SUMMARY:Essia Jaïbi: Metamorphoses #2
DESCRIPTION:In this performance piece\, Essia Jaïbi revisits the memories seared into her mind since childhood – she locks her mother\, Jalila Baccar\, in the glass-walled dressing room of an imagined theatre and pressures her to address the audience. Devised as a confrontation between two generations\, the performance tackles art\, theatre and cultural activism that evolve into a critique of Tunisia’s political\, cultural\, economic\, environmental and healthcare systems as well as the rights of minorities and people with disabilities. \nOriginally scheduled for last October but postponed in solidarity with the situation in Gaza\, there are now performances (in Arabic with English and French subtitles) on 19\, 20\, and 22 January – all start at 8.30pm and last around 40 minutes. This is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October to February\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Traversing Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel is running a third season of Night School\, a seminar programme where UAE residents can discuss urbanism and history in Dubai. Under this season’s theme\, There You Are\, participants will assess how much we can know about a place just by taking a good look around. The seminar itself is fully booked\, but there are three public events in Art Jameel’s lobby; this is one of them. \nHind Mezaina curates five short films that respond to the Night School theme of sensing our whereabouts: \nEl Chinero\, A Phantom Hill dir Bani Khoshnoudi (2022\, 11 min) El Chinero is a rugged hill in the Baja California desert where many people are thought to have died while crossing the desert from mainland Mexico. Myth and identity\, reality and fiction\, ghosts and memory: a site of tragedy with no traces nor remnants to be seen. How can one fill this memory void with images and artefacts in an attempt to construct an archive where none exists? \nTransitions dir Aurèle Ferrier (2017\, 13 min) A journey from the civilising void of the desert to a maximal urban\, capitalistic and hedonistic density\, which in the case of Las Vegas assumes some bizarre expression. \nThe Unofficial Countryside dir Jacob Cartwright & Nick Jordan (2021\, 17 min) An observational documentary on the ‘edgeland’ landscapes between the urban and the rural\, where nature thrives on the fringes of the city in a landscape shaped by the activities and imprints of people passing through. \nBlue Honda Civic dir Jussi Eerola (2020\, 10 min) A minimalistic road movie mirroring the emotions of the driver through the landscapes (s)he has chosen to look at. \nShadegan dir Ako Salemi (2019\, 15 min) Twelve-year-old Milad guides his boat across the Shadegan wetlands in southwestern Iran. The beautiful photography shows an apparently relaxed life\, far away from the tyranny of mobile phones. Yet here\, too\, the threat of drought and pollution looms. \nAbove: Still from Shadegan\, Ako Salemi\, 2019 \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hazem Harb: Gauze
DESCRIPTION:A solo show by the Palestinian visual artist\, curated by Munira Al Sayegh\, which “invites viewers to explore the profound connections between material\, the body\, the context and the artist’s personal journey as a Gazan native in exile”. \nGauze offers insight into the multifaceted significance of the titular material within Palestinian collective histories; Harb’s connection with it dates back to his childhood in Gaza\, when he used gauze as an artistic medium akin to canvas. Decades later\, Harb revisits gauze as a medium in this new body of work that reflects on his early works with gauze\, exploring the transformative power of reflection and imagination in charting an emancipatory future. \nTo 15 February. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Revoir Paris: dir Alice Wincoer (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Wincoer’s gently searing drama is loosely based on the Bataclan concert hall attack in Paris in 2015 (her brother was a survivor). Virginie Efira is excellent as Mia\, a woman struggling with the trauma of having survived a brutal assault on a restaurant in the centre of town that left behind dozens of victims; as the title implies\, the film is about memory – remembering Paris as it was\, remembering life as it was. The acting is good\, the photography a paeon to the city. Recommended. \nIn French with English subtitles. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fridge Concert Series 42: Bull Funk Zoo | DJ Frezidante
DESCRIPTION:This should be a good night: Bull Funk Zoo is usually excellent\, mixing hard rock with funk and some indie strains of occasional psychedelia. But frankly it is mostly hard rock: “imagine a big bad bull rocking out\, fornicating & wildly stompin’ the blues to rubble. SUMMARY:Rouge (Red Soil): dir Farid Bentoumi (2020)
DESCRIPTION:An occupational nurse in a chemical plant turns whistleblower over toxic discharges but has to balance fighting for the truth against the risk of alienating her entire family. The result could be a goodies vs baddies thriller or a dogmatic dissertation; in fact it’s neither — yes\, there are thriller elements\, but the personal issues make it a rich study. That’s helped in no small part by the quality of the acting (Zita Hanrot as the nurse\, Sami Bouajila as her father\, Céline Sallette as a committed journalist with a dark side). Also relevant: it’s based on a real incident (in Hungary\, but the same process is widely used around the world with the same dangers). As the review says\, it’s a “tense and timely thriller”. \nThe film screens in the recently inaugurated NAAS film programme under the theme ‘Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future NAAS is a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAE\, including the Goethe-Institut\, the French and Canadian embassies\, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, in partnership with Manarat Al Sadiyyat. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reel Palestine 2024
DESCRIPTION:The UAE’s annual festival of Palestinian stories delivered via independent and alternative cinema is back\, and with massively enhanced relevance. The films\, mostly in Arabic with English subtitles\, are … \nThe Teacher dir Farah Nabulsi (2023) A Palestinian school teacher struggles to reconcile his life-threatening commitment to political resistance with his emotional support for one of his students and the chance of a new romantic relationship with a British volunteer worker \n26 Jan 7pm (screening plus Q&A with director)\n4 Feb 5pm 7pm 9.30pm \nHere and Elsewhere dir Jean-Luc Godard\, Jean-Pierre Gorin\, Groupe Dziga Vertov\, Anne-Marie Miéville (1976) Commissioned to produce a film on the Palestinian Revolution\, Godard and Gorin’s plans were upended by the Black September attacks. Godard and Miéville transformed the original footage into a scathing self-critical documentary\, paralleling the lives of a French and a Palestinian family \n26 Jan 10pm \nR21 AKA Restoring Solidarity dir Mohanad Yacubi (2022) The growing struggle for Palestinian self-determination between 1960 and 1980 was supported by radical left-wing movements worldwide. This is illustrated by a collection of 16mm films by militant filmmakers from various countries\, which were dubbed and screened in Japan – where audiences sympathised but also identified with the Palestinians \n2 Feb 7pm \nAida Returns dir Carol Mansour (2023) A poignant\, sometimes painful\, sometimes humorous\, often absurd story of a multiple journey: the journey of loss as the director’s mother Aida struggled with losing herself to Alzheimer’s disease\, but finding solace in her repeated “returning” to the Yafa and Palestine of her youth; the journey of the loss of a parent; and the ultimate return journey back to Yafa where Aida would finally find rest and be herself once more \n27 Jan 7pm (screening plus Q&A with director)\n3 Feb 9.30pm \nLyd dir Rami Younes\, Sarah Ema Friedland (2023) A sci fi documentary of a city that once connected Palestine to the world — what it once was\, what it is now\, and what it could have become. \n27 Jan 9pm\n31 Jan 7pm (screening plus Q&A with directors) \nSlingshot Hip Hop dir Jacqueline Reem Salloum (2008) A documents on the emergence and evolution of Palestinian Hip Hop\, weaving together the narratives of young artists navigating life in Gaza\, the West Bank\, and Palestine \n27 Jan 8pm (outdoor screening at The Yard) \nWe No Longer Prefer Mountains dir Inas Halabi (2023) Documentary on the Druze towns of Dalyet el Carmel and Isfiya\, drawing the viewer into a world of geographic isolation and a locale shaped by coercion and control. Weaving together intimate engagements with members of the community in shared domestic spaces and outdoor environments\, the film explores how the inner politics of the Druze have been reconfigured and reshaped since 1948 \n27 Jan 9.15pm (screening plus Q&A with director)\n1 Feb 9.15pm \nTomorrow’s Freedom: Marwan Barghouti dir Georgia Scott\, Sophia Scott (2022) For five years\, the directors followed the family of imprisoned Palestinian political leader and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Marwan Barghouti; the resulting film shares the struggles of his hunger strikes\, brought on by harsh prison conditions and the desire to make a stand. A collage of interviews with the people who know him best\, Tomorrow’s Freedom paints a portrait of a man who may one day lead the Palestinian people \n28 Jan 4.15pm (screening plus Q&A with director)\n31 Jan 9.15pm \nThree Promises dir Yousef Srouji (2023) A mother films her family’s daily life the second intifada in the West Bank in the early 2000s. Note that Quoz Art fest runs 27 and 28 January\, and for films on those dates you’ll have to pay extra to actually get into Alserkal Avenue (AED 63 for the weekend\, and well worth it anyway).

SUMMARY:Radouan Mriziga: Libya
DESCRIPTION:In Libya\, Radouan Mriziga collaborates with dancers to elaborate on transgenerational shared histories and epistemologies from an Amazigh perspective\, where the memories of the body play a pivotal role (the Amazighs are the indigenous inhabitants of the North African littoral\, isolated from the rest of Africa by the Sahara). North African music\, dance\, landscapes and cave paintings depicting prehistoric dance moves are among the interconnected elements that inform a complex choreographic adventure. Layers of meaning are uncovered before us\, drawing the features of an imagined\, shared future from an Amazigh point of view. \nThis is part of the second season of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s performance programme that invites you “to encounter new experiences while exploring the heritage houses and art spaces of the city”. Perform Sharjah\, which runs from October 2023 to February 2024\, is curated by Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Performance and Senior Curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh. \n
