SUMMARY:Kamran Samimi: Before Nature (I Am Both Created and Destroyed)
DESCRIPTION:Kamran Samimi’s first exhibition with The Third Line draws inspiration from the land’s rich tapestry of natural materials. Delving into the concealed narratives of the UAE’s mountainous terrain\, Samimi’s practice is deeply rooted in a profound sense of place. As he explores the dynamics between human and non-human ancestors\, his multicultural identity (Iranian/Norwegian\, raised in rural Hawai’i) lends a distinctive perspective to unravelling these connections and conflicts. \nSamimi has harnessed the organic shapes of the UAE’s mountains and rocks for his Translations series. Alongside the paintings is a large stone sculpture titled Unbroken Column to be displayed outdoors in Alserkal Avenue. \nTo 16 February. \nAbove: Kamran Samimi\, Meditation on Rain III (2023) \n

SUMMARY:Ishmael Randall Weeks: Desert Displacements
DESCRIPTION:The second solo exhibition at Lawrie Shabibi for the always interesting Peruvian artist who characteristically transforms fundamental geometric models into objects echoing the poetry of utility. Each of the works “weaves through the domains of architecture and design\, anchoring themselves within social and spiritual contexts from both Peruvian and Arab cultures”. To 9 February. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Being Borrowed: On Egyptian Migration to the Gulf
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring 21 Egyptian artists and curated by Farah Hallaba\, Farida Youssef\, and Ali Zaaray. It’s the result of an collaboration that was first presented in Cairo in 2022 and brings the authors of this project together with research by NYUAD faculty Laure Assaf on second-generation Arab migrants in Abu Dhabi. \nBeing Borrowed is part of a larger aim to produce accessible knowledge that invites people to question and to feel. Migration and its effects – on families\, affects\, homes – is a widely shared experience; there is much to gain by opening the doors of knowledge production beyond academia\, and inviting the public to take part in this process. \nThis project is funded by the NYUAD Arts and Humanities Research Kitchen Al Mashhad initiative. To 7 February.

SUMMARY:The Fridge Open Mic Night
DESCRIPTION:Ten-minute performance slots at The Fridge’s well-equipped Alserkal Avenue warehouse venue. It’s first-come first-served\, but we’d expect some judicious balancing (if you’re up for it\, here’s the online registration form); the gig starts at 7pm\, so by our reckoning that’s at least 18-20 performers. The form invites bands\, solo signers\, spoken word artists and generic ‘performers’ to put themselves forward … We think it’s free to both performers and consumers. \n

SUMMARY:Khatia Buniatishvili
DESCRIPTION:An evening with one of the contemporary stars of the piano. Garlanded with accolades yet still only in her mid 30s\, Khatia Buniatishvili brings passion and vulnerability to her performances; she acknowledges that the folk music of native Georgia has greatly influenced her musicality\, and that is probably reflected in her warm\, sometimes sorrowful playing. “The piano is the blackest instrument\,” she says\, a “symbol of musical solitude”\, which even a pianist must become accustomed to. “I have to be psychologically strong and forget the hall if I want to share it with the audience.” \nHer recital should bring out the best in her\, from the melancholy lyricism of the Satie to a virtuoso climax in the energetic toe-tapping rhythms of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No.2. \nThis is a rare and highly recommended opportunity. And she’ll be playing the Dubai Opera Edition by Steinway & Sons\, one of the piano maker’s exclusive productions for specific international concert halls. The Dubai version for instance gets Arabesque patterning on the inner lid\, a music desk that echoes the traditional shape of dhows\, and legs and prop stick that draw inspiration “from the whirling sand dunes of Dubai” (not entirely sure where you’ll find those). \nProgramme: \n\n\n\nSatie Gymnopédie No.1\nChopin Prelude in E Minor op. 28 no. 4\nChopin Scherzo No.3 in C-sharp Minor\nBach ‘Air on the G String’ from Orchestral Suite No.3 in D Major (transcr. Buniatishvili)\nSchubert Serenade from Franz’s Schwanengesang (transcr. Liszt)\nChopin Polonaise in A-flat Major op. 53\nChopin Mazurka in A Minor op. 17 no.4\nCouperin ‘Les baricades mistérieuses’ from Sixième ordre: Second Livre de pièces de clavecin\nBach Prelude and Fugue in A Minor (transcr. Liszt)\nLiszt Consolation No.3 in D-flat Major\nLiszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 in C-sharp Minor (transcr. Horowitz)\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Unveiling the Shadows of the Past: J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije – the hidden icon of photography in Africa
DESCRIPTION:The first gallery show to be dedicated to the work of the noted Ghanaian photographer’s seminal works\, telling the story of Ghanaian modern history through the lens of a local and one which captures the nation in the throes of British colonial rule yet on the cusp of independence. As the gallery note says\, “The power behind Bruce-Vanderpuije’s images lies in the pride and determination of each sitter captured during a period in which two worlds merge into one: Ghanaian traditional heritage and western style modernity”. \nCurated by Ethiopian photographer Aida Muluneh\, the show will have more than two dozen previously unseen black-and-white images by Bruce-Vanderpuije\, depicting life in Ghana in the 1920s and 30s and offering insight into the formation of an independent\, 20th-century Ghanaian social and political identity. \nTo 20 February. \nThe opening evening (12 January\, 6.30-8pm) features a discussion between curator Aïda Muluneh and J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije’s granddaughter Kate Tamakloe covering the photograph’s career and the importance of archiving and photography on the African continent from the 1920s to the present day. \nAbove: J.K. SUMMARY:Tubular Bells
DESCRIPTION:Your chance to remind yourself what the fuss was all about: it’s the 50th anniversary of Mike Oldfield’s masterpiece mashup of classical\, jazz\, folk\, prog rock\, and electronica – the highest-selling instrumental album of all time. This special tribute concert will feature a full band with conducting and arrangements by Oldfield’s long-term collaborator\, Robin Smith. (Oldfield himself won’t be there; his label says he’s retired\, and notwithstanding his enthusiasm for Donald Trump and Brexit he’s chosen to live in the Bahamas since 2009.) \n

SUMMARY:Ahmad Kasha: A Moment of Peace
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the young Syrian painter. “Those who follow Kasha’s experience will notice his transition from expressive realism shortly after his graduation from the College of Fine Arts to expressionism\, which tends toward abstraction in a fluid experimentation that attempts to get rid of the customs and traditions that constitute the painting composed by the Syrian professional in general. Colours ignite and fade\, get dirty and wash away\, falling here and there unintentionally or intentionally\, left to say what they say. Behold the voice of this experience muttering in our eyes and lips of this young soul of animals of blood and fire …” \nTo 17 February. \nAbove: Ahmad Kasha\, Untitled (2023) \n

SUMMARY:Berlin: Perhaps All the Dragon
DESCRIPTION:An interesting take on the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory – the idea that all people are no more than six social connections away from each other. In an intimate setting\, spectators are seated at a large oval table\, each facing a single screen. Seemingly ordinary people appear on their screens\, each narrating an unusual but true story in a filmed monologue – a philosophic proposition\, a scientific detail or an anecdote. The themes brought up in these stories are eclectic; together\, they balance on the edge of believability. \nThere are performances at 8.30pm on these dates: \n\n13 Jan (English)\n14 Jan (English)\n19 Jan (Arabic)\n20 Jan (English)\n21 Jan Jan (English)\n26 Jan (Arabic)\n27 Jan (English)\n28 Jan (English)\n2 Feb (Arabic)\n3 Feb (English)\n4 Feb (English)\n\nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October 2023 to February 2024\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh.

SUMMARY:Thirty Days in September
DESCRIPTION:Mahesh Dattani’s play\, a critical and commercial success for the noted Indian playwright\, was first performed in 2001 but retains a contemporary relevance. Two of Dubai better theatre groups\, Third Half Theatre and EnAct\, are collaborating on this potentially difficult play that deals with dark family secrets recalled through impermanent memories and what the producers term “the fantasies we propagate to render the truth palatable”. \nThis is tough stuff\, touching on multi-generational incest and the subjugation of women\, and it should stretch the actors: Rashmi Kotriwala\, who takes one of the key roles as well as producing\, says “this has been\, by far\, my most challenging role as it has pushed me to explore uncharted territory … There cannot be a neutral reaction to this story\, and it will definitely move each person in some way”. It’s a shame it’s only getting a single performance … \nSanjeev Dixit directs. \n  \n

SUMMARY:(No) Body is Translating
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel is running a third season of Night School\, a seminar programme where UAE residents can discuss urbanism and history in Dubai. Under this season’s theme\, There You Are\, participants will assess how much we can know about a place just by taking a good look around. The seminar itself is fully booked\, but there are three public events in Art Jameel’s lobby; this is one of them. \nAbu Dhabi-based writer Deepak Unnikrishnan will present the opening chapter to his first literary/artistic project in seven years\, Pettee. The lecture will focus on the role of the moving body in Gulf spaces as a translating device and sound machine\, and why he is convinced we must pay attention to community elders with Gulf roots: to document how they move/sound\, not only write what they say/remember. The project will continue in the spring with a dance and sonic collaboration at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi. \n

SUMMARY:Tao Ye: 4
DESCRIPTION:Tao Ye’s choreographic works explore the potential of the human body beyond the limitations of representation or dramaturgical narrative.  In this performance piece\, the choreography is abstract – four fluid bodies flow in powerfully controlled movements around a magnetic central point\, relentlessly performing a fixed pattern of movements as if seeking to achieve oneness. The central point keeps them together\, but they cannot breach the distance between them. Minimal shifts in movement are masterfully built in throughout the performance\, drawing the audience into a slowly growing trance. \nPostponed from its original 7 January date in solidarity with the situation in Gaza\, this is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October to February\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n

SUMMARY:Hatshepsut: The Woman Who Would Be King
DESCRIPTION:Actually\, she was king (sort of). This “groundbreaking immersive show” covers the life of Hatshepsut (c. 1507–1458 BCE)\, the fifth Pharaoh of Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty – ruling first as regent to her stepson Thutmose III\, then as queen regnant. She dressed and behaved much like a man in order to keep the court and the priests on side (hence presumably the reference to ‘king’). Famously her reign was a period of great prosperity and peace\, and of major building (like the Karnak Temple Complex and her own Mortuary Temple at Deir el-Bahari). After her death most of her images were destroyed and references to her erased; ain’t that always the way? \nSo there should be lots of material for this show\, which features 270-degree wall and floor projections and the promise that “you’ll be transported to the heart of the empire\, experiencing the customs\, beliefs\, and traditions that shaped Hatshepsut’s rule … in a captivating and unforgettable experience”. \nThe show lasts about 30 minutes and there are slots throughout the day between 10am and 8.30pm from 15 January to 18 February. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hamilton: An American Musical
DESCRIPTION:The multi award winning musical is making its Middle Eastern debut for an extended run at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena (to 11 February). Lin-Manuel Miranda’s book\, music and lyrics have created something of a revolutionary moment in theatre – it’s a musical that has genuinely had a profound impact on culture\, politics and education. It’s probably one of those opportunities that should grab if you can\, if only to check out whether the hype is justified … \nHamilton is a sung-and-rapped-through biography of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution; Miranda has described Hamilton as about “America then\, as told by America now”. \nWeekday performances are at 8pm (not Mondays) with prices from AED 180; weekends carry a price premium (seats from AED 240!) with two performances a day on most Saturdays and Sundays. Here’s the summary: \nWed 17 Jan 8pm\nThu 18 Jan 8pm\nFri 19 Jan 8pm\nSat 20 Jan 2pm\nSat 20 Jan 8pm\nSun 21 Jan 5pm\nMon 22 Jan NO SHOW\nTue 23 Jan 8pm\nWed 24 Jan 8pm\nThu 25 Jan 8pm\nFri 26 Jan 8pm\nSat 27 Jan 2pm\nSat 27 Jan 8pm\nSun 28 Jan 1pm\nSun 28 Jan 6.30pm\nMon 29 Jan NO SHOW\nTue 30 Jan 8pm\nWed 31 Jan 8pm\nThu 1 Feb 8pm\nFri 2 Feb 8pm\nSat 3 Feb 2pm\nSat 3 Feb 8pm\nSun 4 Feb 1pm\nSun 4 Feb 6.30pm\nMon 5 Feb NO SHOW\nTue 6 Feb NO SHOW\nWed 7 Feb 8pm\nThu 8 Feb 8pm\nFri 9 Feb 8pm\nSat 10 Feb 2pm\nSat 10 Feb 8pm\nSun 11 Feb 1pm\nSun 11 Feb 6.30pm\n

SUMMARY:Sheher\, Prakriti\, Devi
DESCRIPTION:Riffing on the interwoven relationship between cities\, the natural environment and the sacred\, this show presents work by 12 artists and collectives working across diverse contexts of urban\, rural\, domestic\, communitarian\, public and non-material spaces. \nSheher\, Prakriti\, Devi comes from the Hindustani terms for ‘city’\, ‘nature’ and ‘deity’. The exhibition germinates from curator Gauri Gill’s own ongoing documentation of urban and semi-urban spaces in India; viewers are invited to regard ecology as an overlap of cultural\, natural and spiritual domains – a world where built and natural structures are rendered porous by termites\, gates open to unfinished roads\, historical ruins become homes to migratory birds while pigeons become occupants of post-colonial houses\, locusts bear witness to contemporary terrors and forests manifest as spirit sisters. \nIn this show are works by Chamba Rumal\, Chiara Camoni\, Gauri Gill\, Ladhki Devi\, Mariam Suhail\, Meera Mukherjee\, Mrinalini Mukherjee\, Rashmi Kaleka\, Shefalee Jain\, Sukanya Ghosh\, Vinnie Gill and Yoshiko Crow. \nTo 1 June. \nAbove: Chamba Rumal\, Tara. SUMMARY:Ludovico Einaudi
DESCRIPTION:After sold-out performances at Dubai Opera in 2018\, 2019\, and 2023\, the Italian composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi – one of the best-selling classical artists of all time – is back in Dubai for a three-night stint. \nBorn in Turin\, he trained at the Milan Conservatorio\, studied under Luciano Berio\, and worked as an assistant to Karlheinz Stockhausen for a while. He started out composing fairly traditional chamber and orchestral music before turning his hand to film music\, writing scores for films\, including This is England and I’m Still Here; but he hit stardom with his solo albums\, many of the pieces from them have become famous as stand-alone songs – like Nuvole Bianche\, currently clocking well over 14 million streams. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHe performs again on 20 and 21 January. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Essia Jaïbi: Metamorphoses #2
DESCRIPTION:In this performance piece\, Essia Jaïbi revisits the memories seared into her mind since childhood – she locks her mother\, Jalila Baccar\, in the glass-walled dressing room of an imagined theatre and pressures her to address the audience. Devised as a confrontation between two generations\, the performance tackles art\, theatre and cultural activism that evolve into a critique of Tunisia’s political\, cultural\, economic\, environmental and healthcare systems as well as the rights of minorities and people with disabilities. \nOriginally scheduled for last October but postponed in solidarity with the situation in Gaza\, there are now performances (in Arabic with English and French subtitles) on 19\, 20\, and 22 January – all start at 8.30pm and last around 40 minutes. This is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October to February\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
