SUMMARY:Gallant Indies | Les Indes galantes: dir Philippe Béziat (2021)
DESCRIPTION:On the stage of the Opéra Bastille in Paris\, 30 dancers from non-traditional genres – hip-hop\, krump\, break\, voguing – reprise and remix Jean-Philippe Rameau’s baroque 1735 masterpiece\, Les Indes galantes. It’s an opera offensive to modern sensibilities that reflected French colonial expansion and represented the myth of the noble savage; this documentary follows the cast over the course of a year as they take the idea from concept to stage\, culminating in a performance run at the Opéra Bastille. The modern mix of urban dance and opera singing represents both a human adventure and a meeting of political realities: so can a new generation of artists storm the Bastille today? Screens in the MOVE ON FILM season.

SUMMARY:The Woman in Black
DESCRIPTION:Susan Hill’s elegantly eerie ghost story has been seen by more than seven million people in the stage adaptation by Stephen Mallatratt\, and very few will have been disappointed (or unshaken). A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough\, but as they reach further into his darkest memories\, the borders between make-believe and reality begin to blur as the Woman in Black reveals her terrible purpose … \nThe Daily Telegraph called it “the most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter”; the Guardian went with “one of British theatre’s biggest – and scariest – hits”. This award-winning production sold out its previous runs in the UAE; directed by John Payton who also boasts the credit for Music and Sound Design\, it is produced by Lucy Magee of West End Worldwide\, the company behind more than 50 of the UAE’s most successful touring productions. \nThere are further performances on 31 October and 1 and 2 November.

SUMMARY:Vian Sora: House of Pearls
DESCRIPTION:New paintings and works on paper from the Louisville-based artist that explore pearls as “a metaphor for achieving stability and the needed structural integrity for life itself to regenerate”. Drawing on her experiences as a war survivor and immigrant (Iraqi-born\, she sought refuge in Dubai following the US invasion of Iraq) Sora reflects on the uncertainty and shifting boundaries of existence\, capturing the physical\, mental\, and emotional toll experienced across nations\, cultures\, and time. “Her paintings reveal the complex nature of identity and seek cohesion like the iridescent layers of a natural pearl” says the gallery. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Randa Maddah: Hanging Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural solo exhibition of the Syrian visual artist whose practice spans painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, video\, and installation. In this recent work\, Maddah repurposes the vocabulary of traditional miniature paintings to depict “dream-like scenes that negotiate themes of belonging\, resilience\, rootedness\, rebirth\, and renewal through natural elements … The work embodies the notion of a spirit shaped by harsh and absurd realities\, exploring themes of ecstasy\, liberation\, and reincarnation … Reflecting on transcendence and rebirth\, Maddah suggests that the body is merely a garment the soul sheds to wear anew\, offering hope that death is simply a gateway to a new life”.

DESCRIPTION:A captivating dance documentary that celebrates the life and work of the world-renowned choreographer Pina Bausch. During the preparations for the film in 2009\, Bausch died suddenly; the dancers of Bausch’s company\, Tanztheater Wuppertal\, convinced him to proceed as a way of memorializing Bausch and her choreography. The film has four major stage performances actually rehearsed by Bausch\, interspersed with solo and duet dances from many of Bausch’s other works; many of the dancers relate their stories of working with Pina. As a result\, Pina is a tribute to an extraordinary artist who redefined the boundaries of modern dance. The screening\, in the MOVE ON FILM season\, is followed by a talk and Q&A with Jean Laurent Sasportes (a principal dancer with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch from 1979 to 1997 who has continued to be involved with the Pina Bausch repertoire).

SUMMARY:Max Richter: The Four Seasons Recomposed
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to the classical repertoire\, you don’t get much more mainstream than Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. It seems dangerous\, even perhaps sacrilegious\, to tinker with this much loved\, immensely popular music. But because it has been played so often and by so many virtuosi\, maybe there’s now nothing new to say with the piece. So Max Richter\, the contemporary classical composer of music for stage\, opera\, ballet\, screen and concert hall\, decided to rework it from the ground up. \nHis innovative take on Vivaldi’s classic\, first heard in 2012\, retains the emotional depth of the original while introducing a contemporary soundscape – Richter has said that he had discarded 75 percent of Vivaldi’s original material\, but the parts he does use are phased and looped to provide a dynamic\, modern twist. The result is a true orchestral work\, albeit with some respectably subtle electronic treatments here and there. Reviews of performances and recordings have ranged from the incurably bewildered and damning to grudging respect and outright enthusiasm\, so it will be at the least interesting to see how Vivaldi can be introduced to the 21st century … \nIt’s performed at Dubai Opera by the Kyiv Virtuosi chamber orchestra\, led by conductor Dmitry Yablonsky\, with the much-feted Ukrainian violinist Anastasiya Petryshak.

DESCRIPTION:The last in a series of exhibitions investigating contemporary approaches to fibre art curated by Murtaza Vali\, this group show builds on notions of nurture and care long associated with cloth – which envelopes our bodies from our first breath to our last. SUMMARY:Three Tired Tigers
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together more than 40 artists and collectives\, drawing from politics\, history\, economics and urbanism\, this exhibition takes a playful yet serious approach to how animals navigate and thrive within the gaps of urban environments. What happens when animals escape their enclosures or conflict with humans\, shifting from admired symbol to nuisance\, from pet to pest? Visitors are challenged to rethink coexistence\, ecology and the importance of recognising animals as part of our everyday geographies. \nFeaturing works by artists engaging with urban animals across different regions – from Dubai’s many street cats to stories of displaced dogs\, disappearing lions and bears living atop mountains – the exhibition invites us to view our cities and landscapes from a (mostly) four-legged perspective. DESCRIPTION:Through her work\, Gargash delves into spirituality\, transformation\, and the human journey. Her first solo exhibition with the Maraya Art Centre has a title – kun means ‘to be’ – that reflects the exploration of a liminal state between different phases of being\, where transitions occur from one state of mind to another; Gargash aims to create an intervention that evokes a sense of journey\, path\, and guidance and fosters a deep understanding of connectivity. This intervention will be a long gold fabric integrated into the various spaces curated by the compass and its direction; the gold fabric will drape and cover any element crossing its path\, concealing them. \nKun is curated by Cima Azzam. \nTo 10 January.

SUMMARY:Reminiscencia
DESCRIPTION:Confined to his home during the Covid lockdown of 2020\, artist Malicho Vaca Valenzuela sat down in front of his computer and began collecting memories from the residents of Santiago. His goal was to tell the story of his neighbourhood\, a vibrant area in the heart of the Chilean capital; his social media request for testimonies and personal memories about public spaces received numerous responses\, and at the same time his grandparents started to share their own memories with him\, their stories intertwining with the others. In this country “where there are immense blue skies in which one can read but where one doesn’t know what is hidden in the ground\,” the director digs into the earth: a simple click on a digital map and he uncovers mysterious loves and repressed revolutions\, so many fragments of an intimate and collective memory. Audience members are invited to quit chasing time and listen to the voices within them\, to cling to what may still remain of a memory. \nReminiscencia is part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Andy Warhol\, The Glam Factory
