SUMMARY:Sama Alshaibi: طرس (Tterss)
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of recent body work by one of the gallery’s stars. Alshaibi’s multimedia work explores spaces of conflict and the power struggles that reimagine Baghdad’s transformation – its peaks\, declines\, and latent possibilities. Baghdad becomes a site of physical presence and alternative visions – one that is “always mediated\, annotated\, and glimpsed through shifting thresholds” as Alshaibi puts it. \nAfter 40 years\, Alshaibi returned to her homeland several times between 2021 and 2023. To reorient herself with a city she had once known more through imagination than lived experience\, she constructs an abstracted and interrupted history and reality; the Arabic title evokes the idea of a palimpsest\, a concept Alshaibi explores through the superimposed strata of imagery within her collages that immerse the city’s ruins and infrastructures into a deeper narrative of alienation. LiDAR data mapping is interwoven with photographs and archival materials to create a speculative space for understanding historical Arab cities as microcosms of broader global crises\, where past and present collide \nTo 30 May. \nAbove: Sama Alshaibi\, Duplicates (2024)

SUMMARY:Michael Sailstorfer: Air Electric
DESCRIPTION:Sailstorfer’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery brings together three series of works that explore one of the artist’s signature themes: energy. He reflects on energy as a source\, as storage\, as a transmitter\, as working material – in short\, as fuel for life. \nThe sculptural series C-Batterie plays with notions of classical sculpture such as eternity\, uniqueness and preconceived values. At first glance\, the five bronze casts on white pedestals seem to fulfil these ideas: but is this really the case? Referencing Joseph Beuys’ Capri-Batterie (1985)\, Sailstorfer creates wax models of the original Capri battery\, places them in beehives\, leaves the bees to work on them for a few months\, and then removes the moulds to cast bronzes from them. The results feels as if nature has taken over\, destabilising and questioning the so-called balance while capturing the transience and the creative energy of the moment. \nAnother set of casts made from ordinary lightbulbs\, using the same process\, are suspended from the ceiling with reference to their original function. \nSailstorfer’s latest series – Air Electric\, from which the exhibition takes its title – turns electricity into his painting medium. A power supply unit provides a constant flow of direct current that ‘paints’ silver on to copper mesh; the result is an abstract\, electric landscape of pale blue cloud formations against a golden sky. Occasionally\, certain\nshapes can be made out through the web of clouds\, but the interpretation of the work is ultimately left to\nthe viewer. \nThe final work in the exhibition is an addition to Sailstorfer’s Tank series (2020 on). Tank 11 (2024\, above) consists of an empty Audi fuel tank\, deprived of its original function and context; the tank takes on anthropomorphic features\, reminiscent of oceanic masks from a bygone era. The sound of breathing fills the last part of the room\, reminding us that energy in any given form is always fuel for life. \nTo 23 May.

SUMMARY:Kuniko Kato
DESCRIPTION:Kuniko Kato is one of the world’s leading percussionists\, noted for astonishing virtuosity and flawless technique\, exquisite musical insight and expressive yet elegant performance style; we don’t know what her programme will be\, but she is equally proficient in traditional and contemporary works – she is particularly known for her interpretations of classic 1980s minimalist works by Steve Reich. As one review put it\, “Kuniko is at her best navigating the mathematical terrain of Reich’s score\, coaxing from it the personality of the music: anxious\, busy\, frenetic. Kuniko never ceases to surprise and amaze \,\,.” \nThis Abu Dhabi Festival performance is produced in partnership with the Embassy of Japan. \n

SUMMARY:Maydan: A Living Agora
DESCRIPTION:This clever collaboration fills one of Leila Heller’s gallery spaces with work by artists from Toronto’s Zaal Art Gallery for a short run that coincides with Art Dubai – thus providing curated exposure for rather more work than an Art Dubai booth would allow\, and for a couple of days longer too. \nThe exhibition has a theme\, too – Maydan\, “a space of gathering\, exchange\, and dialogue\, both as a physical site and as a symbolic structure embedded in Middle Eastern\, South Asian\, and global cultures … It embodies evolving notions of collectivism\, identity\, and shared presence”. So Maydan: A Living Agora brings together artists from diverse backgrounds who engage with the social\, spatial\, and conceptual dimensions of communal space with works that reflect the idea of Maydan as a platform for negotiation\, memory\, and storytelling within today’s shifting cultural landscapes … \nIt features works by Shirin Neshat\, Marcos Grigorian\, Katya Traboulsi\, Zeinab Al Hashemi\, Arash Nazari\, Lorenzo Quinn\, Aref Montazeri\, Anton Bakker\, Sofia Yeganeh\, Katya Emelyanova\, Azza Al Qubaisi\, Jehangir Vazifdar\, Marwan Sahmarani\, Y.Z Kami\, Wassef Boutros Ghali\, Soraya Sharghi\, Reza Aramesh\, Parinaz Eleish Gharagozlou\, Mehdi Farhadian\, Farideh Lashai\, and Behrang Samadzadegan. \nTo 20 April. \nAbove: Mehdi Farhadian\, Allies (2023)

SUMMARY:Reynier Llanes: Reverie
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition inspired by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s comment on ‘reverie’ – “Reverie is not a mind vacuum. It is rather the gift of an hour which knows the plenitude of the soul”\, a space where imagination and memory intertwine to reveal profound truths about the self and the world. The Cuban painter embodies that vision in this exhibition\, curated by Celine Azem; “his canvases invite viewers into a dreamlike space where personal and collective histories merge … His work does not retreat from life’s struggles but reinterprets them\, transforming them into compositions where emotions\, memories\, and aspirations coexist in harmony”. \nTe exhibition introduces the latest works from Llanes’ The Poet series\, bridging ancestral echoes with contemporary realities; The Poet is an ethereal\, enigmatic figure drifting between memory and imagination\, past and present\, to become a vessel for the viewer’s own reflections. “The Poet is both wanderer and witness\, a keeper of memory embodying the ever-shifting human condition.” \nTo 14 June. \nAbove: Reynier Llanes\, Eve (2025)

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bashir Makhoul: The Promise
DESCRIPTION:New works by the noted Palestinian artist. The title The Promise suggests a poetic and ambiguous statement of intent; a promise is made but can also be broken. SUMMARY:Hazem Harb: Not There\, Yet Felt
DESCRIPTION:Unlike earlier works that centred around collective narratives\, this new body of work from Hazem Harb is highly personal and intimate; it aims to draw the viewer into Harb’s own lived environment\, reflecting his sense of disembodiment\, a feeling of being simultaneously connected to and distanced from his home. ‘Peeling’ is a central metaphor to reveal layered memories and histories embedded within the walls of Harb’s Gaza home; through evocative collage\, neon installation\, and a poignant self-portrait\, the artist raises themes of displacement\, memory\, and our emotional and physical connections to home. \nTo 27 May.

SUMMARY:Aseel AlYaqoub: three films
DESCRIPTION:A screening of three films by Aseel AlYaqoub\, currently featuring in the NYUAD Art Gallery’s important Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial exhibition (due to close on 20 April and well work seeing – again\, if you’ve already been). \nThrough archival excavation and performative reenactment\, AlYaqoub explores the entanglements of militarism\, memory\, and inherited state rituals in postcolonial Kuwait. Drawing from found footage\, oral accounts\, and domestic gestures\, the selected films – When The Lyrebird Calls (2022)\, A Hundred Soldiers Somersaulting (2020)\, and Semiotics of War in the Kitchen (2017)  – trace the evolving iconography of war and resistance\, from colonial influence to familial memory. Together\, they question the reliability of inherited symbols and the quiet absurdities embedded in national myth-making. \nThe screening will be followed by a moderated discussion with the artist.

SUMMARY:Hadieh Shafie: Resonant Turns
DESCRIPTION:Hadieh Shafie uses ink\, paint and paper as material for works that abstract text into form\, evoking different optical perspectives; her reliefs comprise circular or cone-shaped scrolls inscribed with Farsi poetry and her own writing in acts of concealment\, fragmentation and distortion. Her visual language\, a form of mark-making\, is multi-layered and arises from a profound understanding of words as an energetic charge\, colour as emotion\, and repetition as a kind of spiritual practice.
