SUMMARY:March Meeting 2024
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual convening of artists\, curators\, scholars and arts practitioners from around the world to discuss issues in contemporary art focuses this time on collectives whose practice intertwines artmaking and community building in various forms of collaboration that advance social justice. \nThrough talks\, roundtable discussions\, lectures\, workshops\, performances and more\, MM 2024 invites participants to radically reimagine more inclusive\, equitable\, sustainable and liveable futures. It will examine collaborative methods and modalities that both reappraise artistic\, curatorial and activist approaches and reconfigure the role of art and artists in our current lived realities. It also considers alternative forms of coming together\, such as learning platforms\, activist movements\, correspondences or publishing\, which can serve as toolkits for social justice\, solidarity and political mobilisation. \n

SUMMARY:Les Enfants Perdus: dir Michèle Jacob (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Four young siblings find themselves abandoned in a house in the woods in Belgian writer-director Michèle Jacob’s creepily atmospheric suspense thriller. For much of its running time\, The Lost Children has the ominous atmosphere of a slow-burn horror film; “the forest doesn’t want us to leave and the house is haunted” as one of the children says.  Things aren’t quite as clear-cut as this implies\, though\, one review descries the film as having a David Lynch vibe. But it’s engaging\, is occasionally illuminated by flashes of dark wit\, does eventually come to a conclusion\, and doesn’t take too long to reach it … \nThis film in a short Francophone season (with English subtitles) at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi – shows in the Sorbonne’s rather nice outdoor garden. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dina El Wedidi | Samora Pinderhughes
DESCRIPTION:The rich melodic culture of Egyptian music from Dina El Wedidi is set alongside the harmonically sophisticated sounds of American jazz mixed with RnB and post-rock by Samora Pinderhughes. It’s an intimate\, cross-boundary double bill\, the first of two this weekend that\, as The Arts Center’s Executive Artistic Director Bill Bragin put it\, “continues The Arts Center’s tradition of highlighting visionary artists whose work defies easy categorisation”. \nEl Wedidi last performed at The Arts Center in its inaugural 2015-2016 season as part of the Nile Project. Her innovative approach has earned her a significant reputation on the regional and global stage; her music is influenced by Egyptian folk music and Arab poetry\, resonating with the beauty of cultural diversity. The show features a selection of songs from her previous albums and new singles\, presenting her as both a singer and music composer and showcasing different chapters in her remarkable career. \nSamora Pinderhughes is a pianist\, vocalist\, and composer who commits himself to making art in his everyday life. Through honest lyrics and harmonic language\, his work delves into the things society tries to hide – its history\, its structures\, the individual\, and the daily things we all experience but don’t know how to talk about. With a musical style that cuts across multiple genres\, his performance is an invitation for the audience to express themselves and their inner thoughts by feeling things deeply and focusing on how we all live. \nThere will be a night souk as well\, with 40 retail vendors offering locally made artisan products\, including handmade soaps\, candles\, local artwork\, jewellery\, home décor\, and pottery. And if you want to take the second concert in this weekend series as well\, there’s a two-day pass available at AED 155. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Boogie Box x Warehouse Party
DESCRIPTION:Boogie Box has scheduled another of its superlative back-to-the-best-of-yesterday nights – yep\, a six-hour warehouse rave in an actual warehouse. It’s another of the Box’s leftfield venue finds\, this one The Hangar at JA The Resort\, which is actually an industrial space used as a workshop for boats (there’s a mini marina by the hotel). So the high ceiling\, unglitzy finishing and rough edges should help deliver the full warehouse rave experience. \nExpect a premium sound system\, enhanced lighting and visuals\, art installations and decor inspired by the 90s. Headliners are Anthea\, “one of the most charismatic selectors on and off the decks”; and the prolific German house/techno producer (and magpie favourite) Isolée. Also on the wheels of steel / Ableton-and-Macbooks are Kyle Bower and hometown hero Nasrawi. \nTake glowsticks and expect to bop till past 3am. We’re citing the basic door price on the night but there are bargains for early bird purchases and premium deals for extras. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Dina El Wedidi – The Creative Blocks of Music
DESCRIPTION:Dina El Wedidi shares a bill at The Arts Center this weekend with Samora Pinderhughes\, but is also leading this workshop which aims to explore the relationship between music\, self\, common struggles\, and more. Working with the idea that music is innately human\, this workshop is an invitation to get to know each other through our stories\, ideas\, sounds\, and our art. El Wedii will delve into questions such as: what does identity mean to you? What is the importance of having your own sound? What do genres mean to you? What is a creative block\, and how can we overcome it? Participants are invited to bring their own instruments to the workshop. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The groundbreaking vision of the iconic Tunisian artist is spotlighted in a performance ranging from folk music to electronica via straight-up rock. Mathlouthi is a songwriter\, composer\, guitarist\, and singer with an otherworldly voice that sounds equally at home in the streets\, clubs\, theatres\, or at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony where she performed in 2015. Her sound has shifted and complicated\, incorporating a dark atmosphere\, expansive electronics\, and digital glitches. \nFor this concert\, she will showcase her environmentally-themed project Everywhere We Looked Was Burning\, accompanied by electronics and a string quartet (which includes NYUAD instructor Klaudia Olborska-Szymańska on violin). \nThere will be a night souk as well\, with 40 retail vendors offering locally made artisan products\, including handmade soaps\, candles\, local artwork\, jewellery\, home décor\, and pottery. \n

SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its policy of attracting established blue-chip touring performances\, Dubai Opera is running Broadway Entertainment Group’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical for a three-week run. \nThe story is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of a musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of the young soprano Christine\, the Phantom grooms her as his protégé – but that doesn’t go too well\, and his obsession sets the scene for a dramatic collision of jealousy\, madness and passion. \nThe show\, which celebrated 37 years last October\, has won over 70 major theatre awards – it’s Lloyd-Webber’s most successful – and reportedly has been seen by more than 160 million people worldwide; now it’s our turn … There are performances between 22 February and 10 March (not Mondays)\, with shows at 8pm on weekdays and 2pm and 8pm on Saturdays\, 2pm and 7.30pm on the Sundays. Tickets look a tad pricey\, but this is a lavish production with a big cast and a 2h45m run time that could well justify the cost. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Culture Summit Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:The sixth edition of the Summit\, which runs 3 to 5 March\, again brings together “leaders from fields of art\, heritage\, media\, museums\, music\, public policy and technology from over 90 countries”. Under the theme A Matter of Time\, this edition will investigate the role that culture could play “in helping us navigate this moment of inflection in the way we relate to the notion of time … The sessions will shift away from ‘mechanical time’ – characteristic of our contemporary era – to a ‘new cultural time’\, one that is realigned with the rhythm of human awareness and nature”. \nEach day\, the Summit programme will follow a specific sub-theme to unpack how our relation to time is evolving\, examine the challenges this evolution represents for the culture and creative sectors\, and provide focused\, functional solutions. The agenda will feature keynotes\, plenary sessions\, panel discussions\, artist talks\, case study workshops\, creative conversations\, policy sessions\, cultural performances\, and a visual art exhibition. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Stuntwomen: dir Elena Avdija (2022)
DESCRIPTION:“Cinema has a fascination with sexist violence. We like to see women suffer\, getting kidnapped or raped\,” said Avdija in a Variety interview. These are the scenes the stuntwomen protagonists of her telling documentary – Virginie Arnaud\, Petra Sprecher and Estelle Piget – are usually asked to portray. The film questions how cinema and television distribute roles and violence on the screen; “There will always be work for stuntwomen\, because there will always be stories about women getting hurt”. \nThis film screens in a short Francophone season (with English subtitles) at Sorbonne Abu Dhabi – shows in the Sorbonne’s rather nice outdoor garden. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Echoes of the Orient
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural exhibition of the brand new Bassam Freiha Art Foundation is curated from the private collection of Bassam Said Freiha to offer a perspective into how the Middle East has been perceived\, portrayed and romanticised over time – particularly the depiction of femininity. As Prof Faredah Al-Murahhem notes: “Western Orientalists in the 19th century often fantasized about the harem and the veiled women\, leading to a skewed understanding of the concept”\, with paintings often presenting scenarios that were inauthentic or sensationalized from an Islamic viewpoint. \nTo challenge such stereotypes and in order to foster a deeper intercultural dialogue\, the exhibition juxtaposes Western portrayals with works by Arab artists. Featured alongside works by Rudolphe Ernst\, Léon Comerre\, Paul Leroy\, Jan-Baptist Huysmans and Fabio Fabbi from the Bassam Freiha Collection are significant works on loan by Arab modernists\, including Habib Srour\, Moustafa Faroukh\, Cesar Gemayel\, Tawfik Tarek\, and early works by the acclaimed Emirati artist Abdul Qader Al Rais. \nTo 15 August. \nAbove: Rudolf Ernst (1854–1932)\, Odalisque (undated) \n

SUMMARY:Noé Soulier: Passages
DESCRIPTION:A 40-minute site-specific project that adapts to each location in which it’s performed – the movement sequences by the four dancers are predetermined\, and it uses a bodily vocabulary that choreographer Noé Soulier has been developing over the last 10 years; but the choreography is constructed within and for each specific place (which for Abu Dhabi is NYUAD’s East Plaza). Performers trigger resonances activating the physical memories of the audience\, starting with their relationship to the spaces they inhabit. \nSoulier is director of the Cndc–Angers (Centre national de danse contemporaine)\, a unique institution that combines a creative choreography centre\, a school of contemporary dance\, and a performance programme. \nDance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels has been supporting the presentation of Passages since 2022\, and in April it will be performed in Kyoto. \nTickets are free\, but all spaces are currently taken – returns may become available. \n

SUMMARY:Ola Maciejewska: Bombyx Mori
DESCRIPTION:In this 55-minute this work for three dancers\, choreographer Ola Maciejewska draws inspiration from the innovative early 20th century work of modern dance pioneer Loïe Fuller. Bombyx Mori explores movement as a result of the interactions between the body and other things (lights\, materials\, sound)\, as opposed to movement from within the body. The title Bombyx Mori refers to the silkworm\, which has become entirely dependent on humans for its survival; dance\, archives and artifice are interwoven in this performance\, providing a metaphor for the hybrid nature of things. \nWith the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels\, Maciejewska is currently working on a larger body of work focused on convergences between dance and visual art and transmission. \n
