SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Morteza Khosravi: The Floating Table
DESCRIPTION:Influenced by the likes of Lucian Freud and Egon Schiele\, Khosravi’s drawings and paintings suggest that he’s looking for artistic ideas – “for him\, how to encounter pieces is important than pieces itself”. But does have a characteristic style of painting groups of people that appear to be faded photographs; the viewer has the same sense of nostalgia and reminiscence of better times as they would if they were looking at old family photos. It’s a clever device\, inviting a great deal of participation from the viewer …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Wassef Boutros-Ghali: A Retrospective (1965-2016)
DESCRIPTION:In the canvases of Wassef Boutros-Ghali\, colours informed by a knowledge of unrelenting Mediterranean sunlight flood the flat plane of the canvas; architectural forms emerge\, collide and re-engineer themselves without a narrative. Boutros-Ghali’s art speaks to the pure and unrestricted physicality of painting\, and his compositions reflect a meticulous yet openhearted response to the human condition – marvels of reason buoyed by a lifetime’s worth of lyricism.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Lala Rukh: The importance of staying quiet
DESCRIPTION:The first exhibition of the new iteration of The importance of staying quiet\, a survey of Pakistani art\, features photographic archives from Lala Rukh’s years at the University of Chicago (1974-76). It includes early works that carry a cinematic sense of composition before arriving at her later language of minimal abstraction\, revealing the sharpening of her framing and the intent of her gaze\, \nUnlike her formal exhibitions\, the Chicago photographs are not minimal or abstract. They contain architecture\, people\, animals\, objects\, and most importantly\, construct narratives; the ‘set’ and direction recall filmic technique. These photos document Lala’s new surroundings and influences as she encountered the art\, music\, and politics that encouraged experimentation …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Marwan Bassiouni: New Western Views (Preview)
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the region for Bassiouni offers a first look at an ongoing international project that reframes landscape photography through the lens of lived Muslim presence in the contemporary West. Each of these photographs – taken from inside mosques across the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, and the UK – centres on a window\, an aperture on to the outside world that is rarely found in purpose-built mosques. Through them we glimpse familiar Western landscapes: traffic junctions\, supermarkets\, apartment blocks\, sports fields. But these views are framed by examples of Islamic visual culture – patterned tiles\, rugs\, wooden minbars\, and more. \nNew Western Views is a counterpoint to a long history of Orientalist image-making. Bassiouni’s landscapes are no longer the backdrop for conquest\, curiosity\, or romanticisation; they are simply what exists outside the mosque window. In doing so\, the work avoids the familiar tropes of victimhood or spectacle …

SUMMARY:My Driver and I: dir Ahd Kamel (2024)
DESCRIPTION:The last in NYUAD Arts Center’s fall film season\, a series which explores history\, identity\, and belonging through Arab and international cinema\, while offering audiences the chance to engage directly with filmmakers is inspired by the childhood of Saudi writer-director-producer Ahd Kamel. Set in Jeddah in the 1980s and 90s\, the film traces the unlikely friendship between a rebellious Saudi teenager and her Sudanese driver\, capturing the ways independence and belonging are negotiated in everyday life. He drives her in a car\, but ultimately enables her to take the wheel of her own life’s journey. \nKamel said\, “My Driver and I is my most personal film\, an act of remembrance and gratitude. It’s about friendship that transcends social roles\, about love that hides in everyday moments\, and about the silent bonds that shape us long after the person is gone. In telling this story\, I wanted to honour Mohi\, my driver\, who was never just that – he was family\, he was home.” \nThe screening will be followed by a live conversation with Kamel.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Afra Al Dhaheri: Restless Circle
DESCRIPTION:A selection of works by Afra Al Dhaheri that explore the structural effects of tension\, repetition and time provides Sharjah Art Foundation’s first show of Autumn. “Working with materials such as cotton rope\, fabric\, cement and hair\, the artist emphasises slow gestures\, intentional movements and the fatigue that can build from ongoing\, repetitive and even invisible labour …” \nThe exhibition’s title comes from a newly commissioned installation with the same name; that draws inspiration from desert plants that create spiral patterns in the sand as they move with the wind. For Afra Al Dhaheri\, this offers a metaphor for mental exhaustion and collective burnout\, the sense of being endlessly pushed to produce or perform: “in other works\, repetition emerges as a condition of making\, a method shaped by the interplay of tension\, weight and the ongoing rhythm of doing and undoing”.

SUMMARY:Dubai Design Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:The region’s leading (only significant?) design festival returns for its 11th edition with the usual hectic mix of commissions\, exhibitions\, installations\, talks and live events. \nNatasha Carella\, DDW’s Director\, said this year the programme was taking a more reflective approach – “exploring design not only as a practice of innovation but also as a social connector\, a civic and cultural force that shapes how we live together\, communicate and build systems of care. From spatial typologies rooted across cultures and climates to a focus on material intelligence\, detail and cultural nuance\, the programme is intentional and human-centred\, bridging heritage with contemporary. Ultimately\, we’re asking: how can design bring people together across disciplines\, geographies and generations?” That sets the bar quite high … \nThe highlights: \nDowntown Design 5-9 November The region’s leading fair for high-quality and contemporary design\, returns to the d3 Waterfront Terrace. This is the B2B part of Design Week\, showing collections\, innovative products and design solutions for the interiors busness; the show\, which includes this year’s cohort of the Athath Fellowship by MAKE in Abu Dhabi and the annual Tanween programme by Tashkeel\, is complemented by a programme of “pop-up concepts”\, regional spotlights\, talks and panel discussions. Its website is here; admission is AED 80 (one day pass; a four-day pass is AED 150) which gives access to both Editions and Downtown Design. \nEditions 5-9 November\, 12pm – 8pm The second outing for the limited-edition art and design show features prints\, photography\, works on paper\, ceramics\, contemporary design\, and artist multiples. It has its own website and charges for admission (one day pass AED 80\, four-day pass AED 150 – access to both Editions and Downtown Design) \nExhibitions and activations The usual diverse mix of exhibitions\, pop ups and activations includes the always-interesting UAE Designer Exhibition; the d3 Architecture Exhibition in partnership with RIBA; Design You Can Feel by technology brand ASUS\, an exploration of materiality\, craftsmanship and AI; and Bootleg Griot\, an independent public library project for works by artists\, collectives and writers of African descent that celebrates creativity\, cultural exchange and accessibility. \nTalks\, Workshops and Masterclasses Hosted in a dedicated Maker Space\, DDW’s workshop programme is aimed at just about anyone – professionals and aspiring creatives of all ages\, interests and levels of experience. And The Forum at Downtown Design returns with live talks and keynotes\, headlined by Tom Dixon in his Dubai debut. \nUrban Commissions Dubai Design Week’s design competition for architects and designers to experiment with ideas for the public realm centred on the courtyard for 2025. This year’s winning proposal\, When Does a Threshold Become a Courtyard?\, is by UAE-based design and research studio Some Kind of Practice\, founded by Omar Darwish and Abdulla Abbas. \nAbwab The annual commission for designers from across Asia and Africa has showcased the work of more than 180 applicants since its inception in 2015\, Abwab. For 2025\, designers were invited to respond to the theme In the Details; the winning pavilion is Stories of the Isle and the Inlet by Maraj\, a Bahrain based architecture and design platform founded by architects Latifa Alkhayat and Maryam Aljomairi\, \nInstallations More than 30 large-scale outdoor installations will transform d3 into “an open-air space of design innovation\, where public spaces become interactive works that invite exploration and engagement”. \nMarketplace 8–9 November This weekend outdoor market for homegrown businesses and independent makers offers products from homeware\, jewellery\, fashion and lifestyle items to F&B\, experiences\, children’s activities and live performances. \nDubai Design Week runs 4 to 9 November\, apart from the specific dates above. Opening is 10am to 10pm. \nThe Urban Commissions 2025 selection: When Does a Threshold Become a Courtyard? by UAE-based design and research studio Some Kind of Practice

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sophie-Yen Bretez: The Unsaid Remains Remembered
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by Paris-based artist Sophie-Yen Bretez for a new body of work that captures moments when one space becomes another\, when times overlap\, and when memory persists as life shifts forward. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mahmoud El Safadi: Personal Sea
DESCRIPTION:Exhibiting for the first time in Dubai\, Lebanese artist Mahmoud El Safadi is showing a collection of miniature paintings on playing cards\, a series of works that reflect on the Mediterranean as a site of memory\, inheritance\, and continuity – “a littoral space that is at once connective and exclusionary\, communal and privatised\, fluid and heavily policed”. Referencing the card game ‘quatorze’\, Safadi layers imagery across the cards to create “a visual palimpsest where personal and inherited memory converge with broader histories of struggle\, surveillance\, and belonging”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdelkader Benchamma: Rumors from the Skies
DESCRIPTION:For his third solo exhibition here\, the French-Algerian artist has taken inspiration from Kometenbuch (The Comet Book)\, a 16th-century Flemish treatise depicting comets and fantastical apparitions; Benchamma suggests how astronomy and astrology\, science and folklore\, continue to overlap in shaping our perception of the cosmos via a new body of intricate ink drawings and landscapes . Meteorites\, crying stones\, and shooting stars drift across forests and horizons\, hovering between recognition and mystery; there’s also a monumental mural paired with a projected animation that extends this vision into immersive territory\, opening onto swirling\, otherworldly sequences of light\, texture\, and form.

SUMMARY:Sites in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:A two-day symposium of readings\, discussions\, and shared meals as part of that unfolds across Sharjah as part of Sharjah Architecture Triennial’s DAAS programme. DAAS is Decolonizing Architecture Advanced Studies\, a programme with no fixed curriculum but instead an environment where “knowledge emerges through encounters\, conversations\, and shared practices”. \nThe DAAS programme moves between different sites: from Sharjah to Sicily\, from Palestine to Stockholm\, “and in the everyday contexts participants bring with them … This mobility reflects the shared condition of displacement\, while also rooting work in situated struggles”. \nSo each session is intended to unfold as a dialogue shaped by lived experiences and research. The programme: \nDay One Saturday 1 November 10am to 6pm\nAl Qasimiyah School\, Sharjah City \nLed by May Al-Dabbagh\, Zoe Butt\, Charles Esche\, and Shahram Khosravi\, these sessions have no fixed topics; instead they invite improvisation\, allowing unexpected connections and solidarities to emerge. \nDay Two Sunday 2 November 2m to 7pm\nConcrete Tent\, Al Madam (transportation provided) \nThe final gathering reflects on conversation as the central methodology of DAAS: “in this shared space\, the art of conversation becomes both a method and a horizon for future encounters – and for the forthcoming iteration of ‘DAAS in Cairo’.

SUMMARY:Rays\, Ripples\, Residue
DESCRIPTION:This major exhibition marks the ten-year anniversary of 421 Arts Campus via a chance to reflect on emergent artistic practices in the UAE\, their possibilities\, and challenges for the future. Featuring video\, performance\, installation\, and multimedia works\, it invites conversations around what it means to produce art in the UAE today from the vantage point of emerging artists\, collectives\, and grassroots initiatives\, to the influential role of cultural institutions that have supported and platformed these practices. \nIt’s realised through three curatorial perspectives\, all with time as a central theme: \nMunira Al Sayegh’s Leading to the Middle draws on the nature of expansion found within a ripple effect\, tracing the influence of key actors whose contributions have created lasting reverberations. Featured artists include Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim\, Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Bait15\, Adele Bea Cipste\, Khaled Esguerra\, Lamya Gargash\, and Auguste Nomeiakaite. \nIn Ghosts of Arrival\, Nadine Khalil meditates on the layered experience of arriving after a time of artistic ferment\, risk-taking\, and a now-mythologized energy that shaped cultural production in the UAE from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s. Rather than restaging or romanticizing the past\, Khalil proposes that the memory of risk itself becomes a material\, informing art-making and exhibition-building in the present. Featured artists include Tarek Al-Ghoussein\, Mona Ayyash and Nadine Ghandour\, Lucinda Childs\, Maria Daher\, Sarah Daher\, Cristalina Parra\, Bait Juma\, Hashel Lamki\, Sara Naim\, and Isaac Sullivan. \nMurtaza Vali’s SUN gathers artworks created and exhibited since 2015 that revolve around the idea and experience of the sun. Her section presents a nuanced view of the sun as a mediated and commodified presence – at once image\, data\, brand\, vibe\, and produc\, revealing the contradictions embedded in narratives of modernity and progress. Featured artists include Charbel-joseph H. Boutros\, Khalid Jauffer\, Raja’a Khalid\, Nima Nabavi\, Pratchaya Phinthong\, Sa Tahanan Co. (Jandri Angelo Aguilor\, Farah Fawzi Ali\, Preschelle Ann Bigueras\, Anna Bernice delos Reyes\, Alexandra Chaves\, Niño Consorte\, John Gatapia\, Balaram Ochangco\, Augustine Paredes\, Nicolas Roa)\, Shazia Salam\, and Lantian Xie. \nWhile all distinct in approach\, each section has a shared focus on the minor pivots rather than major inflection points. A look at overlooked gestures that accumulated over time\, Rays\, Ripples\, Residue illustrates the impact of subtle shifts that have shaped the past decade of art-making and exhibition building. It also sets the tone for the next decade of 421 and the UAE’s growing arts ecosystem\, asking what ideas will still carry forward into the next decade? \nTo 26 April.

SUMMARY:Fertile Dreams
DESCRIPTION:The group show brings together artists from the MENA region and its diaspora whose practices engage fertility as a generative force tied to questions of origin\, transformation\, and the cycles that govern land and self. Across drawing\, painting\, ceramics\, textiles\, and installation\, they turn to rhythmic repetition as a shared method of accessing unconscious and symbolic worlds; rooted in Surrealist philosophy yet resonant with the mystic patterns of Middle Eastern spiritual traditions\, their works open passages between body and land\, spirit and matter\, dream and physicality. \nTo 2 January.

SUMMARY:The Wind Will Carry Us: dir Abbas Kiarostami (1999)
DESCRIPTION:Kiarostami wrote and directed this deceptively simple but highly affecting film about a journalist posing as a city engineer who arrives in a Kurdish village to document the locals’ mourning rituals in anticipation of the death of an old woman. She doesn’t die\, though\, and the journalist is forced to slow down and appreciate the lifestyle of the village. The result is a beautifully shot movie\, simple and honest\, about life\, death\, and living … \nScreens as part of a new monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. It’s organised with Bootleg Griot\, an independent public library project currently ensconced in the Rekord Gallery that is aimed at improving access to literature and print media – especially from writers and collectives of African descent.
