SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Culture Summit Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:The seventh edition of the Summit\, which runs 27-29 April\, again brings together “thought leaders” from art\, heritage\, media\, museums\, music\, public policy and technology to debate the role of culture. This year’s theme is the catch-all ‘Culture for Humanity and Beyond’ and the forum will explore “the ever-dynamic relationship between culture and humanity in an unrivalled period of transformation … The Summit will prompt a collective rethinking of human emancipation\, humanism\, and seek to find a new common ground to build a shared sustainable future”. \nThis it will do across three days of panels\, creative conversations\, case studies\, artist talks and workshops\, all reimagining what tomorrow could look like “as old ways of thinking become obsolete”. \nDay one will be focused on the sub-theme\, ‘reshaping the cultural landscape’ As power shifts continue in a world marked by the digital revolution\, economic inequality\, and geopolitical volatility\, cultural identities and societal values are being redefined. The sessions will explore the impact of these shifts on the production\, reception\, and consumption of culture\, and discuss the role the creative sector can play in guiding humanity through uncertainty towards a confident future. \nDay two’s sub-theme is ‘the new frontiers of a post-human environment”’. As advancements in technology\, including AI\, biotechnology\, and environmental studies redefine the essence of humanity\, the sessions on this day will examine how culture can ensure these changes enhance human experience. The programme will explore how the cultural and creative sectors are adapting their business models\, infrastructures\, and policies to seize the opportunities these new frontiers present. \nDay three will examine ‘new frames to redefine Culture for Humanity and Beyond’\, discussing how innovative\, collaborative efforts and the rise of ‘glocal’ approaches can foster resilience\, inclusion\, and sustainability. The sessions will also examine how cultural innovation\, and technology can help reshape narratives and create new common ground to overcome global polarisation. \nThe full programme is here. Attendance is (mostly) by invitation\, but you can ‘register your interest’ here and you might get the call … \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Men’s Rings: the Yves Gastou Collection
DESCRIPTION:The late dealer / collector Yves Gastou (he passed away in 2020) was known for his educated eye\, eclectic tastes\, and an ability to discover lost gems and new talents in art\, design\, jewellery and exquisite taste generally. From an early age Gastou had been fascinated by 18th-century antiques but he also acquired specialities in Art Nouveau and Art Deco\, Venetian glass\, and most recently 20th century designer furniture – especially Ettore Sottsass and Italian design of the 70s generally. But he never confined himself to a particular period: as one commentator noted\, “he was too curious\, and saw beauty in objects that others dismissed”. \nBeyond his work as a gallerist and the position as a design-world tastemaker\, though\, Gastou’s most defining idiosyncrasy was an insatiable fascination with men’s rings. He amassed a highly eclectic collection of better than a thousand\, ranging from rings worn by ancient Egyptians to those sported by members of the Hells Angels. \nThis exhibition features more than 700 of the best examples from Gastou’s collection. These rings range across myriad functions\, from wedding oaths to mystical amulets via statements of membership and confirmation of identity to a simple (or complex) willingness to delight the eye. \nThe exhibition is organised into five themes to allow an immersive exploration of the collector’s personal taste: History\, Gothic\, Christian Mysticism\, Vanitas and Eclecticism. Each tells a story\, reflecting the collector’s unique personality but also echoing the original wearer’s own emotions\, ambitions and memories – there’s a powerful connection between the object and its owner in these pieces. \nThe exhibition had a very successful debut in Paris in 2018\, then travelled on to Tokyo and Hong Kong in 2022 and Shanghai in 2023.  New rings have been added to the selection for its fifth iteration in Dubai; it runs Tuesday to Saturday\, 10am to 7pm\, to 26 April. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:This year’s ADIBF – remarkably\, it’s the 34th edition – has the theme ‘Knowledge Illuminates our Community’\, a sentiment which brooks no argument. There are 90 participating countries\, the ‘Focus Personality’ is Avicenna (Ibn Sina)\, the ‘Book of the World’ is One Thousand and One Nights\, and the guest of honour\, usually a single nation\, is Culture of the Caribbean Basin. \nLast year there were more than 230\,000 visitors\, 1\,350 exhibitors\, and reportedly in excess of 1.5 million books sold. All those numbers should be beaten this time around; ADIBF is a genuine force in the booming regional publishing field\, and some clever extras – like a much-expanded ‘Podcast from Abu Dhabi‘ programme\, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award ceremony\, and a famously busy schedule of something like 2\,000 lectures\, panel discussions\, specialised workshops and other activities – make it a good bet for the reader as well as the publishing professional. \nThe book fair has been extended to ten days this year; it runs 9am to 10pm from 26 April to 5 May. Admission is free\, but you’ll need to pre-register.

SUMMARY:Makers’ Month
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Culture is running its third Makers’ Month this weekend at Earth Roastery in Al Quoz – panel discussions\, talks\, and hands-on workshops “designed to sharpen skills and foster collaboration between manufacturing and the creative industries”. The principles are sound: encourage local manufacturing businesses to see what’s going on the crrative field\, encourage creatives to think about using local production facilities if they have one-offs or short runs to make\, generally help the creative sector up its act in thinking commercially. And there are incentives to highlight: Khulood Khoory\, Director of the Projects & Events Department at Dubai Culture\, said the weekend would emphasise “Al Quoz Creative Zone’s unique resources\, investment opportunities\, and proven models”. \nThe workshops range from the basics – sustainability\, craftsmanship\, starting up a business – to more advanced topics like using AI in product design workflows. And some of the presentations are sure to be packed out: Alhaan Ahmed of ARDH on ‘Designers as Entrepreneurs: Crafting Sustainable and Desirable Solutions for the Future’ looks a good one. ‘The Art and Business of Ceramics: Craft\, Growth\, and Community’ with a strong panel is another good subject\, the delicate balance beween art\, community and commerce. \nThe programme – download the PDF here – also features a guided bus tour organised by Make Works UAE to visit three local factories: a furniture manufacturer\, a multipurpose production facility\, and a printing house and design studio. The tour offers live demonstrations and real-time exposure to the creatives’ processes\, “underlining Al Quoz Creative Zone’s technical expertise and craftsmanship”. \nAttendance is free\, but you’ll need to pre-register. And no\, we don’t know why a weekend event is titled as a month …

SUMMARY:Fragments from Heaven: dir Adnane Baraka (2022)
DESCRIPTION:In the bleak emptiness of the Moroccan desert\, a nomad shepherd called Mohamed lives in a tent with his family. His way of life is disappearing; the land is so dry (presumably as a result of climate change) that there is not enough grass for sheep to graze. He describes watching a meteor shower – blue fire lighting up the sky followed by a noise so loud people thought it was an earthquake – and he joins men looking for the debris … \nAdnane Baraka’s cinematic essay about the origins of human life screens in dialogue with the ongoing Abdullah Al Saadi exhibition Sites of Memory\, Sites of Amnesia as part of a film programme curated by researcher and scholar Rasha Salti that invites audiences to reflect on the intricate interplay between remembrance and forgetting\, evoking profound connections to collective and personal histories.

SUMMARY:Sunday Morning
DESCRIPTION:Successful 40s-ish photographer Mat takes us on a heart-warming\, epiphanic journey in this one-man show\, written by Nick Warren and directed by Jenine Collocott. \nOn learning that his girlfriend is pregnant\, a stunned Mat (James Cuningham) goes for a run in his neighbourhood to do some thinking. Straying from his regular route he ventures into an unknown and rundown section of the city where he makes a gruesome discovery that changes everything … This fast-paced show is infused with the kind of wit\, acute observation\, real suspense\, imminent danger\, selfish need\, and poignant humanity that are the basic elements of urban life in contemporary South Africa\, where it’s a multiple award winner. \nThere’s a second performance on 2 May.

SUMMARY:Synchrony: From New York to Nigeria
DESCRIPTION:This is a rather special evening for the second edition of NYUAD’s The City and the Writer series\, featuring an extraordinary lineup of writers\, directors\, actors\, and musicians and centred around Awam Amkpa’s 2024 film The Man Died (above). That is based on Wole Soyinka’s harrowing prison memoir of the same name\, chronicling 27 months of Soyinka’s incarceration without trial by the Nigerian government during the Biafran civil war in 1967. \nThe book and the film are both intensely personal. Soyinka found refuge from the brutality inflicted upon him by retreating into himself\, sometimes drifting on the frontiers of madness\, hanging on to his identity by a thread. But he also listened\, watched\, pondered\, and record “his journey of ‘motionlessness'” with scrounged paper and pencil. \nThis gathering is curated by Nathalie Handal\, global citizen\, prize-winning poet\, author of 10 award-winning books\, and Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at NYUAD. It features Wole Soyinka himself – Nobel Prize laureate\, artist-dramatist\, poet\, essayist\, musician\, philosopher\, academic\, teacher\, human rights activist\, global artist\, and scholar; the film’s director Awam Amkpa (USA/Nigeria) who is also a playwright\, actor\, theatre scholar\, curator of visual and performing arts and film festivals around the world\, and NYUAD’s Vice Provost for the Arts\, and Dean of Arts and Humanities; and Wale Ojo\, the Nigerian-British actor who took the lead role in The Man Died. \nThe evening also features the much-awarded US poet\, playwright and essayist Claudia Rankine; John Akomfrah\, the Ghanaian-born British artist\, writer\, film director\, screenwriter\, theorist and curator\, known as “one of the UK’s most pioneering film-makers [whose] poetic works have grappled with race\, identity and post-colonial attitudes for over three decades”; Yolanda Castaño from Spain\, TV presenter\, poet\, essayist\, editor\, literary critic\, painter and poet (winner of the Spanish National Award for Poetry); and Andrea Cote (Colombia)\, writer\, poet and translator (and currently a Professor of Creative Writing for the Bilingual MFA at University of Texas El Paso). \nThere’s music\, too. Anthony Joseph\, British-based Trinidad-born poet\, novelist\, academic and musician is alsways good value – he cites his main influences as calypso\, surrealism\, jazz\, the Baptist church of his grandparents\, and the rhythms of Caribbean speech. Abínibí Groovy Band is a vibrant group led by Abbey Trombone (aka Afowoslide) and given to energetic Afrocentric performances that blend indigenous and contemporary sounds for a fusion of Afrobeat\, Highlife\, and jazz (great sax player\, too). Herve Samb is a visionary Senegalese guitarist\, composer\, and arranger who has performed with an enviable playlist of artists from Jimmy Cliff to Pharoah Sanders\, Meshell Ndegeocello to Oumou Sangare\, Amadou & Mariam to the World Saxophone Quartet … He has pioneered the Jazz Sabar style\, a fusion of jazz and Senegalese rhythms Grammy-nominated drummer and bandleader Otis Brown III has also recorded and toured widely\, with the likes of Herbie Hancock\, Esperanza Spalding\, Terence Blanchard\, Robert Glasper\, and many others; most recently he collaborated with the Alvin Ailey American Dance theater for the premiere of a new work\, Finding Free. Somi (Somi Kakoma) is one of those who has worked with Otis Brown\, as it happens; she’s an American-born vocalist\, composer\, actor and playwright of Rwandan/Ugandan descent; as well as her active recording and performing career she is the founder of Salon Africana\, a boutique cultural agency and record label.
