SUMMARY:Men’s Rings: the Yves Gastou Collection
DESCRIPTION:The late dealer / collector Yves Gastou (he passed away in 2020) was known for his educated eye\, eclectic tastes\, and an ability to discover lost gems and new talents in art\, design\, jewellery and exquisite taste generally. From an early age Gastou had been fascinated by 18th-century antiques but he also acquired specialities in Art Nouveau and Art Deco\, Venetian glass\, and most recently 20th century designer furniture – especially Ettore Sottsass and Italian design of the 70s generally. But he never confined himself to a particular period: as one commentator noted\, “he was too curious\, and saw beauty in objects that others dismissed”. \nBeyond his work as a gallerist and the position as a design-world tastemaker\, though\, Gastou’s most defining idiosyncrasy was an insatiable fascination with men’s rings. He amassed a highly eclectic collection of better than a thousand\, ranging from rings worn by ancient Egyptians to those sported by members of the Hells Angels. \nThis exhibition features more than 700 of the best examples from Gastou’s collection. These rings range across myriad functions\, from wedding oaths to mystical amulets via statements of membership and confirmation of identity to a simple (or complex) willingness to delight the eye. \nThe exhibition is organised into five themes to allow an immersive exploration of the collector’s personal taste: History\, Gothic\, Christian Mysticism\, Vanitas and Eclecticism. Each tells a story\, reflecting the collector’s unique personality but also echoing the original wearer’s own emotions\, ambitions and memories – there’s a powerful connection between the object and its owner in these pieces. \nThe exhibition had a very successful debut in Paris in 2018\, then travelled on to Tokyo and Hong Kong in 2022 and Shanghai in 2023.  New rings have been added to the selection for its fifth iteration in Dubai\, where it opens to coincide with the 10th edition of Dubai Design Week. DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in Abu Dhabi in 50 years of works by Steven Naifeh\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, businessman and artist – particularly of large-scale geometric abstractions that owe much to hos appreciation of geometric art in the Middle East. \nNaifeh\, whose family is of Arab origin though his parents were US diplomats\, grew up in the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia before pursuing art history at both Princeton and Harvard. His practice is closely tied to his family’s experience in the UAE and his exposure to Islamic art; Naifeh’s large works reference the glorious Middle Eastern geometric heritage\, while integrating the newer traditions of geometric abstraction of Europe and America from Kazimir Malevich to Sol Lewitt. The result is a body of work that is both physically imposing and intricately wrought. In both paintings and sculptures\, Naifeh takes specific precedents from millennium-old Islamic and Arab prototypes that were inspired by mathematical principles\, removes them from their temporal and material context\, and reimagines them in the world of twentieth-century international art. \nThe exhibition is organised under the patronage of HE Zaki Nusseibeh\, Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: Steven Naifeh\, Saida XIII (1998)

DESCRIPTION:The Nahr al Bared refugee camp was built in north Lebanon in 1948 for Palestinian families fleeing the Nakba. At the time\, nobody considered the possibility that they might still be there 75 years later. In 2007\, fighting erupted in the camp between the Lebanese army and Islamist groups exposed an archaeological site which turned out to be the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Orthosia\, lost since being hit by a tsunami in 551 CE. This was a major find\, but a proper archaeological investigation would necessitate yet another displacement for the families living there – a process that would be socially\, politically and humanly untenable. \nThrough storytelling\, video\, photography and installation\, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige imagine what may lie under the ground\, questioning the narratives surrounding the story within the context of a cycle of construction and destruction. \nPerformed by Ahmed Abu Arada and Miryana Milad Almaalouly as part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme\, The Vertiginous Story of Orthosia is presented in Arabic with English subtitles on 9 November; on 10 November it’s in English with Arabic subtitles at the Jameel Arts Centre\, Dubai.

This time it’s a coming-of-age tale of a young boy in the late 19th century; a chance encounter with the famous clown Pierrot “sets off a chain of events that leads the boy through the city\, from the freak show to the opera and all the way to the future … He meets a host of colourful and mysterious characters that prompt him to question what it really means to be remarkable\, and what it costs”. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina.
