SUMMARY:Boogie Box x Warehouse Party
DESCRIPTION:Boogie Box has scheduled another of its superlative back-to-the-best-of-yesterday nights – yep\, a six-hour warehouse rave in an actual warehouse. It’s another of the Box’s leftfield venue finds\, this one The Hangar at JA The Resort\, which is actually an industrial space used as a workshop for boats (there’s a mini marina by the hotel). So the high ceiling\, unglitzy finishing and rough edges should help deliver the full warehouse rave experience. \nExpect a premium sound system\, enhanced lighting and visuals\, art installations and decor inspired by the 90s. Headliners are Anthea\, “one of the most charismatic selectors on and off the decks”; and the prolific German house/techno producer (and magpie favourite) Isolée. Also on the wheels of steel / Ableton-and-Macbooks are Kyle Bower and hometown hero Nasrawi. \nTake glowsticks and expect to bop till past 3am. We’re citing the basic door price on the night but there are bargains for early bird purchases and premium deals for extras. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dina El Wedidi | Samora Pinderhughes
DESCRIPTION:The rich melodic culture of Egyptian music from Dina El Wedidi is set alongside the harmonically sophisticated sounds of American jazz mixed with RnB and post-rock by Samora Pinderhughes. It’s an intimate\, cross-boundary double bill\, the first of two this weekend that\, as The Arts Center’s Executive Artistic Director Bill Bragin put it\, “continues The Arts Center’s tradition of highlighting visionary artists whose work defies easy categorisation”. \nEl Wedidi last performed at The Arts Center in its inaugural 2015-2016 season as part of the Nile Project. Her innovative approach has earned her a significant reputation on the regional and global stage; her music is influenced by Egyptian folk music and Arab poetry\, resonating with the beauty of cultural diversity. The show features a selection of songs from her previous albums and new singles\, presenting her as both a singer and music composer and showcasing different chapters in her remarkable career. \nSamora Pinderhughes is a pianist\, vocalist\, and composer who commits himself to making art in his everyday life. Through honest lyrics and harmonic language\, his work delves into the things society tries to hide – its history\, its structures\, the individual\, and the daily things we all experience but don’t know how to talk about. With a musical style that cuts across multiple genres\, his performance is an invitation for the audience to express themselves and their inner thoughts by feeling things deeply and focusing on how we all live. \nThere will be a night souk as well\, with 40 retail vendors offering locally made artisan products\, including handmade soaps\, candles\, local artwork\, jewellery\, home décor\, and pottery. And if you want to take the second concert in this weekend series as well\, there’s a two-day pass available at AED 155. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Les Enfants Perdus: dir Michèle Jacob (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Four young siblings find themselves abandoned in a house in the woods in Belgian writer-director Michèle Jacob’s creepily atmospheric suspense thriller. For much of its running time\, The Lost Children has the ominous atmosphere of a slow-burn horror film; “the forest doesn’t want us to leave and the house is haunted” as one of the children says.  Things aren’t quite as clear-cut as this implies\, though\, one review descries the film as having a David Lynch vibe. But it’s engaging\, is occasionally illuminated by flashes of dark wit\, does eventually come to a conclusion\, and doesn’t take too long to reach it … \nThis film in a short Francophone season (with English subtitles) at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi – shows in the Sorbonne’s rather nice outdoor garden. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:March Meeting 2024
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual convening of artists\, curators\, scholars and arts practitioners from around the world to discuss issues in contemporary art focuses this time on collectives whose practice intertwines artmaking and community building in various forms of collaboration that advance social justice. \nThrough talks\, roundtable discussions\, lectures\, workshops\, performances and more\, MM 2024 invites participants to radically reimagine more inclusive\, equitable\, sustainable and liveable futures. It will examine collaborative methods and modalities that both reappraise artistic\, curatorial and activist approaches and reconfigure the role of art and artists in our current lived realities. It also considers alternative forms of coming together\, such as learning platforms\, activist movements\, correspondences or publishing\, which can serve as toolkits for social justice\, solidarity and political mobilisation. \n

SUMMARY:Katya Muromtseva: Over the Slopes of Speech
DESCRIPTION:The New-York based artist gets her first show in the UAE\, featuring works she created in Dubai during her time at the NIKA Project Space Research and Residency programme – monumental watercolour triptychs that relate to the narratives and histories of women immigrants. Muromtseva is known for her socially engaged practice and large-scale paintings\, videos\, and installations that refer to personal and collective memory; these works are based on interactions the artist had with immigrants\, both in the USA and during a month-long visit to the UAE as part of the residency. The resulting watercolours aim to capture the resilience of these women and delve into themes of home\, borders\, refugees\, and human destinies. \nTo 4 May. \nAbove: Katya Muromtseva\, To Gulbana (2023)

SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its policy of attracting established blue-chip touring performances\, Dubai Opera is running Broadway Entertainment Group’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical for a three-week run. \nThe story is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of a musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of the young soprano Christine\, the Phantom grooms her as his protégé – but that doesn’t go too well\, and his obsession sets the scene for a dramatic collision of jealousy\, madness and passion. \nThe show\, which celebrated 37 years last October\, has won over 70 major theatre awards – it’s Lloyd-Webber’s most successful – and reportedly has been seen by more than 160 million people worldwide; now it’s our turn … There are performances between 22 February and 10 March (not Mondays)\, with shows at 8pm on weekdays and 2pm and 8pm on Saturdays\, 2pm and 7.30pm on the Sundays. Tickets look a tad pricey\, but this is a lavish production with a big cast and a 2h45m run time that could well justify the cost. \n  \n  \n  \n

\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Flavio Lucchini: Hair
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of 23 works by the Italian art director/publisher of high fashion magazines. They’re highly graphic in style\, with bold lines and strong colours\, and as the title implies they consider women through the hair\, the only precise detail in a face without features. Says the artist: “These are not portraits. They are memories of emotions  … At my age\, I take pleasure in seeing life full of hope. The faces that come to mind I see as flowers in a garden or in the fields. All beautiful\, all different. They don’t have features but colours. They sway in the wind\, gaze into the eyes of the future\, and are recognised by detail …” \nTo 31 March. \nAbove: Flavio Lucchini\, Lola from the Hair series (2023)

SUMMARY:Jamal Bassiouni: The World of Mirrors
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the noted Egyptian artist’s vivid and poignant paintings exploring ancient Egyptian beliefs regarding enlightenment and the afterlife. As the artist puts it: “In The world of Mirrors we say what is above is what is below\, a soul to heaven and a body to earth. A journey starts as the sun sets inside of us and we are to receive the resurrection while we live. A process of pain and suffering to happiness and pleasure. Never forget that the words are\nnot the reality\, only reality is the reality; pictures\, symbols\, lines that cut through time\, without a beginning and without an end”. \nTo 15 April. \nAbove: Jamal Bassiouni\, Flowers of The Blacksea (2024)

SUMMARY:Pieter Obels and Hermann Nitsch: Momentous Convergence
DESCRIPTION:You wouldn’t normally put these two artists together; but the gallery describes this show as “a platform that showcases a compelling dialogue between their distinct artistic visions”\, one that “celebrates abstract and profound concepts while highlighting the intriguing harmony between the artists despite their distinct stylistic approaches”. \nPieter Obels (b.1968) transforms steel into sculptures that defy its inherent rigidity\, creating light\, graceful pieces with organic shapes. Here he presents a collection inspired by the beauty of Dubai. “When you look at my sculptures you start to follow the lines; ‘Where do I begin and where do I go.’ It’s like travelling\, finding new roads\, walking unknown paths. For me\, showing my sculptures in Dubai feels the same. A new place to explore and meet. It’s a great adventure that starts in my studio and brings me new unknown encounters. I follow.” \nThe art of Hermann Nitsch (1938-2022)\, rooted in Expressionism and religious symbolism\, aims to be more intense and provocative. His art\, especially through the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries series\, aimed to engage all senses\, often incorporating intense and provocative elements such as flesh and blood to explore themes of tragedy and passion. \nTo 15 March. \nAbove: (left) Pieter Obels\, No One Else in Mind (2023) – (right) Hermann Nitsch\, KK_15_13 (2013) \n

SUMMARY:Trevor Noah: Off the Record
DESCRIPTION:Trevor Noah’s current world tour called in at Dubai last October\, and now another UAE date has been added. Noted for his sharp wit and intelligent commentary on people\, politics\, racism and nationalism\, and occasionally himself\, he’s also good at the downright silly stuff too; the Guardian summarised his last UK show with “Noah is a master of classic standup and has mass appeal in the best possible way”. SUMMARY:Simple Minds: Global Tour 2024
DESCRIPTION:This eight-month-long Simple Minds tour genuinely is global (they started in January in New Zealand: Dubai is a stop between Australasia and Europe) and they expect to play to over one million people worldwide\, showcase their eighteenth studio album Direction of the Heart along with some of their classic hits. The setlist for past shows on the tour has a dozen songs\, many of them seriously long\, climaxing (of course) with Don’t You (Forget About Me). \nThe nucleus of Simple Minds remains Jim Kerr (vocals) and Charlie Burchill (guitars and other instruments)\, who have been together since their short-lived late 70s punk incarnation as Johnny & The Self-Abusers. Now they tour with a full band\, including Ged Grimes (bass)\, Cherisse Osei (drums)\, Gordy Goudie (guitar and keyboards)\, Erik Ljunggren (keyboards)\, and Sarah Brown on backing vocals. \nFun fact: Simple Minds took their name from a David Bowie lyric – “He’s so simple-minded\, he can’t drive his module” from Jean Genie. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Alserkal Lates
DESCRIPTION:Alserkal Lates takes place in the middle of Alserkal Art Week\, so there should be more than two dozen exhibitions in Avenue galleries open till 10pm (half of them taking the opportunity to open on the night) – with the chance to see art but also to chat with curators\, artists and artsworld movers ‘n’ shakers. There will be scheduled artist- and curator-led tours of some of the exhibitions\, too\, which is always going to be interesting. \nAlso opening is This is Not Your Grave\, a new commission by Dima Srouji that marks the return of Alserkal’s programme of public art commissions for 2024. This edition is curated by the American art historian and gallery curator Zoé Whitley under the umbrella title ‘Walk With Me’; apparently she was particularly struck by Alserkal Avenue’s accessibility and cultural and experiential offerings for audiences on foot rather than by car; the 2024-25 commissions will be “ambitious new works whose expressive modes make concepts physically palpable\, immediately relatable and widely accessible. Dima Srouji will lead a guided tour of This is Not Your Grave at 11.30am on 28 February. \nWhitley has also curated the Majlis Talks programme\, running from 4pm under the umbrella title Let the beauty we love be what we do. She’s taking part in one of the sessions with Dima Srouji; there’s also Mandy El-Sayegh in conversation with Sara Raza\, Abbas Akhavan\, Salima Hashmi\, and Graciela Magnoni. The event will conclude with a lecture performance by Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Tappeser. \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Faisal Samra: Immortal Moment II – Coping with the Shock
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition with the second body of work from Faisal Samra’s Immortal Moment project\, artworks created through the accumulation of instances that push the viewer to question the opportunities of a single moment. In the first chapter of this project\, Faisal describes the technique as an expression of emotions; for the current show he defines the outcome as a shock; the exhibition will reveal the process of Coping with the Shock. \n“The dialogue between the abstract and figurative\, conceptually or formalistically\, is essential to Faisal’s work. Time\, being one of the most abstract ideas\, becomes figurative when Faisal visually notes down specific points in time through the use of charcoal and paint. The result is formalistically abstract\, but the final creation becomes figurative through several interventions\, which represent a culmination of temporal instances.” \nTo 15 April. \nAbove: Faisal Samra\, PSF-P2 (2023) \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Two of the most distinctive Dubai-based artists with works that explore the intricate relationship between labour\, rest\, and the ever-evolving urban landscape of the UAE. “Considering the dynamics of human existence\, alternating between cycles of depletion and restoration\, the exhibition highlights the vital role of rest in the perpetual movement of cities\,” says the gallery. “Rest challenges societal norms that discourage rest\, aiming to disrupt the prevailing narrative and explore possibilities on the other side of exhaustion …” To 15 April. \nAbove: Vikram Divecha\, Resting Bodies (Island No.4) (2024)
