SUMMARY:Lamya Gargash: Kun
DESCRIPTION:Through her work\, Gargash delves into spirituality\, transformation\, and the human journey. Her first solo exhibition with the Maraya Art Centre has a title – kun means ‘to be’ – that reflects the exploration of a liminal state between different phases of being\, where transitions occur from one state of mind to another; Gargash aims to create an intervention that evokes a sense of journey\, path\, and guidance and fosters a deep understanding of connectivity. This intervention will be a long gold fabric integrated into the various spaces curated by the compass and its direction; the gold fabric will drape and cover any element crossing its path\, concealing them. \nKun is curated by Cima Azzam. \nTo 10 January.

SUMMARY:Meeting Mozart

SUMMARY:Reminiscencia
DESCRIPTION:Confined to his home during the Covid lockdown of 2020\, artist Malicho Vaca Valenzuela sat down in front of his computer and began collecting memories from the residents of Santiago. His goal was to tell the story of his neighbourhood\, a vibrant area in the heart of the Chilean capital; his social media request for testimonies and personal memories about public spaces received numerous responses\, and at the same time his grandparents started to share their own memories with him\, their stories intertwining with the others. In this country “where there are immense blue skies in which one can read but where one doesn’t know what is hidden in the ground\,” the director digs into the earth: a simple click on a digital map and he uncovers mysterious loves and repressed revolutions\, so many fragments of an intimate and collective memory. Audience members are invited to quit chasing time and listen to the voices within them\, to cling to what may still remain of a memory. \nReminiscencia is part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme. There is a second performance on 3 November.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Andy Warhol\, The Glam Factory
DESCRIPTION:A collection of more than 100 of Warhol’s works\, curated by Nada Ghandour\, which aims to trace Warhol’s rise from his modest beginnings in commercial illustration to his status as the Pope of Pop Art via screenprints\, photos\, and magazines from the 1960s to the 1980s. (The good news: seems there are none of his films.) \nThe exhibition is organized into two sections\, one for the man himself and the other to The Factory. Andy Warhol: From Shadows to Light covers the significant milestones of his career and his aesthetic evolution\, from his advertising drawings to the Campbell’s Soup Cans. Additionally\, it features stars who shared Warhol’s extravagant social life and sometimes collaborated artistically with him (Calvin Klein\, Giorgio Armani\, Mick Jagger). \nThe AED 80 ticket is for weekdays; weekends the price goes up to AED 100.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sumayyah Samaha: Lines and Forms
DESCRIPTION:A range of works from the Lebanese-born NYC-based artist that are rooted in spontaneity and the intuitive interplay between forms and lines. The exhibition continues an exploration of form\, line\, and colour in a series that began in 2014 and continues to evolve with each new creation. \nSays the gallery: “Each piece in the series begins with the artist laying down forms on a blank canvas\, allowing one form to naturally lead to another\, creating a visual conversation. These forms\, each with its own narrative\, are connected by lines that serve as guiding threads\, helping the viewer navigate the complex stories that unfold across the canvas.

SUMMARY:Taste the Waste: dir Valentin Thurn (2011)
DESCRIPTION:Valentin Thurn’s documentary shines a spotlight on the global scandal of food waste. Why do we throw away so much? On the way from the farm to the dinner table\, more than half the food we grow gets thrown away. European households throw away 100 billion Euros worth of food each year – as much as the annual turnover at Nestlé\, the world’s largest food corporation. The food people throw away in Europe would be enough to feed all the hungry people in the world twice over … So what can we do? How can we improve our behaviour? \nThurn seeks explanations: from supermarket sales staff and managers\, from bakers\, wholesale market inspectors\, welfare recipients\, ministers\, farmers and EU bureaucrats. We all have responsibility: the EU for instance sets restrictive guidelines for selling produce (apples must have a minimum size; potatoes must not be too big or too small)\, and customers’ tastes and preference are equally burdensome (who is happy to buy day-old bread? Why do we expect flawless fruit?). At least Thurn finds that some people do oppose this madness with imagination and commitment. \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n12 November More than Honey dir Markus Imhoof (2012)\n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:Continuing this seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. Why then has she been sidelined in art history?

SUMMARY:Men’s Rings: the Yves Gastou Collection
DESCRIPTION:The late dealer / collector Yves Gastou (he passed away in 2020) was known for his educated eye\, eclectic tastes\, and an ability to discover lost gems and new talents in art\, design\, jewellery and exquisite taste generally. From an early age Gastou had been fascinated by 18th-century antiques but he also acquired specialities in Art Nouveau and Art Deco\, Venetian glass\, and most recently 20th century designer furniture – especially Ettore Sottsass and Italian design of the 70s generally. But he never confined himself to a particular period: as one commentator noted\, “he was too curious\, and saw beauty in objects that others dismissed”. \nBeyond his work as a gallerist and the position as a design-world tastemaker\, though\, Gastou’s most defining idiosyncrasy was an insatiable fascination with men’s rings. He amassed a highly eclectic collection of better than a thousand\, ranging from rings worn by ancient Egyptians to those sported by members of the Hells Angels. \nThis exhibition features more than 700 of the best examples from Gastou’s collection. These rings range across myriad functions\, from wedding oaths to mystical amulets via statements of membership and confirmation of identity to a simple (or complex) willingness to delight the eye. \nThe exhibition is organised into five themes to allow an immersive exploration of the collector’s personal taste: History\, Gothic\, Christian Mysticism\, Vanitas and Eclecticism. Each tells a story\, reflecting the collector’s unique personality but also echoing the original wearer’s own emotions\, ambitions and memories – there’s a powerful connection between the object and its owner in these pieces. \nThe exhibition had a very successful debut in Paris in 2018\, then travelled on to Tokyo and Hong Kong in 2022 and Shanghai in 2023.  New rings have been added to the selection for its fifth iteration in Dubai\, where it opens to coincide with the 10th edition of Dubai Design Week. It runs Tuesday to Saturday\, 10am to 7pm\, to 26 April. \nL’ÉCOLE Middle East is holding a Public Open Day on Saturday 9 November\, with course demonstrations\, kids workshops\, guided tours and other activities. \n  \nBishop’s ring\, c.1890: gold and citrine\nPortrait ring\, c.1880: silver and enamel paint\nMusical ring\, c.1890: gold and silver\n

SUMMARY:Into The Beat | Dein Herz Tanzt: dir Stefan Westerwelle (2020)
DESCRIPTION:A great coming-of-age movie – teen destined for ballet stardom discovers hip hop dance. She finds a new passion that challenges everything she knows. Torn between ballet and hip-hop\, Kaya must decide which path to follow: the one set by her family or her newfound love for dance. The feel-good vibe is matched with a strong but deftly handled ideological message: the hip hop culture is full of new age dynamism\, and it tears down the class barriers that still surround classical ballet. Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:Steven Naifeh: Found in Translation
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in Abu Dhabi in 50 years of works by Steven Naifeh\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, businessman and artist – particularly of large-scale geometric abstractions that owe much to hos appreciation of geometric art in the Middle East. \nNaifeh\, whose family is of Arab origin though his parents were US diplomats\, grew up in the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia before pursuing art history at both Princeton and Harvard. His practice is closely tied to his family’s experience in the UAE and his exposure to Islamic art; Naifeh’s large works reference the glorious Middle Eastern geometric heritage\, while integrating the newer traditions of geometric abstraction of Europe and America from Kazimir Malevich to Sol Lewitt. The result is a body of work that is both physically imposing and intricately wrought. In both paintings and sculptures\, Naifeh takes specific precedents from millennium-old Islamic and Arab prototypes that were inspired by mathematical principles\, removes them from their temporal and material context\, and reimagines them in the world of twentieth-century international art. \nThe exhibition is organised under the patronage of HE Zaki Nusseibeh\, Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: Steven Naifeh\, Saida XIII (1998)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Seulgi Kim: Ride the Wave
DESCRIPTION:Seulgi Kim’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East brings to Volery Gallery a deeply personal exploration of her emotional journey\,. The sea\, which plays a central role in her work\, becomes a metaphor for life’s turbulence and tranquillity; her depictions of crashing waves and steady rocks speak to resilience in the face of life’s challenges. And they feature her characteristic figures\, navigating the passage from childhood to adulthood\, boys and girls learning how to fit into their own individual adulthood – the innocence of youth is juxtaposed with the weight of adult responsibilities.

There’s all-day music from top talents like DJ Beth Marie\, Ayesha Reid\, DJ LongLiveAce\, Olwyn Murray\, DJ Crown Prince and more – check the website for the schedule – and a few pop-up food stalls too.
