verbal sparring between uptight\, neurotic David (Eisenberg) and his outgoing\, unpredictable cousin Benji (Kieran Culkin)\, but it’s also a substantial and emotionally nourishing character study – and the final shot of the film is absolutely devastating. A BAFTA Award winner\, and tipped for an Oscar too. Very highly recommended.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the historic Dubai neighbourhood of Freej Al Murar (on the Deira side of Dubai Creek) as a living archive of artistry\, community\, and resilience. In this research project\, Sharjah-based Mobius Design Studio – led by Hadeyeh Badri\, Hala Al-Ani\, and Riem Ibrahim – has explored the layered histories and vibrant culture of Freej Al Murar. \nAt its core\, the project acknowledges the erasure driven by capitalism\, where the beauty of traditional garments often overshadows the labour and stories of their makers. The project began with an exploration of the mkhawera\, the traditional embroidered garment of Emirati women; this work pays homage to the artisans who are often excluded from the narrative. \nThe exhibition features an installation of nine addas (embroidery stretchers) with embroidered personal narratives by artisans\, a short film by Abdulla Majjan\, and a publication with essays that explore the neighbourhood’s significance. \nTo 11 March.

DESCRIPTION:A classical music concert for families with children the combines storytelling with live performance of the pieces by Vivaldi\, Bach\, Mozart and Tchaikovsky to explore the composer’s palette of emotions. It’s performed by the Baldaquin Ensemble\, featuring cellist Petr Gladysh\, a three-time prizewinner at the Karl Davydov International Competition and winner of the European Music Competition Paolo Serrao in Italy. The quartet also includes violists Anna Larionova-Gladysh\, Sergei Belozertsev\, and Daria Kuchenova. \nWe’re not sure if the quoted AED 250 ticket price is for a family or individuals\, or where the cut-off is for free child access: best check with the box office.

The cast features a mix of some of the city’s top actors plus recent Sharjah Performing Arts Academy graduates ”and exciting new faces”.
