SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Fariba Boroufar: In Our Bones
DESCRIPTION:Fariba Boroufar’s first exhibition at the gallery features her signature woven forms. Reminiscent of elements of the built environment\, they offer a poetical portrait of our broken present\, a protest against forgetting\, and a paean to another way of moving through the world.

SUMMARY:Men’s Rings: the Yves Gastou Collection
DESCRIPTION:The late dealer / collector Yves Gastou (he passed away in 2020) was known for his educated eye\, eclectic tastes\, and an ability to discover lost gems and new talents in art\, design\, jewellery and exquisite taste generally. From an early age Gastou had been fascinated by 18th-century antiques but he also acquired specialities in Art Nouveau and Art Deco\, Venetian glass\, and most recently 20th century designer furniture – especially Ettore Sottsass and Italian design of the 70s generally. But he never confined himself to a particular period: as one commentator noted\, “he was too curious\, and saw beauty in objects that others dismissed”. \nBeyond his work as a gallerist and the position as a design-world tastemaker\, though\, Gastou’s most defining idiosyncrasy was an insatiable fascination with men’s rings. He amassed a highly eclectic collection of better than a thousand\, ranging from rings worn by ancient Egyptians to those sported by members of the Hells Angels. \nThis exhibition features more than 700 of the best examples from Gastou’s collection. These rings range across myriad functions\, from wedding oaths to mystical amulets via statements of membership and confirmation of identity to a simple (or complex) willingness to delight the eye. \nThe exhibition is organised into five themes to allow an immersive exploration of the collector’s personal taste: History\, Gothic\, Christian Mysticism\, Vanitas and Eclecticism. Each tells a story\, reflecting the collector’s unique personality but also echoing the original wearer’s own emotions\, ambitions and memories – there’s a powerful connection between the object and its owner in these pieces. \nThe exhibition had a very successful debut in Paris in 2018\, then travelled on to Tokyo and Hong Kong in 2022 and Shanghai in 2023.  New rings have been added to the selection for its fifth iteration in Dubai\, where it opens to coincide with the 10th edition of Dubai Design Week. It runs Tuesday to Saturday\, 10am to 7pm\, to 26 April. \nL’ÉCOLE Middle East is holding a Public Open Day on Saturday 9 November\, with course demonstrations\, kids workshops\, guided tours and other activities. \n  \nBishop’s ring\, c.1890: gold and citrine\nPortrait ring\, c.1880: silver and enamel paint\nMusical ring\, c.1890: gold and silver\n

SUMMARY:Into The Beat | Dein Herz Tanzt: dir Stefan Westerwelle (2020)
DESCRIPTION:A great coming-of-age movie – teen destined for ballet stardom discovers hip hop dance. She finds a new passion that challenges everything she knows. Torn between ballet and hip-hop\, Kaya must decide which path to follow: the one set by her family or her newfound love for dance. The feel-good vibe is matched with a strong but deftly handled ideological message: the hip hop culture is full of new age dynamism\, and it tears down the class barriers that still surround classical ballet. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Steven Naifeh: Found in Translation
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in Abu Dhabi in 50 years of works by Steven Naifeh\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, businessman and artist – particularly of large-scale geometric abstractions that owe much to hos appreciation of geometric art in the Middle East. \nNaifeh\, whose family is of Arab origin though his parents were US diplomats\, grew up in the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia before pursuing art history at both Princeton and Harvard. His practice is closely tied to his family’s experience in the UAE and his exposure to Islamic art; Naifeh’s large works reference the glorious Middle Eastern geometric heritage\, while integrating the newer traditions of geometric abstraction of Europe and America from Kazimir Malevich to Sol Lewitt. The result is a body of work that is both physically imposing and intricately wrought. In both paintings and sculptures\, Naifeh takes specific precedents from millennium-old Islamic and Arab prototypes that were inspired by mathematical principles\, removes them from their temporal and material context\, and reimagines them in the world of twentieth-century international art. \nThe exhibition is organised under the patronage of HE Zaki Nusseibeh\, Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: Steven Naifeh\, Saida XIII (1998)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Seulgi Kim: Ride the Wave
DESCRIPTION:Seulgi Kim’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East brings to Volery Gallery a deeply personal exploration of her emotional journey\,. The sea\, which plays a central role in her work\, becomes a metaphor for life’s turbulence and tranquillity; her depictions of crashing waves and steady rocks speak to resilience in the face of life’s challenges. And they feature her characteristic figures\, navigating the passage from childhood to adulthood\, boys and girls learning how to fit into their own individual adulthood – the innocence of youth is juxtaposed with the weight of adult responsibilities.

There’s all-day music from top talents like DJ Beth Marie\, Ayesha Reid\, DJ LongLiveAce\, Olwyn Murray\, DJ Crown Prince and more – check the website for the schedule – and a few pop-up food stalls too. SUMMARY:Blackadder Goes Forth
DESCRIPTION:A stage adaptation of the fourth (and best-scripted) of the BBC sitcom originally written by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. Dubai Drama Group really can’t go wrong with this – a series of schemes by Captain Edmund Blackadder to escape the horrors of World War One\, aided and impeded by his dimwitted yet endearing sidekick Baldrick\, the bumbling but lovable George\, and his nemesis Captain Darling. Should be laughs a-plenty\, right up to the tragic twist in the tale at the end … James Mitchinson directs and plays Flash; Blackadder is Matthew T Corbett\, Baldrick is Sadiq Saboowala. \nThere are performances at 8pm on 8 and 9 November.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Armin Najib: -continuum
DESCRIPTION:Najib is a multidisciplinary artist from Iran whose practice includes painting\, drawing\, photography\, sculpture\, and art jewellery but primarily revolves around kinetic mechanisms and magnetic fields. His fascination with magnetism\, ergonomic placement elements\, and environmental sensing has led him to develop his own unique tools and instruments. \nThis exhibition deploys this in a meditation on human existence; it “traces our journey from the fluidity of circles to the rigidity of squares\, symbolising the transformations we undergo throughout life … It reflects the pursuit of perfection and salvation while celebrating the inherent beauty of imperfection …” Should be interesting.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sarah Almehairi and Bernhard Buhmann: The Errantries of Sarah Almehairi and Bernhard Buhmann
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of recent paintings by the two artists that feature “unexpected protrusions and punctures … that are\, as the philosopher Édouard Glissant describes it\, ‘a poetics of errantry’\, both adventurous wanderings and rebellious misdirections. Referencing forms and motifs from within their past works\, the artists lure us in with the familiar\, only to journey to new discoveries and connections …” \nFor Almehairi\, this process entails a build-up of layers that may be linked but remain—as the series title states—‘off centred’. Buhmann’s latest works he describes as a “detox version\,” cast out into the world with certain elements removed.

SUMMARY:Gallant Indies | Les Indes galantes: dir Philippe Béziat (2021)
DESCRIPTION:On the stage of the Opéra Bastille in Paris\, 30 dancers from non-traditional genres – hip-hop\, krump\, break\, voguing – reprise and remix Jean-Philippe Rameau’s baroque 1735 masterpiece\, Les Indes galantes. It’s an opera offensive to modern sensibilities that reflected French colonial expansion and represented the myth of the noble savage; this documentary follows the cast over the course of a year as they take the idea from concept to stage\, culminating in a performance run at the Opéra Bastille. The modern mix of urban dance and opera singing represents both a human adventure and a meeting of political realities: so can a new generation of artists storm the Bastille today? Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Rise | En Corps: dir Cédric Klapisch (2021)
DESCRIPTION:Élise (played by real-life Paris Opera Ballet principal ballerina Marion Barbeau in her first film rôle) thought she had the perfect life: an ideal boyfriend and a promising career as a ballet dancer. It all falls apart the day she catches him cheating on her; and after she suffers an injury on stage\, it seems like she might not be able to dance again. The path to physical and emotional recovery will lead her away from Paris to a picturesque location in Brittany – where her friends\, a new love and the freedom of contemporary dance will help her reconnect with her father and most importantly\, herself. A heartwarming and inspiring story that encapsulates the emotional and transformational power of contemporary dance. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige: The Vertiginous Story of Orthosia
DESCRIPTION:The Nahr al Bared refugee camp was built in north Lebanon in 1948 for Palestinian families fleeing the Nakba. At the time\, nobody considered the possibility that they might still be there 75 years later. In 2007\, fighting erupted in the camp between the Lebanese army and Islamist groups exposed an archaeological site which turned out to be the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Orthosia\, lost since being hit by a tsunami in 551 CE. This was a major find\, but a proper archaeological investigation would necessitate yet another displacement for the families living there – a process that would be socially\, politically and humanly untenable. \nThrough storytelling\, video\, photography and installation\, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige imagine what may lie under the ground\, questioning the narratives surrounding the story within the context of a cycle of construction and destruction. \nPerformed by Ahmed Abu Arada and Miryana Milad Almaalouly as part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme\, The Vertiginous Story of Orthosia is presented in Arabic with English subtitles on 9 November; on 10 November it’s in English with Arabic subtitles at the Jameel Arts Centre\, Dubai.

SUMMARY:Searching for Pierrot
DESCRIPTION:A return for this single-hander\, written by and (we think) performed by Gillian Rhodes\, who is really very good at this storytelling-with-performance sort of thing. This time it’s a coming-of-age tale of a young boy in the late 19th century; a chance encounter with the famous clown Pierrot “sets off a chain of events that leads the boy through the city\, from the freak show to the opera and all the way to the future … He meets a host of colourful and mysterious characters that prompt him to question what it really means to be remarkable\, and what it costs”. Recommended. \nThere’s a performance in French at 2.30pm and in English at 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Areej Rajab: Interwoven
DESCRIPTION:New work by the Bahraini artist\, based on an interplay of colours and emotions where the intricate patterns of human behaviour are delicately overlapped with the rhythms of nature: “she reveals the intricate beauty of natural forms and how they mirror the complexities of human emotions\,” says the gallery. By layering colours\, Areej reflects how human emotions and experiences intertwine\, much like patterns in nature. \n“I find inspiration in nature as it is the purest source of colour\,” says the artist. “My focus is on colour combinations and how they blend and overlap rather than just colour itself\, much like how human behaviour and emotions often intertwine and influence one another. Different cultures can interpret colour in various ways\, which adds another layer of meaning to my work”.

A new series of large-scale watercolour and acrylic canvases\, it’s shaped by the belief that bodily connection to specific environments and elements can facilitate spiritual awakening. SUMMARY:Pina: dir Wim Wenders (2011)
DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Wissam Shawkat: Calligraformism
DESCRIPTION:The Iraqi artist and calligrapher introduces the latest examples of his signature style\, merging the beauty of classical Arabic scripts with modern design principles; Calligraforms transforms Thuluth script lettering into abstract\, fluid forms that are removed their textual meaning and presented as stand-alone visual elements. As he puts it\, “Each letter has a life and energy of its own. By magnifying their details and removing the constraints of the text\, I aim to reveal their hidden beauty.” \n“By blending the rich heritage of Arabic calligraphy with influences from modern European abstract movements like Cubism\, and Bauhaus\, Wissam creates a dialogue between the East and West\,” says the gallery. “Calligraformism is more than an art style; it is a philosophy\, an artistic movement\, that reflects Wissam’s desire to break the boundaries of classical calligraphy …” \nTo 11 December.
