SUMMARY:Colorful Threads: The Interwoven Worlds of Art and Culture in the Western Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:The third symposium in the Africa Institute’s four-part Colorful Threads season – co-organized by Prita Meier\, Associate Professor of Art History at NYU\, and Laura Fair\, Professor of African History at Columbia University – considers the momentous cultural interactions and microeconomies of exchange among the Eastern African coastline and the islands of the western Indian Ocean; we have come to understand that these places were also important sites for creativity and imagination. \nFrom the rich artistic traditions of music\, photography\, theatre\, dance\, ritual life\, and spirit possession performances (to mention only a few examples)\, this symposium aims to decipher the fine print of an intricately interwoven oceanic tapestry. The focus on aesthetic sensibilities and cultural logic will necessarily engage questions of power\, representation\, production\, consumption\, and “the systems of signification emerging from a panoply of cultural forms and consciousnesses”. \nThis forum will bring scholars from various academic disciplines and geographical locations to ponder both symbolic and cultural capital. The full programme is here. \nIt’s free and open to the public (pre-registration is required). It will also be livestreamed. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Boeing-Boeing
DESCRIPTION:Marc Camoletti’s farce had a short run in November at the Junction\, but now it’s back by popular demand\, as they say\, and for two nights only. \nThe play has a delicious 60s vibe: swinging bachelor Bernard is simultaneously engaged to Gloria\, Gabriella\, and Gretchen\, all flight attendants who don’t know of each other’s existence. But then things get complicated; his friend Robert  comes to stay\, there’s a recalcitrant housekeeper who has to keep changing the photographs of the fiancées\, and complications such as weather and a new\, speedier Boeing jet disrupt his careful planning such that all three air hostesses (no one called them ‘cabin crew’ in the 60s) are unexpectedly in Paris – and indeed in Bernard’s flat – at the same time … Cue confusion\, confessions\, chaos\, and near escapes. \nIt’s a terrific update on the traditional fin de siècle French farce\, redolent of its times\, and it has the sort of cosmopolitan cast that speaks of Dubai: Asad Raza Khan plays Bernard\, Dee Gee is Robert\, the maid Bertha is Sumaya Kubeisy\, and the girls are Priyanka Johri\, Gabriela Ioana and Vicky Clips. \nThe second performance is at the same time on 17 December. \n

SUMMARY:Saadiyat Nights: Mariah Carey
DESCRIPTION:This new open-air musical event series (in a purpose-built venue that will “boast a stunning backdrop of Saadiyat Island vistas” – though otherwise we’re not sure exactly where it is) kicks off with a concert from the best-selling American singer. Her famous five-octave vocal range is undimmed by time – she’s in her mid 50s now – and she continues to influence vocal styles like merging hip-hop with pop. Could be a good night. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tammam Azzam: Diary
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition that showcases works which play with perspective – “horizon lines expand outward and urban vistas are cut into parts\, interrupted like the lines of a window frame”. Architecture becomes a subjective reality\, painted paper collages symbolise the delicate balance between fragility and creation; “each fragment in his work (of colour\, material\, form) is a piece of time\, a rhythm. And the entire picture is more than the sum of its parts …” \nTo 20 February. \nAbove: Tammam Azzam\, Untitled (2023) \n

SUMMARY:The Jazz of the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Now this looks like a fine way to start the new year: Stephon Alexander\, Professor of Physics at Brown University\, talks about the intriguing connections between the realms of physics\, cosmology\, and quantum physics with the music that defines an era. He examines the narrative of cosmic structure\, interpreting it through the elements of jazz music\, and unveiles the harmonious relationship between what are diverse yet unified fields.

SUMMARY:Revoir Paris: dir Alice Wincoer (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Wincoer’s gently searing drama is loosely based on the Bataclan concert hall attack in Paris in 2015 (her brother was a survivor). Virginie Efira is excellent as Mia\, a woman struggling with the trauma of having survived a brutal assault on a restaurant in the centre of town that left behind dozens of victims; as the title implies\, the film is about memory – remembering Paris as it was\, remembering life as it was. The acting is good\, the photography a paeon to the city. Recommended. \nIn French with English subtitles. It shows again on 23 January. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Green Art Gallery x Selma Feriani Gallery
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition in collaboration with Selma Feriani Gallery\, featuring work by the Tunis gallery’s artists: Nazgol Ansarinia\, Rossella Biscotti\, M’barek Bouhchichi\, Hera Büyüktaşcıyan\, Elena Damiani\, Yazid Oulab and Massinissa Selmani. \nThis could be a very interesting show. Established in 2013 and representing emerging and mid-career artists mainly from the MENA region\, Selma Feriani Gallery (and Ms Feriani herself) has established a good reputation for finding and fostering young artists; it has run critically and publicly successful exhibitions in its own space and elsewhere\, installed public interventions and exhibitions internationally\, and participated at the 2015 and 2017 Venice Biennales. \nTo 17 February. \nAbove: Elena Damiani\, Ventifacts 6 (2022) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Anthropocene – The Human Epoch: dir Jennifer Baichwal\, Nicholas de Pencier\, Edward Burtynsky (2018)
DESCRIPTION:A cinematic meditation on humanity’s massive reengineering of the planet\, this epic Canadian documentary by the multiple-award winning team of Baichwal\, de Pencier and Burtynsky was four years in the making; it follows the research of an international body of scientists\, the Anthropocene Working Group who argue that profound and lasting human changes to the Earth meant that the Holocene Epoch gave way to the Anthropocene Epoch in the mid-twentieth century. \nFrom concrete seawalls in China that now cover 60 percent of the mainland coast to the biggest terrestrial machines ever built in Germany\, from psychedelic potash mines in Russia’s Ural Mountains\, to metal festivals in the closed city of Norilsk\, from the devastated Great Barrier Reef to surreal lithium evaporation ponds in the Atacama Desert\, the filmmakers have traversed the globe using high-end production values and state of the art camera techniques to document evidence and experience of human planetary domination. \nIt’s a spectacular and disturbing watch that kicks off a new film series featuring a selection of predominantly independent films which aim to explore social and cultural topics relevant to the UAE. Under the umbrella name NAAS\, the programme is a collaboration between a number of local institutions – the Canadian and French embassies\, the Goethe-Institut\, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi – in partnership with Manarat al Saadiyat. \nIts opening edition has the theme Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future and focuses on the environment and sustainability “in entertaining and exciting ways”; there will be films regularly ever other week over the next six months. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pouran Jinchi: Fly Like Dandelions
DESCRIPTION:Pouran Jinchi was inspired to embark on this new body of work after reading an article about a Guatemalan farmer forced to flee due to the impact of climate change on agriculture; her inspiration for this series stems from landscapes affected by climate change\, such as ghost forests and arid lands. \nIn her paintings she merges traditional calligraphy techniques with abstraction\, using written characters to delve into the complexities of perception\, reality\, and meaning. The core motif is a repeated Persian character for ‘trees’\, used to depictions of trees and tree trunks in a way that allows legibility to gradually morph into an artistic form. The inclusion of dots\, a fundamental starting point in Islamic calligraphy\, contributes to the portrayal of an arid landscape\, symbolising the lingering memories of a life that once was. The dandelion seed pod\, transformed into a calligraphic symbol\, drifts across these landscapes in Jinchi’s paintings – a powerful representation of the resilient migrants who\, much like dandelion seeds\, find themselves displaced yet determined to navigate a new path. \nTo 16 February. \nAbove: Pouran Jinchi\, Fly Like Dandelions 9 (2023) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kamran Samimi: Before Nature (I Am Both Created and Destroyed)
DESCRIPTION:Kamran Samimi’s first exhibition with The Third Line draws inspiration from the land’s rich tapestry of natural materials. Delving into the concealed narratives of the UAE’s mountainous terrain\, Samimi’s practice is deeply rooted in a profound sense of place. As he explores the dynamics between human and non-human ancestors\, his multicultural identity (Iranian/Norwegian\, raised in rural Hawai’i) lends a distinctive perspective to unravelling these connections and conflicts. \nSamimi has harnessed the organic shapes of the UAE’s mountains and rocks for his Translations series. Alongside the paintings is a large stone sculpture titled Unbroken Column to be displayed outdoors in Alserkal Avenue. \nTo 16 February. \nAbove: Kamran Samimi\, Meditation on Rain III (2023) \n

SUMMARY:Being Borrowed: On Egyptian Migration to the Gulf
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring 21 Egyptian artists and curated by Farah Hallaba\, Farida Youssef\, and Ali Zaaray. It’s the result of an collaboration that was first presented in Cairo in 2022 and brings the authors of this project together with research by NYUAD faculty Laure Assaf on second-generation Arab migrants in Abu Dhabi. \nBeing Borrowed is part of a larger aim to produce accessible knowledge that invites people to question and to feel. Migration and its effects – on families\, affects\, homes – is a widely shared experience; there is much to gain by opening the doors of knowledge production beyond academia\, and inviting the public to take part in this process. \nThis project is funded by the NYUAD Arts and Humanities Research Kitchen Al Mashhad initiative. To 7 February.

SUMMARY:The Fridge Open Mic Night
DESCRIPTION:Ten-minute performance slots at The Fridge’s well-equipped Alserkal Avenue warehouse venue. It’s first-come first-served\, but we’d expect some judicious balancing (if you’re up for it\, here’s the online registration form); the gig starts at 7pm\, so by our reckoning that’s at least 18-20 performers. The form invites bands\, solo signers\, spoken word artists and generic ‘performers’ to put themselves forward … We think it’s free to both performers and consumers. \n

SUMMARY:Khatia Buniatishvili
DESCRIPTION:An evening with one of the contemporary stars of the piano. Garlanded with accolades yet still only in her mid 30s\, Khatia Buniatishvili brings passion and vulnerability to her performances; she acknowledges that the folk music of native Georgia has greatly influenced her musicality\, and that is probably reflected in her warm\, sometimes sorrowful playing. “The piano is the blackest instrument\,” she says\, a “symbol of musical solitude”\, which even a pianist must become accustomed to. “I have to be psychologically strong and forget the hall if I want to share it with the audience.” \nHer recital should bring out the best in her\, from the melancholy lyricism of the Satie to a virtuoso climax in the energetic toe-tapping rhythms of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No.2. \nThis is a rare and highly recommended opportunity. And she’ll be playing the Dubai Opera Edition by Steinway & Sons\, one of the piano maker’s exclusive productions for specific international concert halls. The Dubai version for instance gets Arabesque patterning on the inner lid\, a music desk that echoes the traditional shape of dhows\, and legs and prop stick that draw inspiration “from the whirling sand dunes of Dubai” (not entirely sure where you’ll find those). \nProgramme: \n\n\n\nSatie Gymnopédie No.1\nChopin Prelude in E Minor op. 28 no. 4\nChopin Scherzo No.3 in C-sharp Minor\nBach ‘Air on the G String’ from Orchestral Suite No.3 in D Major (transcr. SUMMARY:Unveiling the Shadows of the Past: J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije – the hidden icon of photography in Africa
DESCRIPTION:The first gallery show to be dedicated to the work of the noted Ghanaian photographer’s seminal works\, telling the story of Ghanaian modern history through the lens of a local and one which captures the nation in the throes of British colonial rule yet on the cusp of independence. As the gallery note says\, “The power behind Bruce-Vanderpuije’s images lies in the pride and determination of each sitter captured during a period in which two worlds merge into one: Ghanaian traditional heritage and western style modernity”. \nCurated by Ethiopian photographer Aida Muluneh\, the show will have more than two dozen previously unseen black-and-white images by Bruce-Vanderpuije\, depicting life in Ghana in the 1920s and 30s and offering insight into the formation of an independent\, 20th-century Ghanaian social and political identity. \nTo 20 February. \nThe opening evening (12 January\, 6.30-8pm) features a discussion between curator Aïda Muluneh and J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije’s granddaughter Kate Tamakloe covering the photograph’s career and the importance of archiving and photography on the African continent from the 1920s to the present day. \nAbove: J.K. SUMMARY:Ahmad Kasha: A Moment of Peace
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the young Syrian painter. “Those who follow Kasha’s experience will notice his transition from expressive realism shortly after his graduation from the College of Fine Arts to expressionism\, which tends toward abstraction in a fluid experimentation that attempts to get rid of the customs and traditions that constitute the painting composed by the Syrian professional in general. Colours ignite and fade\, get dirty and wash away\, falling here and there unintentionally or intentionally\, left to say what they say. Behold the voice of this experience muttering in our eyes and lips of this young soul of animals of blood and fire …” \nTo 17 February. \nAbove: Ahmad Kasha\, Untitled (2023) \n
