DESCRIPTION:Sim Chi Yen’s installation and performance speaks to the intersecting geographies of forced migration that came about as a result of the mass deportation of over 30\,000 people from British-ruled Malaya (present-day Malaysia and Singapore) to China between 1948 and 1960. Situating us within the fluid space of the sea\, the script shifts between a homage to Etel Adnan’s To Be In A Time Of War and a letter to her paternal grandfather\, who was exiled to China\, where he was executed shortly after arrival. Left behind in Malaya\, his mother\, wife and five children never speak of him. Sim’s decade-long project works to undo this erasure within her family and society. Taking on many roles – artist\, historical researcher\, granddaughter\, niece\, daughter\, mother – Sim Chi Yin guides the audience through her research of forced migration practices from colonial to contemporary times. \nThis is part of the fifth edition of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s season of curated performances that serve as an engaging space for exploring\, remembering and imagining – “treating the body as a site of artistic inquiry\, the programme shifts fluidly between intimate reflection and collective experience”.

DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by Malaysian artist and designer that reflects on the quiet\, temporary musollas that pop up in the UAE’s warehouses\, shopfronts\, and back rooms\, modest prayer spaces that are shaped by necessity rather than formal design. Through paintings\, drawings\, and maquettes\, Sharum examines how fleeting environments can create belonging\, stillness\, and connection among strangers joined by faith in the city. As he says\, “Relocating to Dubai made me feel like an outsider\, but discovering a small cabin-like musolla tucked within a transient site during my early days provided an unexpected sense of familiarity\, softening my feelings of displacement”. \nBy lifting these spaces out of their functional settings\, says the gallery\, “Sharum invites viewers to look closely at details that are often overlooked. DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of Sharjah Art Foundation’s open-call photography exhibition examines the evolving possibilities of documentary photography through newly commissioned works by six artists – Luisa Dörr\, Latifa AlBokhari\, Sathish Kumar\, Adam Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Maheder Haileselassie. \nThe principle is that photography is not simply as a tool for recording reality but can be treated as a medium through which histories and systems of representation are negotiated. So through portraiture and observational strategies\, Dörr\, AlBokhari and Kumar probe the nuances of lived experience\, tracing intimate connections between land and belonging via long-term collaborations with individuals\, families and communities; Rouhana\, Guanyu Xu and Haileselassie explore themes of absence and rupture\, photography as a means of grappling with questions of visibility and with histories interrupted by conflict or erasure. As SAF puts it: “The works position documentary photography as a field in transformation – one defined not by static truths\, but by continual discernment”.

DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Lipscomb’s 2021 book draws on a recently opened archives and extensive correspondence and interviews with those who knew them best to tell the story of four lifelong friends who met at university and made their mark in a male-dominated world. It’s inimical to summarise their philosophical views in a sentence\, but maybe you could say they argued for the objectivity of ethics\, that it possible to live a good life based on courage\, discernment and justice (as opposed to being merely an inert values-free body waiting to be pushed in one direction or another). Some have argued that Lipscomb flattened the philosophical debate in favour of drawing four fascinating real-life people; but it’s still a great read … A good book club choice. \n

As Kholief puts it: “Here\, the diasporic imagination is reclaimed\, illuminating the possibilities of shared movement—literal and metaphorical\, exploring how it affects artistic method. Fellow Travellers is a parcel\, a constitutive act of worlding\, of dreaming …” \nFellow Travellers brings landmark and rarely seen works from five artists into dialogue with Kholeif’s own paintings; painting is seen as a connective thread through which diasporic histories\, oral traditions\, symbolic languages and forms of ancestral knowledge can be recovered and reimagined.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition born out of the question: how will this time be remembered and who will tell the stories of the people who live here? It’s one of the outcomes of Kutubna’s initiative Documenting Culture in the Gulf in a Time of War\, an oral history project centring the experiences of diverse people living in the Khaleej. More than 40 artists and other contributors from different generations and cultural backgrounds are showing 70 works\, including journals\, poems\, short stories and publications\, embroidery\, crochet\, collage\, paintings\, digital works and photographs; their contributions speak of resilience\, protection\, unity\, faith\, gratitude\, and hope\, while also reflecting moments of fear and uncertainty and a deeper connection to home.
