SUMMARY:PowerPointless
DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. \nThe presenters: Rami Boraie (reigning champion); Ahmed Al Achrafi (“the Sultan of Spontaneity and Maestro of Multilingual Motivation”); Kyle Herselman (who’s spent his entire – albeit brief – working life in theatre and improvisation); Lucy Kitson (actress\, storyteller\, comedian\, self-proclaimed expert in the fine art of pretending to have it all together); and Alana Hicks (acting teacher who aims to prove that teaching and acting aren’t so different). There’s a Special Guest Presenter too – Nicholas Ashkar\, head of the education division at Publicis Groupe. \nIt’s free\, with donations welcome; but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website: it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat). \n

SUMMARY:CC: cARTpets
DESCRIPTION:Outsider artist CC\, better known to his mum as Alireza Asbahi\, shows his latest collection of carpets and hangings. It’s quirky\, interesting art that collages and layers materials and shapes. His works have the same kind of raw energy that is more commonly found these days in urban art; the subject matter though reflects Iranian history and culture\, particularly the traditional iconography like the Lion and the Sun. To 23 April.

SUMMARY:From Kalīla wa Dimna to La Fontaine: Travelling through Fables
DESCRIPTION:A showcase for the power of fables from different cultures and eras\, providing “the opportunity to explore the universal themes and lessons found in these stories and understand the significance they hold in shaping our world”. It’s divided into three main sections – Travelling Tales\, Telling Stories\, and The Fables Today – with more than 132 artworks on display\, an eclectic collection of rare manuscripts\, paintings\, contemporary works\, and more pieces from France\, Saudi Arabia\, and the Emirates. \nCurated by Annie Vernay-Nouri\, Former Chief Curator\, Oriental Manuscripts Department\, Bibliothèque nationale de France\, the exhibition is held in partnership with Bibliothèque nationale de France and France Muséums and is supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. \nThe exhibition traces the origins of the genre in India and Greece\, following its evolution through the contributions of two key figures: Aesop in the Greco-Roman world and Ibn al-Muqaffa in the Arab-Islamic world. Says curator Annie Vernay-Nouri: “For the first time\, visitors have a unique opportunity to witness and compare rare and precious artworks representing three distinct traditions of fables. The Eastern and Western traditions\, rooted in a shared universal heritage\, have evolved independently without direct contact\, each charting its own course. It is only through the works of the eminent fabulist Jean de La Fontaine that these traditions have finally converged and united in a singular collection showcased at Louvre Abu Dhabi.” \nNotable loans from Louvre Abu Dhabi’s partners include one of the oldest illustrated manuscripts of Ibn al-Muqaffa’s Kalīla wa Dimna from the Ayyubid dynasty (1171-1250 CE); ‘The Two Adventurers and the Wondrous Writ’ illustrated by the noted French Rococo painter\, tapestry designer\, and illustrator Jean-Baptiste Oudry with engraving by Bonaventure Louis Prévost; an engraving of Emile Bayard’s nineteenth century Portrait of Jean de La Fontaine; and La Fontaine composant ses fables by François Vayron\, engraver. \nFor the first time Louvre Abu Dhabi is utilising artificial intelligence within the mediation devices for this exhibition\, allowing visitors to create their own fable by selecting characters and a moral\, which they can download by scanning a QR code. Visitors can customise their fables. There’s also an accompanying range of cultural and educational programmes; and as a final killer point\, admission to the museum is free for children under the age of 18 … \nTo 21 July. \nAbove: Ibn al-Muqaffa‘ (c.720-756)\, Kalīla wa Dimna. SUMMARY:Oriental and Orientalist: Two Worlds Apart
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Saleh Barakat\, a Beirut-based gallerist (he founded Agial Art Gallery and then Saleh Barakat Gallery) who specialises in modern and contemporary art from the Arab world. His talk considers the way Western artists have portrayed the Middle East as contrasted with the vernacular perspectives of modern Arab artists. “Explore the nuanced similarities and stark differences that define and separate these artistic visions” say the organisers\, for whom this will be the first of a series of art history lectures.

SUMMARY:Les Monologues du V.
DESCRIPTION:The Vagina Monologues may have had the title toned down for wider public consumption – the original was hardly likely to get past the censors\, even in this French-language version – but it still packs a powerful piece of feminist theatre. The dramatist Eve Ensler based her test on more than 200 interviews with women who confided their sensations\, their traumas\, their aspirations\, their anxieties\, their joys … As the publicity for this Francophone presentation puts it: “plus qu’une pièce de théâtre\, c’est un véritable phénomène de société”. It’s delivered by Solena Banks\, Marie-Alice Drissi and Chrystele Rossignol and directed by Culture Emulsion’s main man Stéphane Brismontier. \n

After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Continuing its policy of attracting established blue-chip touring performances\, Dubai Opera is running Broadway Entertainment Group’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical for a three-week run. \nThe story is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of a musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. SUMMARY:Shawn Chidiac: Wonderful Amazing Exciting WAEW
DESCRIPTION:UAE-based Shawn Chidiac – known as myparents_are_divorced on Instagram – is great at character skits\, thanks in part to his excellent imitations of just about any accent from the region. The results have apparently offended some people\, but don’t come to comedy gigs if you’re oversensitive … Anyhow\, we’re promised “an evening of side-splitting humour\, heartfelt anecdotes\, and uproarious performances”\, which is just as well given the ticket prices. SUMMARY:Ola Maciejewska: Bombyx Mori
DESCRIPTION:In this 55-minute this work for three dancers\, choreographer Ola Maciejewska draws inspiration from the innovative early 20th century work of modern dance pioneer Loïe Fuller. Bombyx Mori explores movement as a result of the interactions between the body and other things (lights\, materials\, sound)\, as opposed to movement from within the body. The title Bombyx Mori refers to the silkworm\, which has become entirely dependent on humans for its survival; dance\, archives and artifice are interwoven in this performance\, providing a metaphor for the hybrid nature of things. \nWith the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels\, Maciejewska is currently working on a larger body of work focused on convergences between dance and visual art and transmission. \n
