SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Golden Ink: A Journey through Arab and Islamic Manuscripts
DESCRIPTION:This flagship travelling exhibition\, run in collaboration with McGill University\, Canada\, is a great chance to explore the richness\, inherent beauty\, and global impact of the heritage of Arabic and Islamic manuscripts. \nThe exhibition promises an exploration of the intellectual and artistic legacy of the Islamic world\, assembling a rare selection of manuscripts across disciplines such as science\, literature\, religion\, art\, and philosophy. \nThis should be a significant exhibition. Treasures from the Abu Dhabi Libraries’ collection will be shown alongside notable contributions from McGill University\, Zayed National Museum\, Louvre Abu Dhabi\, and some UAE private collections. Visitors can expect immersive displays\, digital interactives\, and a public programme including hands-on workshops; there will also be a richly illustrated exhibition catalogue\, which should become a collectors’ item. \nThe exhibition itself is free to visit\, but general admission to the palace is AED 65.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdulqader Al Rais: Al Nayed
DESCRIPTION:A retrospective for one of the artists who have played a central role in shaping the UAE’s modern visual identity\, featuring work from a career spanning more than five decades. Bridging heritage and modernity with authority\, Al Rais’s paintings draw deeply on Emirati heritage\, Islamic culture\, and the interplay between the UAE’s natural landscapes and architecture. As the gallery puts it\, “Al Nayed captures the cultural transformation of the UAE without nostalgia”. \nThe exhibition include rare works from the artist’s private collection and a selection of previously unseen new work\, but also draws substantially from five of the artist’s best known series – Alghaf\, inspired by the ghaf tree\, a national symbol of the UAE; Calligraphy (Hurufiyya)\, where Arabic letters function as visual and spiritual forms; Impressionism\, early depictions of UAE landscapes rendered with soft\, atmospheric brushstrokes; Alhaa\, a distinctive series of watercolours on paper; and Abstract\, which combines geometric elements with landscape compositions. \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s popular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sarah McEneaney: Creative Non-Fiction
DESCRIPTION:For nearly five decades\, Sarah McEneaney has devoted her practice to a singular theme\, the meticulous chronicling of her own life. This exhibition presents a series of paintings that chart the latest moments and milestones in a life – domestic interiors\, intimate self-portraits\, her studios\, her animals\, her neighbourhoods\, travels\, and community spaces. “I like to think that I’m describing a life that other people can enter into\, with their own stories\,” she says.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE John Dilg: Found and Lost
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa-based artist John Dilg represents scenic panoramas as earth-toned paintings that feel immediately familiar yet poignantly dreamlike. Having specialised in abstraction early in his career\, Dilg’s evolution towards landscape painting retained an especial awareness of spatial relationships – “a consciousness of the physical and allusory [sic] weight of forms and structures\,” as the gallery puts it. “His landscapes transcend scenery\, becoming a lexicon of objects\, each powerfully charged with memory and meaning. Dilg’s paintings are wonderfully contemplative spaces\, where solitude and recognition coexist\, evoking our shared longing for meaning within nature’s vastness …”

SUMMARY:Shezad Dawood: Skin of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Shezad Dawood’s 25-year career spans painting\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, film\, performance and digital media. Fascinated by ecologies and architecture\, his work connects art\, science\, music\, environmentalism and technology to explore both alternative histories and futures\, through a process of continuous world-building expressed as an explosion of colour and multi-layered narratives; and that should make this first mid-career retrospective of the artist a must-visit. The exhibition\, which is curated by Jessica Cerasi\, features more than 40 works including painting\, sculpture\, monumental film installations\, and interactive virtual reality experiences – with more artworks being introduced gradually during the exhibition’s run\, which should repay multiple visits (it’s on till mid-September). Running alongside is a series of workshops on the themes of the exhibition. \nTo 20 September. \nAbove: Shezad Dawood\, Anselm Chapel\, Tokyo (2016)

SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. SUMMARY:Classical masterpieces by Firdaus Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Does what it says in the title – Expo City’s excellent all-female orchestra tackles some classical favourites. From the promo: “from sweeping symphonies to iconic overtures\, this concert pays tribute to legendary composers whose works have shaped the history of music … the programme invites you on a journey through the elegance\, drama\, and passion of classical music presented in their signature style that blends tradition with fresh\, modern artistry”. \nThe programme certainly lives up to the promise in the name: \nVivaldi ‘Summer’ from The Four Seasons\nBrahms Symphony No.3 (Third Movement)\nJ S Bach Toccata & Fugue in D minor\nDvořak Symphony No.9 (Fourth Movement)\nMozart Symphony No.40 (First Movement)\nMahler Symphony No.5 (Fourth Movement)\nStravinsky The Rite of Spring\nBeethoven No.7 (Second Movement) \nLooks like great value at a modest AED 75.

SUMMARY:Tim Orr: This Scene Was About
DESCRIPTION:Noted US improviser Tim Orr (founder of SF’s Improv Playhouse\, duo shows with Inbal Lori\, leading roles in Bay Area plays and improvised feature films\, performer and teacher at numerous festivals and/or as an invited guest artist) brings the improv performance technique that celebrates connection\, emotion and ensemble storytelling to Dubai. Originally created in Bogotá\, Colombia in 2017 by Italian improviser Favio Maccioni\, the format grew out of an intensive workshop exploring the ideas of emotional mirroring and reading scenes as a gift; scenes unfold in ways that are sometimes obvious and sometimes surprising\, inviting audiences into unexpected connections\, emotional depth and moments of shared discovery. \nIt’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website) – it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat.

SUMMARY:Short+Sweet Dubai
DESCRIPTION:One of two 10-minute play festivals running concurrently in Dubai on six successive weekends with a basically similar format. This one is probably the more familiar name; it’s been running in Dubai for some years\, latterly as a franchise but now under direct control from the Short +Sweet organisation (the principle of a festival of 10-minute plays is common enough\, but S+S has put a lot of effort and experience into the format\, the rules\, the judging criteria\, and everything else you need for a successful event). Each of the S+S Dubai weekends (9-10 May is a break) features afternoon and evening sessions for 10 plays\, meaning you could see something around 80 microplays if you attended all weekend performances up to 16-17 May – the best return to compete for the top prizes on the Gala Weekend\, 23-24 May. \nTimes\, dates\, prices: \n3.00-5.00pm 18 April AED 100\n7.30-9.30pm 18 April AED 120\n3.00-5.00pm 19 April AED 100\n7.30-9.30pm 19 April AED 120\n3.00-5.00pm 25 April AED 100\n7.30-9.30pm 25 April AED 120\n3.00-5.00pm 26 April AED 100\n7.30-9.30pm 25 April AED 120\n3.00-5.00pm 2 May AED 100\n7.30-9.30pm 2 May AED 120\n3.00-5.00pm 3 May AED 100\n7.30-9.30pm 3 May AED 120\n3.00-5.00pm 16 May AED 150 People’s Choice Semi-Final 1\n7.30-9.30pm 16 May AED 150 People’s Choice Semi-Final 2\n3.00-5.00pm 17 May AED 150 Judge’s Choice Semi-Final 1\n7.30-9.30pm 17 May AED 150 Judge’s Choice Semi-Final 2\n

SUMMARY:Anthony Akinbola: Get Well Soon
DESCRIPTION:Durags are stretchable fabrics worn over the head to shape and protect the hair; in Akinbola’s practice\, they are both culturally loaded objects and a material he can reconfigure. For this solo show\, Akinbola assembles durags into compositions that are drawn from the structure of classical floral still-life paintings. Translating this genre into fabric allows the image to form through construction; petals emerge through stitching\, density\, and layering. The flower is not painted; it is built. \nAlongside the floral arrangements\, Akinbola works through another motif: bricks. Says the gallery: “The brick pattern … introduces a different register: a wall\, a structure\, a longing. It gestures toward the search for something that lasts\, and toward the idea of home as legacy … The title Get Well Soon operates as both a cue and a condition\, an everyday phrase that carries hope and uncertainty at once”. \nThe exhibition also includes two installations that mark real time – a bouquet of helium balloons that deflate slowly over the course of the exhibition\, and a diffuser that releases a fragrance created by Akinbola to fill the space temporarily and then dissipate. \nTo 24 May. \nAbove: Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola\, Arrangements #001 (Montgomery) (2026)

SUMMARY:Unfixed ground
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition that approaches ‘ground’ as “something continuously produced: fractured\, inscribed\, and held in tension between erasure and persistence …” \nThe first of two spaces has works by Mandy El Sayegh\, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim\, Omar El Gurg\, and Rand Abdul Jabbar – painting\, sculpture\, and material assemblage that make visible the processes of layering\, repetition\, and transformation: Says the gallery: “Grids loosen into dense surfaces where language and gesture intersect\, while symbolic forms develop through accumulation and return. Elsewhere\, sculptural bodies appear suspended between terrain and figure\, suggesting ground as something both physical and imagined … Rather than resolving into fixed meanings\, these works hold multiple temporalities at once … The space becomes one of ongoing construction\, where meaning is contingent and continuously negotiated …” \nThe second space is quieter and more contemplative\, featuring works by Asad Faulwell and Dima Srouji where cycles of repetition and rupture unfold through painting and material fragments. Faulwell’s works have recurring gestures and figures\, “tracing forms of endurance that move between ritual and resistance”; Srouji’s practice introduces light and fragility through fractured elements without restoring them to wholeness. \nAcross both spaces\, “Unfixed Ground … reflects on how ground—whether material\, political\, or symbolic—is continually made and remade. In this context\, instability becomes generative: a condition through which forms are shaped\, undone\, and sustained”. \nTo 9 May. \nAbove: Rand Abdul Jabbar\, Earthly Wonders\, Celestial Beings (2019 – ongoing)

SUMMARY:Samar Hejazi: In Circulation
DESCRIPTION:For her first solo exhibition in the UAE\, curated by Nadine Khoury\, Samar Hejazi presents a body of work that explores how forms shift\, unravel\, and reassemble over time. Working across textile\, printmaking\, and spatial intervention\, her practice suggests that meaning is something continuously in flux; the exhibition unfolds through a series of open-ended questions around stability\, resilience\, and transformation. “Hejazi’s works carry traces of memory and labour\, where making becomes inseparable from thinking\, and material itself operates as a system of knowledge …” \nTo 30 June.

SUMMARY:All the Lands from Sunrise to Sunset
DESCRIPTION:“All the lands from sunrise to sunset”\, a phrase attributed to the Mesopotamian king Sargon of Akkad\, graphically invoked his claim to total dominion. Taking this assertion as both point of departure and provocation\, this exhibition includes works by Alla Abdunabi\, Fatma Al Ali\, Alessandro Balteo-Yazbeck (whose series of the same name provides the exhibition’s title) and Michael Rakowitz. Together they consider the persistence of imperialism through language\, image\, material\, and myth. \nSays the gallery: “Rather than presenting empire as a concluded historical form\, the exhibition treats it as an ongoing condition – one that mutates\, rebrands\, and embeds itself in contemporary visual culture … Across these practices\, the exhibition resists singular narratives. Instead\, it stages overlapping temporalities in which ancient empires\, colonial enterprises\, and contemporary geopolitical formations mirror and refract one another … Rather than offering resolution\, the exhibition invites sustained attention to the ways power endures\, adapts\, and continues to structure how the world is seen\, remembered\, and lived.” \nTo 1 June. \nAbove: Alessandro Balteo-Yazbeck\, #FosilFuel (2018\, detail. From the series All the Lands from Sunrise to Sunset)
