The investigators find there a primitive agrarian society led by the young Queen Amara\, absolute ruler of a feudal society and the figurehead of the Earth Mother religion. Will she and her people be prepared to share the only planet they’ve known\, with the people who once abandoned it? \nNoha Shahwan’s Prologue Productions is responsible. An independent UAE-based production company founded just last year but calling on many years of experience in theatre\, films\, TV and music\, Prologue did the entertaining Will You Marry (With) Me at the Junction this summer\, and was also active in Short + Sweet 2023. Prologue says Rusted Stars will be the first original musical play to be produced in the UAE. \nThe idea and production is by Rohan K Jain; Tariq Abouzeid directs; the score is by Caio Kehyayan\, book by Terry Newman\, lyrics by Newman and Ty Christian. \nThere are further performances at 8pm on 9 December and at 2.30 and 8pm on 10 December. \n  \n

The teams issue challenges to each other on the seasonal theme\, and the judges are looking for how well the improvisors react (usually in terms of narrative\, technique\, and entertainment – judges can hand out warnings or penalties for being boring). One team will get through to win the coveted Theatresports trophy … It’s great fun\, and it’s free. DESCRIPTION:The Astana Opera Orchestra\, the Dubai Festival Chorus\, and conductor Rob Johnston perform the classic mainstay of the festive season – one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral pieces in Western music. Famously Handel composed Messiah in just 24 days without much sleep or food; and while writing the great ‘Hallelujah’ chorus Handel’s servant discovered him with tears in his eyes and he exclaimed\, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me\, and the great God Himself seated on His throne\, with His company of Angels”. Powerful stuff. \nThe Orchestra of the Asrtana State Opera and Ballet has more than 120 musicians\, many of them required for this full-bodied piece. Rob Johnston\, a noted tenor as well as conductor\, has led the Dubai Festival Chorus since 2019; the Chorus is a talented group of singers drawn from across the UAE\, originally brought together for the Dubai debut of the BBC Proms and now numbering over 200 members of 25 different nationalities. \n

DESCRIPTION:The third symposium in the Africa Institute’s four-part Colorful Threads season – co-organized by Prita Meier\, Associate Professor of Art History at NYU\, and Laura Fair\, Professor of African History at Columbia University – considers the momentous cultural interactions and microeconomies of exchange among the Eastern African coastline and the islands of the western Indian Ocean; we have come to understand that these places were also important sites for creativity and imagination. \nFrom the rich artistic traditions of music\, photography\, theatre\, dance\, ritual life\, and spirit possession performances (to mention only a few examples)\, this symposium aims to decipher the fine print of an intricately interwoven oceanic tapestry. The focus on aesthetic sensibilities and cultural logic will necessarily engage questions of power\, representation\, production\, consumption\, and “the systems of signification emerging from a panoply of cultural forms and consciousnesses”. \nThis forum will bring scholars from various academic disciplines and geographical locations to ponder both symbolic and cultural capital. DESCRIPTION:Marc Camoletti’s farce had a short run in November at the Junction\, but now it’s back by popular demand\, as they say\, and for two nights only. \nThe play has a delicious 60s vibe: swinging bachelor Bernard is simultaneously engaged to Gloria\, Gabriella\, and Gretchen\, all flight attendants who don’t know of each other’s existence. But then things get complicated; his friend Robert  comes to stay\, there’s a recalcitrant housekeeper who has to keep changing the photographs of the fiancées\, and complications such as weather and a new\, speedier Boeing jet disrupt his careful planning such that all three air hostesses (no one called them ‘cabin crew’ in the 60s) are unexpectedly in Paris – and indeed in Bernard’s flat – at the same time … Cue confusion\, confessions\, chaos\, and near escapes. \nIt’s a terrific update on the traditional fin de siècle French farce\, redolent of its times\, and it has the sort of cosmopolitan cast that speaks of Dubai: Asad Raza Khan plays Bernard\, Dee Gee is Robert\, the maid Bertha is Sumaya Kubeisy\, and the girls are Priyanka Johri\, Gabriela Ioana and Vicky Clips. \nThe second performance is at the same time on 17 December. \n
