SUMMARY:Beyond the Book Club: Sense and Sensibility
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon dedicated to Jane Austen’s novel of love\, family\, heartbreak\, and societal expectations (which of course you could say about most of her novels. Maybe not Northanger Abbey …) This sort-of book club with tea and good conversation will revisit the Dashwood’s milieu to investigate whether Austen’s sharp observations about love and human nature still ring true today (and maybe whether the recent film was as good as Ang Lee’s). “Whether you’re a lifelong Austen admirer or discovering her work for the first time\, join fellow book lovers for an afternoon celebrating the enduring charm\, wit\, and wisdom of Sense and Sensibility …”

SUMMARY:Reynier Llanes: Elsewhere\, Within
DESCRIPTION:Reynier Llanes’ second solo exhibition at Firetti Contemporary includes works from The Tourist and The Poet series plus the debut of Bodega\, a new series in which the human figure gives way to transparent vessels overflowing with flowers. “Moving between the real and imagined\, the exhibition explores how places\, people and experiences shape who we become and what we carry forward …  Across Elsewhere\, Within\, boundaries between figure and landscape\, past and present\, and the lived and imagined remain fluid. The worlds we pass through never entirely disappear; something of them remains within us”. \nTo 16 January.

SUMMARY:The Days Go On: 20 Years of Ayyam Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This is sure to be one of the shows of the year\, and not just because of its scale. Ayyam’s 20th-anniversary exhibition seeks to honour a journey defined by continuity\, resilience\, and artistic exchange\, says the gallery; and\, “much like the gallery’s programming\, the exhibition is conceived as a visceral experience\, a story that has withstood the test of time …” \nAlongside co-curators Safwan Dahoul and Ali Kaaf\, director Maya Samawi aims to bring together works by all the artists who have shaped Ayyam over the past twenty years. Each of the curators represents a continuous artistic timeline in which the past and present remain undeniably connected; “Ayyam’s twenty years are not merely a measure of time. They constitute a living history – one that continues to unfold”. \nThe exhibition will feature works by an extraordinary roster of contemporary Middle Eastern artists: \n2006:\nYoussef Abdelke\nSafwan Dahoul\nMounzer Kamnakache\nFadi Yazigi\nAbdullah Murad \n2007:\nAssad Arabi\nNassouh Zaghlouleh\nMouneer Al Shaarani\nWalid El Masri\nKais Salman\nNihad Al Turk\nMouteea Murad\nMohannad Orabi\nOmran Younes\nAbdul Karim Majdal Al-Beik \n2008:\nAmmar Al-Beik\nAsma Fayoumi\nSamia Halaby\nTammam Azzam\nLeila Nseir\nMoustafa Fathi \n2009:\nOthman Moussa\nOussama Diab\nKhaled Takreti\nThaier Helal\nNadim Karam \n2010:\nRima Salamoun\nElias Izoli \n2011:\nSadik Kwaish Alfraji\nMohamad Badr\nLara Zankoul\nLara Attallah \n2012:\nAmmar Abd Rabbo \n2013:\nFarzad Kohan Mousawi\nAfshin Pirhashemi\nFaisal Samra\nAbdulnasser Gharem \n2014:\nFathallah Zamroud\nShurooq Amin\nMohammad Bozorgi \n2015:\nSama Alshaibi\nNoor Bahjat \n2016:\nRula Halawani\nKhaled Jarrar\nRashed Al Shashai \n2017:\nRoshanak Aminelahi\nAbdalla Al Omari \n2018:\nRashid Al Khalifa \n2022:\nMuatasim Alkubaisy \n2024:\nKhaled Akil \n2025:\nAthar Jaber\nAli Kaaf \nTo 1 January.

SUMMARY:Faris Alshafar: Everybody Changes Underwater
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition by Emirati artist Faris Alshafar features new oil paintings that mark his move from monochrome into colour. Says the gallery: “The works explore how we alter our appearance and behaviour in response to desire and expectation\, whether internally cultivated or externally imposed. Palettes thaw from glacial to nautical to terrestrial before vaporising into placeless places. Forms are hung like marionettes across load-bearing negative spaces\, held or erased by forces unseen\, while glyph-like gestures evocative of shells\, clock hands and candles recur from one painting to the next …Drawing on music\, video games and everyday moments in which people change how they act and look\, the paintings unfold like episodes\, each with its own pictorial logic”. \nImage: Faris Alshafar\, Chocolate (2026\, detail)

SUMMARY:Yaw Owusu: Where the Tide Flows\, and the Dunes Gather
DESCRIPTION:The Ghanain artist’s second solo exhibition with Efie Gallery extends Owusu’s longstanding exploration of value\, currency\, and the social structures through which worth is assigned and perceived; it features textured canvases\, mixed media sculptures\, and – for the first time in his practice – works on paper. \nWorking with materials already embedded within systems of exchange\, Owusu considers currency as more than an economic instrument\, approaching it as a social language through which hierarchies of worth are constructed and maintained. Through accumulation\, repetition\, and transformation\, materials assigned little individual value take on an imposing presence\, challenging the assumptions that determine what is considered precious. \nTo 10 January.

SUMMARY:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd: As I Bask in Your Light\, it Seeps to My Soul
DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s second solo exhibition marks a significant evolution in his practice\, says the gallery – “one in which desire and divinity are intertwined and rendered in quiet persistence”. Previous works often situated their subjects within expansive landscapes\, imbued with a mythological presence; this time the figures shift throughout domestic interiors and intimate encounters\, all the while becoming increasingly human; “they are no longer vessels for projection alone but subjects encountered in their own right”. \nTo 5 January. \nImage: Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd\, Bather basked in moonlight (2026\, detail)

SUMMARY:The Territory Dreams Back
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of newly commissioned and recent works by Rajni Perera\, Sancintya Mohini Simpson\, Soma Surovi Jannat\, Karan Shrestha and Rain Wu – five artists whose work offers different perspectives on our relationship with place. \nThe exhibition moves between mythology and memory\, migration and ecology\,political power and the systems through which places are mapped and organised. Says the gallery: “At its heart is the idea that places are shaped by more than their physical geography – land and water hold histories and memories; stories and beliefs influence how landscapes are understood; political decisions affect who can access and control land; and maps and infrastructure can change the environments they set out to describe”. \nTo 15 January. \nImage: Rajni Perera. SUMMARY:Marilina Marchica and Salmah Almansoori: Traces of Home
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that brings together works by the Italian artist Marilina Marchica and Emirati artist Salmah Almansoori that are rooted in the landscapes respectively of Sicily and Ghayathi. \nMarchica traces the imprints of abandoned buildings and domestic spaces through drawing\, collage and painting\, using materials such as earth\, charcoal and mineral pigments. Almansoori draws on her personal archive of Ghayathi\, transforming photographs and collected materials\, including palm fibres and desert grasses\, into new works. Between them they explore how art can preserve the memories and histories held by a place\, and how a sense of belonging endures through change … \nTo 29 November. The exhibition is curated by Maria Firetti and organised by Firetti Contemporary in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Abu Dhabi. \nImage: Salmah Almansoori\, Witnessing the Fragments (2026\, section)

SUMMARY:The Speculative Circle: 100 Ways of Spilling the Beans
DESCRIPTION:Led by Viviana Checchia\, this participatory studio invites participants to explore how everyday acts of gathering\, cooking\, and conversation can become spaces for collective thinking\, exchange\, and connection – and for expressing ideas\, sharing experiences\, and challenging established social structures. \nInspired by Dr. Checchia’s memories of women gathering to cook and exchange stories in southern Italy\, the seminar considers how domestic spaces and shared activities have enabled women to articulate perspectives and exchange ideas that might otherwise remain unspoken. The session will include a visit to the Mina Zayed fruit and vegetable market to source seasonal ingredients\, followed by a collective cooking session centered on a recipe developed by local chef and artist Moza Al Matrooshi. \n

SUMMARY:NOMAD Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:The fair for upmarket collectible design\, contemporary art\, jewellery and crafts returns to the iconic decommissioned Terminal 1 of the old Abu Dhabi Airport with more than 50 exhibitors and a much expanded programme. \n“This year\, we have a better understanding of this remarkable building so we can be more ambitious with it” says NOMAD’s co-founder and director Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte. As well as the commercial offerings\, there’s an expanded institutional programme for nonprofit initiatives\, cultural projects and institutions from the UAE and beyond – among them including Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council\, Design Commission Abu Dhabi (DCAD)\, and House of Artisans in collaboration with the Institut du Monde Arabe. There’s also a programme of talks and workshops presented by BGRE (formerly Brookfield Properties). \nThe fair will be open 19-22 November (plus 18 November for a VIP invitation-only preview) at 1pm to 9pm (8pm on the last day).

SUMMARY:Frieze Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:Building on nearly two decades of Abu Dhabi Art\, the inaugural edition of Frieze Abu Dhabi marks a new chapter for the region’s international art scene. The aim is to connect Abu Dhabi and local arts ecosystem with Frieze’s global network of galleries\, artists and collectors; the more immediate concern will of course be the incipient conflict in the Gulf\, but at time of writing the fair is going ahead with much optimism and enthusiasm. \nSo what’s changed from the last Abu Dhabi Art in November 2025? Some obvious elements are retained – the fair’s location\, the involvement of DCT Abu Dhabi\, the presence of Dyala Nusseibeh as fair director. But there are also some significant points of difference\, quite apart from the scale of the fair itself (Abu Dhabi Art’s final edition had more than 140 galleries\, Frieze has 80 or so). \nFrieze describes the exhibitors for its first Abu Dhabi edition as a “tightly selected group” who have been given with larger stands and a more generous layout intended to encourage “sustained engagement”. \nThere’s a solid base of top UAE galleries – Carbon 12\, Lawrie Shabibi\, The Third Line\, Tabari Artspace\, Iris Projects\, Gallery Isabelle\, Green Art Gallery among others – with some of the big names from Saudi Arabia (Athr\, Hafez) and Lebanon (Saleh Barakat\, Mark Hachem\, Galerie Tanit). \nFrieze’s international reach is presumably responsible for the strong showing from London – among them Thaddaeus Ropac\, Richard Saltoun\, Timothy Taylor\, Victoria Miro\, Vigo Gallery\, Voena and Waddington Custot – alongside a smattering of European galleries. There’s also some blue-chip New York names: Gagosian\, Pace\, Vito Schnabel and Leila Heller (the only one of that cohort to have a UAE outpost). \nThe other commercial section is Focus\, a long-standing Frieze feature for younger international galleries showing experimental solo or dual presentations. Frieze Abu Dhabi is offering bursaries for each gallery in this section to encourage them to show locally. For 2026 it’s a modest group of just six galleries . \nThe fair will also have two curated sections. Frieze Masters Abu Dhabi is curated by Marika Sardar\, an art historian and curator whose expertise focuses on the historical networks of the Indian Ocean. That shapes the content of Frieze Masters Abu Dhabi\, which we’re told will present “exceptional objects and artefacts from West Asia and beyond\, spanning Antiquity through to the early 20th century … shaped around the theme of the Indian Ocean\, encompassing the historic movement of objects\, people and ideas through trade\, collecting and cultural exchange”. \nAnd the more contemporary equivalent is Global Futures\, a series of gallery presentations for solo artists whose practices engage with histories and ideas that resonate across the UAE and the wider region – “bringing together artists from distinct cultural contexts\, the section will trace connections across place\, material and lived experience\, situating their work within the broader regional and international dialogues that Frieze Abu Dhabi seeks to foster”. \nThe scale of the curated element is rather different to Abu Dhabi Art’s last programme. The predecessor fair seemed to feel it had a remit to promote and document the local art scene: so we had the Pavilion Prize for student designers\, the Beyond commissions for new works by emergent UAE-based artists (which in the past had travelled internationally after the fair)\, the guest-curated Gateway programme of installations\, a performance programme\, and site-specific projects around Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. \nAnd Abu Dhabi Art had no door charge; previous versions did have an entrance charge but last year was free with online registration\, whereas Frieze Abu Dhabi will be charging a very specific AED 57.75 per day for general admission (AED 236.25 for a three-day pass). \nThe overall impression is that Abu Dhabi Art had wider aspirations and probably less measurable KPIs. Frieze Abu Dhabi is more specific in its goals\, a commercial art fair that seeks to contribute to Abu Dhabi’s soft-power positioning as a high-end cultural destination. In short\, Frieze Abu Dhabi seems to be going for less volume and more quality: certainly the curated programming sets a high bar. \nThe inaugural Frieze Abu Dhabi Artist Award is curated by Nabila Abdel Nabi\, Senior Curator for International Art at Tate and head of the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational\, who selected the Lebanese (London-based) artist Dala Nasser as its recipient. \nThe award will support a new commission\, Nasser’s ambitious site-responsive work Qubbat Duris; this takes its name from a 13th-century monument in the Bekaa Valley\, a structure which reflects the transcultural history of the region. Nasser’s installation offers a reflection on the ways materials carry memory over generations\, and on a collective responsibility towards landscapes facing destruction. \nIn Dialogue is a new annual flagship exhibition. Dirwaza Curatorial Lab has titled this one ‘At Another Meeting Point’ and paired works by Mohammed Kazem and Alia Zaal\, “opening up new perspectives and unexpected points of connection across generations”. This sounds promising. \nFrieze Sculpture Abu Dhabi is a nod to the London-based parent\, with works from Zeinab Alhashemi\, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim\, Imran Qureshi\, and Kamran Samimi. \nTimings: \n19 November (Invitation only) 2pm – 9pm\n20 November 2pm – 9pm\n21 November 2pm – 9pm\n22 November 2pm – 9pm \nEntry to the fair is date- and time-specific\, with no re-entry for one-day general admission tickets. \nImage: Mohammed Joha\, No Shelter 01 (2026). SUMMARY:UAE National Orchestra: Sing for the Nation
DESCRIPTION:This concert by the UAE National Orchestra and choir puts the emphasis on ‘national’ with “an evening where we come together in love for the nation\, sharing moments of pride and belonging … a space where we gather as sons and daughters of this homeland – citizens and residents alike”. \nThe programme includes melodies from the 1970s to the present that have accompanied national celebrations and defined moments in the country’s history; this time\, students from the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge’s (ADEK) Nabati Poetry initiative will join the Orchestra and Choir on stage. Nabati poetry\, the vernacular verse of the Arabian Peninsula\, has carried the history and identity of the Emirates across generations. \nIn Al Ain the Orchestra performs in the open air at Al Jahili Fort\, a fitting setting for an evening of the nation’s songs in a place that carries the heritage of the Emirates. \nThis is one stop on a tour that in total takes in four emirates – Fujairah (28 November) and RAK (1 December) to come.

SUMMARY:Sim Chi Yin: Longings\, Returns
DESCRIPTION:Sim Chi Yen’s installation and performance speaks to the intersecting geographies of forced migration that came about as a result of the mass deportation of over 30\,000 people from British-ruled Malaya (present-day Malaysia and Singapore) to China between 1948 and 1960. Situating us within the fluid space of the sea\, the script shifts between a homage to Etel Adnan’s To Be In A Time Of War and a letter to her paternal grandfather\, who was exiled to China\, where he was executed shortly after arrival. Left behind in Malaya\, his mother\, wife and five children never speak of him. Sim’s decade-long project works to undo this erasure within her family and society. Taking on many roles – artist\, historical researcher\, granddaughter\, niece\, daughter\, mother – Sim Chi Yin guides the audience through her research of forced migration practices from colonial to contemporary times. \nThis is part of the fifth edition of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s season of curated performances that serve as an engaging space for exploring\, remembering and imagining – “treating the body as a site of artistic inquiry\, the programme shifts fluidly between intimate reflection and collective experience”.

SUMMARY:CLOSING TODAY Wafa Al Falahi: Feathers in the Reeds\, Milk in the Mud
DESCRIPTION:The Emirati artist’s first solo exhibition features an imaginary bestiary on paintings\, works on paper and ceramic sculptures. Al Falahi’s creatures each carry a feeling\, a memory or a premonition\, says the gallery: “Pieced together from what has stayed with the artist after moving through a place\, recomposed through memory\, childhood and fantasy\, they emerge from papier mâché\, pastel and pigment\, raised in thick relief on the canvas\, before stepping\, in clay\, into the space of the gallery … Al Falahi’s fables carry no fixed morals: beauty sits alongside violence\, innocence alongside desire\, and their meaning stays open\, as it does in a dream”.

SUMMARY:Verapat Sitipol: Stream of the Forest
DESCRIPTION:The Thai painter Verapat Sitipol explores the relationship between abstraction and the natural world in this body of work; the exhibition considers how we experience nature as something in flux\, continuously shaped by movement\, memory\, and time. Sitipol’s compositions are articulated through stratified colour\, gestural inflections\, and subtle tonal modulations\, “conjuring fragments of forest\, terrain\, and light without anchoring them to a fixed geography … What emerges instead are environments that feel fluid and open – spaces shaped as much by perception and memory as by physical reality”. \nTo 9 December. \nImage: Verapat Sitipol\, Night in Red Sky (2025)
